Are boy/girl scouts organizations inherently conservative/reactionary? In these organizations there is an emphasis on athletics, nature-loving & nostalgic songs.

One thinks immediately of the Hitler Jugend when talking about boy/girl scouts & Hitler was a conservative/reactionary.

Under Hitler the Hitler Jugend were incorporated particularly during large rallies to show up to these rallies en masse.

The Scouting association, in the UK at least, was there first and foremost to prepare lads to die for the empire and, more latterly, NATO. Not sure that it knows what to do with itself now.

My son is an Eagle. That is a major achievement in the US.

But I am friends with a Sligo man with 4 sons and all four are Eagles.
I am guessing there is only a handful who have 4 sons who are Eagles in the whole country

How does one sign their child up for scouts? At what age is a child allowed to become a scout?

If my memory serves me right, he became a cub scout at 4 or 5.
and you are done at 18
