I have returned after 10 days which took me from Newport Oregon on the Pacific to the other side of the country. It was a trip that I long wished to do. I will need to rest some and I am back doing tours on Saturday and they will continue til November 1st or so.

But I have plenty of videos etc etc and will be posting them here

that's a lovely scene --its something my son did last year and he was changed by what he saw --he drove from Milwaukee to LA and then across the desert to Nashville and then to New York .
I have it on my list and my wife will retire next Sept and we hope to rent a suitable vehicle -- please tell us about yours --can you sleep aboard -have you any worries about overnights .
what did it cost had you to return it to where you rented it .

It was September when in Hill City SD and ND and it was just as cold as here but, drier.

There had been a lot of rain before the Labour day PowWow and they had to move it indoors to a big hall. The outdoor arena was too wet.

Had the sister with me in the west. I though seeing the PowWow and all the Regalia and dancing and presenting prizes to tribal members for community service was one of the most exciting moments of my life. Met a Native called Cummins, Sister did not share my enthusiasm.

I am strange that way, I just though being there and being welcomed by the tribal announcers was very exciting. I think I am the only Irish person to enjoy this calibration of culture and the drum beat song they sing. I could have stayed there for a long time. I will search and try to post s video. The local whites do not like them. But I did. I essentially followed the Luis and Clarke trail.

I thought the natives were all gone, driven out. When I saw the Grand Entry I could not believe it. We were asked to stand for the Flag song which is their anthem. I stood the tallest. I found myself gelling with the whole seen. I shed a few wee tears of Joy. Silly maybe, but that is how I felt. I told some of them I was sorry for Irish involvement in the abuse.

Ok.
A bit of background. My so n wished to buy a conversion van. These come from n all sort of assortments and conditions. Some are factory made and the same and others are just customized to the owners desires. The new Mercedes sprinter types can run close to 300000 dollars but he wanted a thing that can handle real rough terrain. What he wanted really was a monster jeep, raised up and big tires.
sure enough he found one for sale in Oregon about 5 months ago. It was a ford 350 commercial van that was customised. It was raised and made into a 4 wheel drive and all sorts of solar panels and a roof that would be raised hydraulically for a sleep ing area. Fridge, stove, microwave , outside shower etc etc . 8 cylinder 6 litre engine with turbo. Listed at 83k dollars.
I told him firget about it as it would not sell. He says d it would. After a few weeks it disappearred.
A few weeks later it was back at 65k and he was eager, i advised not.
But then I am thinking, what if it sells, he will be pissed. So I said, offer 58500. And they accepted.

normally I would be bullshit for offering too much but it is almost 25 less than what he would have done if i was not advising, so it is what it is.

ideally I would have liked to do this trip in November but it can get frigid in the Rockies.

so that was the reason for the trip. We flew to Portland last Monday two weeks and we rented a Kia Mona or something like that, a very small suv, but it was fine. We headed down about a 100 miles to a place called Corvallas and we got a room there in a decent hotel. There would be no Four Seasons in a place like that but we got a decent hotel. Rooms are 100 to 200 a night so we got the 200 one.

i would rough it of course but not my son. Kids today, are programmed. He said to me, he is on vacation, hotel or restaurant, same thing. He will open his phone and press on “top rated” . Maybe they are right.
None of my kids will go to a restaurant that is not top rated .

so Monday we have landed and he meets the lady and drives the van. It is complicated with a high and low and a two and a four. And all sorts of hydraulics and lights etc

Looks like a good deal for a vehicle like that, and could be fun travelling around in it alright.

Do they seriously always check out top rated restaurants? Now that could be an expensive habit!

Yes, it is automatic. The will google hotel near me, or restaurant near me, and tap on the best rated filter. In a large city it might be different as the best would be booked out(hopefully)

I have been busy but many are asking for video of my trip so I will oblige. We landed on nMonday aug 12 so we looked at the vehicle and got a hotel etc that day. Next day we drove to the top of Marys Peak. It is the highest of the coastal mountains at 4101 feet above sea level.

Needless to say accurate information only comes from an auld Irish farmer with cows. Mary's Peak is in Oregon North West USA.

There is no doubt US has a lovely countryside. Pity about the horrible Yankee accent. How did they manage to develop such a twang? Hope to go back again. Already drove 4000 miles there and caught one trout. Declan does not like native Indians but I do and always visit them. The The The Walla Walla valley was stolen from the Nez Pierce natives in Washington state.
Go to the Black Hills and Custer State park and photo the Buffallo and post here.

Loads of returned yanks coming back here loaded with money and buying land.

Of course the yanks put the white lines on the edge of the road and the orange lines in the centre.
