You know, I always thought PJ harvey was overrated. A big part of her deal is that she was sexy. Musically I found her to be a fairly mid-musician; an average songwriter, average vocalist, and a very ordinary guitarist. But I do love this track.

I never understood why these never took off the way Mogwai did. Not my favourite postpunk/postrock outfit. But definitely underrated. Kind of like a Mogwai/Portishead milkshake. Maybe they just missed the wave when GSYBE/Mogwai/explosions in the sky etc were having their day.

I've always been a big fan of sepultura. They're just one of those outfits that can make even other metal groups come across like take that. Just absolutely insane, thumping, against-the-grain Brazilian thrash sludge, featuring the great Igor Cavalera on drums. Bacana! When the brothers parted ways and Derek Green was brought in, this album was unfairly dismissed out-of-hand. A great injustice, because it's as heavy and nasty as anything ever produced featuring Max Cavalera under the brand name.

Mike Patton. Where do I even begin? Faith no more. Mr Bungle. Fantomas. Very likely one of the most important musical artists in the last twenty years, and thankfully I've been able to see him in various incarnations no less than 5 times live, though I wish it were more. The Fantomas show was one of the best I've ever experienced.

Tomahawk flew under the radar for a lot of people, the first album especially is amazing.

I saw The Prodigy at a festival many years ago, three points of Goey and God knows how many beers down the tube. LOUD. I was maybe two rows from the front and at one point I was fairly certain my internal; organs were being damaged by the bass. I didn't really like Fat of the Land when it dropped (Edit: Smack my bitch up is the best film clip ever made and a killer track) too commercial, but MFTJG is a banger of an album. I don't think they really turned it around until the Dirt Chamber sessions, but that might have been a side-project by Liam or whatever.

Mr Bungle's California is an almost indescribable work of demented genius and is in my opinion one of the most underrated albums of all time. Try and find another band that can blend thrash metal, the beach boys, barbershop, elevator music, Gregorian chant, lounge music and whatever the fuck everything else is in this glorious milkshake and somehow pull it off. You won't. Will not happen.

Smack your bitch up!
They played it that RTE 2 late night program must be nearly 30 odd years ago.
The only music video that left me speechless.
We'd just come back from the pub and it was.
What the fuck!
Proper edgy!

I loved her Let England Shake album, tried the other albums but not as fussed and didn't buy them. I did spring for the Let England Shake album on vinyl though.

Hahah, yeah. The ending when you find out the POV is a girl is great. The unedited version didn't last long on Australian telly before the censors AKA fun police stepped in.

I've always been in two minds about PJ. It's not that I don't like her per se, it's just that I don't rate her as a standalone artist. Or maybe that's not accurate. I think what I mean is that she's overrated. She's kind of not great at any aspect of music. Not a great vocalist, player, or lyricist. I feel like the reason she got so big was because she was sexy as fuck and teamed up with a lot of other great musicians like Homme, Cave, Parish etc. Put it this way; she's no Gwen Stefani, who many years ago I saw ripping through an octave without skipping a beat, upside down and hanging by her legs from some lighting scaffolding she'd climbed that was at least twenty feet in the air. Never tell me we're all born equal!

I dunno, I probably shouldn't trash PJ too hard. I say all this but I guarantee at some point some song of hers will come on the radio while I'm working outside in the garage or whatever and I'll start humming it, so she can't be that bad.

Recommend Kendra Morris. Bought this album on the cover alone in a shop. It was in the soul section so I'd a fair idea what was in store. Its a modern album but with strong throw back vibes. Does that count as contemporary?

I'm a total mark for shit like this. I love Motown/RNB/Soul. And earlier, the flamingos, The Moonglows, etc. I shouldn't like it as a metal head but it is what it is lol. Sometimes I'll just have things playing at random and after Angel of Death, the next thing on shuffle will be Brenda Holloway.

Stories from the city.
Stories from the sea.
That is a genuinely brilliant album!
