It's the dirty yanks who are bigging up the nuclear threat.
Then again, the dirty yanks are the only ones to have ever actually used nuclear/atomic weapons in a war, ever!

Talk of nuclear red button ‘inappropriate’ – Lavrov

Russia does not want an atomic war and never has, the foreign minister emphasized

Russia has no wish to start a nuclear war and considers it “inappropriate” that its warnings of an escalation in the Ukraine conflict are being portrayed as an intention to use atomic weapons, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
Fears of an escalation between Russia and NATO have been intensifying in recent weeks, as Western states have stepped up discussions about allowing Ukraine to conduct missile strikes deep in Russian territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month warned that such permission would be taken as the West’s direct involvement in the conflict and would be met with an appropriate response. His words were taken by some to mean Moscow was ready to deploy nuclear weapons.
In an interview with Sky News Arabia, Lavrov was asked whether this was the case. The minister responded that while Russia indeed has “weapons that would have serious consequences for the handlers of the Ukrainian regime” – meaning the US and its Western allies – it has no wish to use them.
“We talk about red lines, counting on the fact that our assessments and statements will be heard by smart, decision-making people. To claim that if tomorrow someone doesn’t do what we ask, we will press the ‘red button,’ is inappropriate,” the minister stated, adding that he believes Western decision makers understand this, because “nobody wants a nuclear war.”
Russia had reason to use nukes, but showed restraint – Medvedev READ MORE: Russia had reason to use nukes, but showed restraint – Medvedev
Lavrov stressed that Moscow also does not want an escalation of the Ukraine conflict that would drag the West in as a direct participant, but reiterated that this would inevitably be the case if Kiev is allowed to use long-range weapons deep inside Russia.
“It would be a direct war of NATO against Russia… NATO is already waging a war against Russia, but it is a hybrid war through the hands of Ukrainians. If we are talking about long-range missile weapons, it is clear to everyone that the Ukrainians themselves will not be able to use them,” he stated, explaining that tasks such as target guidance, data collection from satellites and forming flight assignments can only be carried out by specialists from countries that produce a particular weapon.
Lavrov went on to accuse Western officials who are seriously considering allowing Ukraine to make indiscriminate attacks on Russia of having the “mindset of a child” playing with matches.

While there are still limitations on Ukraine’s use of some Western-made long-range weapons systems, Kiev has already repeatedly used them to target Russian territory, mainly striking civilians in Crimea and Donbass. In the past month, however, the US and UK have suggested they might allow these weapons to be used to strike targets deeper into internationally recognized Russian territory. The European Parliament earlier this week adopted a resolution calling on the EU to allow Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia with Western-supplied weapons.

US crackdown on RT to fall short of expectations – NYT

The latest US crackdown on RT will ultimately not prevent it from bringing alternative viewpoints to audiences in the West and elsewhere, but will somewhat damage its outreach to new followers, the New York Times reported on Saturday, citing experts.
Last week, the US announced a new raft of sanctions targeting several Russian outlets, after Washington claimed they had been trying to covertly “undermine democracy.” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused RT of “functioning as a de facto arm of [Russian] intelligence.” State Department spokesman Jamie Rubin blamed RT for the fact that “so much of the world has not been as fully supportive of Ukraine as you would think they would be.”
Following the move, US tech giant Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, banned several Russian news networks.
Moscow has condemned the restrictions, labeling them a crackdown on free speech and an outright “aggression.”

Several media experts told the NYT that while the sanctions “will sharply reduce the network’s audience numbers” in the short term, RT “can move to other outlets for distribution,” adding that “the Kremlin, when thwarted in the past, has quickly devised new ways to get its message out.”
The paper recalled the impact of EU and Canadian sanctions on RT following the start of the Ukraine conflict, noting that while viewership fell off a cliff for a time, the outlet soon started operating through new resources.
“If you are a really hardcore RT follower, you’ll find a way to access it,” Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund told the NYT, adding that the sanctions, however, “really hurt… their ability to span platforms, to reach new audiences.”
RT relies heavily on messaging that portrays the West as “an imperialist aggressor,” the paper said, helping to explain why it is “extremely popular” in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.
“A big part of Russia’s PR strategy is to tap into criticism of America… and right now they have the easiest time in the world in that regard because American policy when it comes to Israel and Gaza is incredibly unpopular worldwide,” said H.A. Hellyer, a nonresident scholar on Middle East politics at the Carnegie Endowment.
According to the NYT article, RT also has a variety of means for getting its message out through mirror sites, Reddit, or other platforms like Telegram, X, and WhatsApp.

Commenting on US sanctions on RT, Deputy Editor-in-Chief Anna Belkina stressed that they are further proof that Washington is “terrified of any truly dissenting voice,” vowing that RT “isn’t going anywhere” and “will continue to find new ways to reach audiences – in every corner of the world.”

Warsaw reminds Kiev of its Nazi past

Ukraine has “problems” with its history, Polish President Andrzej Duda has said, highlighting Kiev’s collaboration with Nazi Germany and its involvement in the Holocaust during World War II.
In an interview with Polsat News on Monday, the Polish leader said there were “difficult topics” between Warsaw and Kiev, referring to the Volyn massacre – the mass killing of ethnic Poles by Ukrainian nationalists during World War II.
“Please remember that Ukrainians have many problems with their history. This is not only the problem of the Volyn massacre, but also service in SS units, collaboration with the authorities of the Third Reich, and participation in the Holocaust,” Duda said.
The remark comes amid recent tensions between Ukraine and Poland, despite Warsaw being one of Kiev’s key backers in its conflict with Moscow.
Polish PM threatens to block Ukraine’s EU bid READ MORE: Polish PM threatens to block Ukraine’s EU bid
In August, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosyniak-Kamisz threatened to block Ukraine’s bid to join the EU unless it accedes to demands for Volyn massacre victims to be exhumed. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski also supported this stance and raised the issue at a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev earlier this month.
Militants with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) slaughtered up to 100,000 Poles between 1943 and 1945 in the regions of Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, which currently belong to Ukraine.
While Warsaw has recognized the massacre as a genocide of Poles, modern Ukraine has been celebrating the perpetrators as “freedom fighters” and “national heroes.” The OUN was led by Stepan Bandera, a notorious Nazi collaborator who is widely revered in modern Ukraine.
Millions of Ukrainians served in the Soviet Red Army during the war, but thousands of others fought on the German side under the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, known as the Galicia Division.
The division, formed in 1943, attracted volunteers from what is now western Ukraine. Its members took a personal oath to Adolf Hitler and have been accused of atrocities against Jews, as well as Polish and Soviet civilians.
Duda, however, criticized his government for stirring up tensions between Warsaw and Kiev, saying that Poland should not make the issue of restoring historical truth a condition for Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

End of Ukraine conflict ‘closer’ – Zelensky

Negotiating with Russia is not necessary to stop the fighting, the Ukrainian leader has claimed

The end of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev could be closer than one might think, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has said.
Zelensky made the statement in an interview with ABC News, extracts of which were released on Tuesday. The Ukrainian leader is currently in the US, where he is expected to meet with President Joe Biden, members of Congress, and both presidential contenders – Kamala Harris and Donald Trump – to present them with his ‘peace plan,’ which he recently renamed a ‘victory plan.’ He said last week that the scheme could end the fighting between Russia and Ukraine by the end of this year if the West makes “quick decisions” on increasing its support for Kiev.
"I think that we are closer to the peace than we think. We are closer to the end of the war. We just have to be very strong, very strong,” Zelensky suggested.
As the details of his plan remain unknown, host Robin Roberts asked the Ukrainian leader whether it includes direct talks between the sides.
"It is not about negotiation with Russia,” he replied, adding that his scheme is intended to serve as “a bridge to [a] diplomatic way how to stop the war.”

According to Zelensky, his ‘victory plan’ is aimed at “the strengthening of Ukraine, Ukrainian army and Ukrainian people. Only in the strong position we can push [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to stop the war - diplomatic way.”
“That is why we are asking our friends, our allies, to strengthen us. It is very important,”
he added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to the Ukrainian leader’s claim that the end of the conflict could be near by reiterating that Russia will stop its military operation only after all of its goals are achieved “one way or another.”
According to a report in the Sunday Times, Zelensky’s ‘victory plan’ has four key clauses, including Western security guarantees for Ukraine similar to NATO’s principle of collective defense, the continuation of Kiev’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region to serve as a territorial bargaining chip, deliveries of “specific” advanced weapons by foreign backers, and international financial aid for Ukraine.

Peskov stressed on Monday that Moscow is so far unable to properly evaluate the initiative coming from Kiev because there is too little credible information about it. When asked about the specifics of Zelensky’s ‘victory plan,’ Russia’s first deputy envoy to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said “it is hard for us to understand what is on the madman’s mind.”

Zelensky speaks out against peace talks with Russia

Moscow has accused the West of turning the UN Security Council into a stage for the Ukrainian leader

The conflict in Ukraine cannot be resolved through negotiations, and decisive action is needed to “force”Russia into submission, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has told the UN Security Council.
Addressing a special UNSC session attended by nearly a dozen pro-Kiev non-member delegations, Zelensky insisted that “action” is necessary against Moscow because the conflict “can't be calmed by talks” and will not “simply fade away.”
“Russia can only be forced into peace, and that is exactly what's needed: forcing Russia into peace as the sole aggressor in this war, the sole violator of the UN Charter,”
he claimed, without specifying what actions he had in mind.
Zelensky once again promoted his ‘peace formula’ and called on countries to “prepare a second peace summit” to end the conflict. He invited China, Brazil, the United States and others to participate, but did not specify what would be discussed.

“We know some in the world want to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin. We know it. To meet, to talk, to speak. But what could they possibly hear from him?” Zelensky stated.
Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, has criticized the meeting as yet another staged one-man show organized by Kiev’s Western backers.
“The only reason they called this meeting was to provide Mr. Zelensky with another concert venue at the United Nations, this time in the Security Council chamber. Today, he has a whole group of EU and NATO members ‘singing along,’ marching in lockstep every time they are called upon to come to the Security Council to malign the Russian Federation,” Nebenzia said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Zelensky said in an interview with ABC News that his “peace” initiative, recently rebranded as a “victory plan,” does not depend on negotiations with Russia but is aimed at boosting Ukraine’s military capabilities.

“It is not about negotiation with Russia,” he insisted, arguing that only by “strengthening Ukraine, the Ukrainian army, and the Ukrainian people… only in a strong position can we push Putin to stop the war.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to the Ukrainian leader’s claim that the end of the conflict could be near by reiterating that Kiev must accept the reality on the ground and that Moscow will stop its military operation only after all of its goals are achieved “one way or another.”

US lawmaker demands real Ukrainian casualty figures

Congress should know the situation before it continues to fund Kiev’s war effort, a Republican representative has argued
US lawmaker demands real Ukrainian casualty figures

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has demanded information on Ukraine’s losses in the conflict with Russia as a condition for approving further military assistance to Kiev, and accused US officials of keeping lawmakers in the dark on the issue.
This summer, the Kentucky representative introduced an amendment to next year’s National Defense Authorization Act, requiring a “report on the casualty and equipment losses for both sides involved in the conflict.” According to the politician, the amendment has been approved by the House and will be reviewed by the Senate.
In an interview on Monday, Massie told the ‘Responsible Statecraft’ online magazine that American security and foreign policy officials have been painstakingly avoiding the topic of casualties since the start of the hostilities.
He described how intelligence officials dodged his questions on the issue during a closed briefing earlier this year. “They really didn't have an excuse, other than they weren't really sure, which seems like an incredible lie,” the Republican said.

According to Massie, even House Speaker Mike Johnson does not know the real numbers.
“I think it's obvious that they're just feeding us propaganda in classified settings, and then I think it's also true that the Speaker himself has been a subject of propaganda and lacks the curiosity to even question the narrative that we're being fed,” he told the magazine.
Washington is “just giving us one side to try and motivate us to keep sending the money and weapons.” According to the congressman, the State Department is “afraid if we got any bit of bad news about how the war was going, that there would be a reluctance from Congress to keep funding it.”

Congress needs to know the full picture, including the “bad news” before making any decisions on supporting Kiev any further, the lawmaker believes.
“If they are worried that knowing this number might diminish the appetite for funding the war, then that’s the main reason that Congress needs to know the casualty numbers,” he said.
Kiev has been reluctant to share any data on its losses in to the conflict. Last week, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky accused the Wall Street Journal of lying when the paper claimed that around 80,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed 400,000 more wounded.
In February, Zelensky said 31,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed in two years of fighting. The Washington Post then reported in April that the Ukrainian leader had “vastly downplayed” the toll.
Russia has previously estimated Ukraine’s losses at around half a million troops. Moscow does not reveal the exact number of its own casualties either, but President Vladimir Putin said in June that the losses were “one to about five” in Russia’s favor.

Vladimir Zelensky has dismissed a Wall Street Journal report on Ukrainian casualties in the conflict with Russia as fake news.
On Tuesday, the newspaper claimed that around 80,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed and around 400,000 more were wounded. The journal cited “a confidential Ukrainian estimate” from unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
Reporters asked Zelensky on Friday to comment on the WSJ’s estimate. “80,000? That is a lie. The actual figure is much lower than what has been published. Significantly so,” he claimed.
While Kiev does not provide regular updates on casualties, commanders and regular soldiers have repeatedly admitted to heavy losses on the battlefield, particularly during the failed 2023 counteroffensive and the recent fighting in Donbass.

In February, Zelensky said that 31,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed in two years of fighting, without mentioning the number of wounded. The Washington Post cited an unnamed Ukrainian lawmaker in April as saying that Zelensky had “vastly downplayed” the death toll in order to preserve morale amid Ukraine’s flagging mobilization drive. Ukraine has since expanded its conscription laws to draft more men.

The WSJ estimate of 480,000 killed and wounded corresponds with an earlier estimate provided by Russia, which reported in April that Ukraine had lost around half a million troops. Kiev has since lost more than 15,650 soldiers during its invasion of Russia’s Kursk Region, which began in August, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Moscow does not reveal its own casualties. President Vladimir Putin, however, said in June that the battlefield losses were “one to about five” in Russia’s favor. He previously stated that the West is ready to “fight to the last Ukrainian,” using Kiev as a tool in its proxy war against Russia.

Russian victory ‘inevitable’ – Lavrov

Russian victory ‘inevitable’ – Lavrov

Moscow will achieve victory in Ukraine because that is the only language the West understands, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
Lavrov flew to New York on Wednesday to take part in the 79th plenary session of the UN General Assembly and hold a series of bilateral meetings. Before his departure from Moscow, he spoke to TASS about the current situation in the world.
“Wherever the West infiltrates to ‘fix’ a crisis,” Lavrov told the news agency, “things only get much worse: thousands of victims, devastation and socio-economic problems follow. In my years of work in the international arena, there has not been a single case of the West’s intervention resulting in anything good. And now we’re seeing the same thing with Ukraine and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
Asked what the solution to that problem might be, Lavrov was direct.
“Victory. They don’t understand any other language."
"And that victory will be achieved, we have no doubt whatsoever,” the veteran Russian diplomat said. “We have truly united in the face of the war that the West unleashed against us with Ukrainian hands.”
According to Lavrov, the collective West seeks to “subjugate” the entire world to its “rules-based international order,” a notion conjured up by the US and its allies about a decade or so ago.
No one has ever spelled out what these “rules” might be, Lavrov said, aside from letting Washington do whatever it wants in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, the Balkans, Ukraine, the Caucasus, Central Asia, or in the South China Sea.
Putin’s Kamala endorsement was a joke – Lavrov READ MORE: Putin’s Kamala endorsement was a joke – Lavrov
“They have tried to act everywhere like a hegemon, like an elephant in a china shop,” Lavrov told TASS. “In Afghanistan, they declared the mission of fighting terrorism. When they fled after 20 years, there were many more terrorists there. In Iraq, they destroyed a normal, stable country. Not to mention Libya, which was prosperous,” he added.
To illustrate how the West has trampled the UN Charter, Lavrov pointed to the 2008 declaration of independence by ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, a province of Serbia which has been under NATO control since 1999. The US backed the declaration, calling it self-determination, and pressured the top UN court to rule that such declarations did not require the consent of the central government, the Russian diplomat explained. But when Crimea held a referendum – unlike Kosovo – following the 2014 US-backed coup in Kiev, the West rejected the principle of self-determination and insisted that “territorial integrity of Ukraine” was paramount instead

The ‘victory plan’ of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is being undermined by the grim reality that his nation does not have enough manpower or resources to prevail over Russia, The Economist reported on Thursday.
Zelensky is currently visiting the US to promote his proposal, which reportedly boils down to the West increasing its support so Kiev can continue fighting. The British magazine described the backdrop for the visit, explaining the dire situation affecting the Ukrainian economy and military manpower. Unlike Moscow, which is fielding volunteers, Kiev relies on forced conscription, it said.
”Officers complain that many of those drafted into service are ill-suited to fighting: too old, too ill, too drunk. There is no clear path out of the army once in it, which makes being mobilized seem like a one-way ticket to the morgue,” The Economist said.
”Some 5-10% of soldiers on active duty are absent without leave,” it added, noting that “fewer than 30% of Ukrainians consider draft-dodging shameful.”

There is a generational gap, with younger men eligible for military service being far less inclined to support Zelensky’s uncompromising stance, compared to those too old to be recruited, the report added.
In a separate editorial article on Thursday, the magazine accused Zelensky of “defying reality” with his military strategy, warning that he would “drive away Ukraine’s backers and further divide Ukrainian society” if he keeps pursuing it.
Ukraine needs to redefine victory over Russia as “becoming a prosperous, Western-leaning democracy,” after making concessions for the sake of peace. In return for “embracing this grim truth, Western leaders need to make his overriding war aim credible by ensuring that Ukraine has the military capacity and security guarantees it needs,” it suggested.
Moscow has stated that NATO’s intention to draw Ukraine into its ranks was one of the key triggers for the hostilities. Its vision for a stable peace includes a cap on Ukraine’s military strength and its non-alignment. Kiev agreed to those terms during peace talks in the early phase of the conflict, but then reportedly made a U-turn at the West’s suggestion.
