we live in a mushroom polytunnell covered by black plastic which keeps out not just the light but the noise and visual experience of the outside world .

That is consistent with a gremlin-style shadowban. They knew it was you signing up under a different name, so they allowed you to sign up, but not others. Get someone else to try to sign up (not from your device or location) and see what happens.
