Rawlton House, not all that far from Croke Park in Dublin's North Inner City, and usually referred to as the Portland Place protest, a sort of Community Centre that had earlier for example been used for Fás courses and activities like that, has been mooted as another migrant IPAS centre.
This has raised great concerns among the local community who protest outside it every evening from about 6pm on and on Mondays a larger crowd gathers and does a walk around the area, or at least up to the main road a few yards from the House. They are in contact with the relevant government departments, who claim there is no IPAS centre been proposed, but frankly the Irish government lies about this all the time and they can see the ongoing development work there and TVs etc been bused in.
This protest attracted some headlines recently because of a small altercation with a local TD, Gary Gannon. His mother lives very close to this house, and because of a mix up she mistakenly thought her house was targeted, while in fact the protesters, who are no fans of Gannon, nonetheless had no wish at all to disturb this local elderly lady.
In any case they hope to persist and are given timely assistance by other Dublin veterans from the Finglas protests (and my thanks to Tony for the following interview).
