This isn't entirely unexpected. I wonder what security measures he had in place when speaking at events like these. The format he opted for - sitting in front of a large crowd and fielding questions - was risky; especially in a country like the US which is awash with lunatics, drugs (legal and illegal) and guns.

I'm also not surprised given the utter hatred and seething malice held by a lot of the shitlib left towards right wingers.

If you venture over to a site like Reddit, you can see, daily, shitlibs being very open about their desire to see Trump and other Republicans suffer a heart attack, get struck down with cancer.

Even the recently departed gaychat.ie was full of complete and utter loons who had nothing but pure hatred for Trump and his supporters (and these were geriatrics posting in Ireland).

I realised long ago that the shitlib left are full of hatred, without any redeeming qualities. You don't see nearly the same hatred and loathing coming from the other side.

scanning the various sites I noticed some commentary that Kirk had become more critical of Israel in recent weeks.

Some speculation too that he was too 'understanding' of the Russian position, or at least that Ukraine should not be a focus of US efforts.

also some suggestions that it was Iranians.
