The female ego is a curious beast and must be carefully negotiated. I've become better at this with age, but definitely wouldn't consider myself an expert. Does any such man truly exist? Here's a couple of things I know for sure: A) Beware women approaching, or over the age of forty who wear very large, heavy necklaces, especially those fashioned from sterling silver and ovoid or teardrop semiprecious stones. Double points if said stones are amethysts. This is the female equivalent of a string of ears strung around an amazonian warrior's neck; a kind of death-totem or forewarning, as reliable as the bright, vivid colouration of a toxic frog. B) I know the fast-track to making your girl incredibly pissed off, and it is amazing and surprisingly simple. All one need do is compare something she does negatively to something your former girl did, and the more drudgerous or mundane the task being contrasted, the shorter the path to wrath, and the longer the wrath will persist. I didn't set out on this voyage of discovery, you understand. I arrived at shit-town via unhappy accident, through a throwaway remark. She'd ironed a shirt of mine and there were kinds of creases around the top button area. I complained about this, and she replied that it just happens sometimes. I said I never noticed this happen when my former partner did it. Now, I saw her darken at this, and tried to correct course by quickly adding that it didn't matter and that some people are just better than other people at some things. Not only did this not help, it made it even worse.
