Message: <blockquote data-quote="AUL LAD" data-source="post: 110631" data-attributes="member: 406">no trickier than explaining an Irishman in the UK where i worked and lived for years-- nobody thought i should be deported and i lived in London during the 70s . the IRA set off 11 bombs one night and i was transferring cars from maidstone in kent to 35 edgeware rd where i worked for hertz . as i drove down connacht st a wall of grey plate glass  was blasted across the intersection i just passed and i came to a policeman in the middle of the road and i waved my id badge and shouted and pointed  i work just there.  he was completely hysterical and screamed at me to go  go go and i spent the night in the underground garage listening to bombs going off .i shared my meager lunch sometimes with the Irish who slept on cardboard in the underpass between marble arch and Hyde park corner and they slept in the doorways of the shops in oxford st --nobody lives on oxford st  except the homeless --many of them Irish many of them abused and mentally ill --this is who the IRA bombed in 1976 --the most  penniless vulnerable Irish you could find .nobody spoke to me for 2 weeks after but had that copper heard my accent and had his wits about him i could have spent years in jail just merely for passing through and the interrogation would have marked me for life  .we Irish who have lived abroad which is many of us -- do not have a problem with the thousands of British who live in west cork and would not extradite one of them to France as was asked of us lately  --that incident did a lot for the  unspoken secret relationship between  us and  the Brits who live here and who are welcome as are the Irish who live and work hard and prosper in the UK . they saw they had rights and had the same rights as an Irish person --it was noticed and when it becomes time to re unite Ireland i will be glad to say i behaved like a united Irishman today to make it easier for republicans and Brits to do a deal when the time comes . you cant be on your best behavior only on the wedding day --it has to be for real today  if you believe in a republic for all Irish in the future.</blockquote>
