I think Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together,”</em> Trump said. </p><p></p><p>Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was standing behind the US president when he made the remarks, responded by calling Trump a <em>“man of peace,”</em> and praised his efforts to end several conflicts. </p><p><em>“Today again I want to nominate the great president for the Nobel Peace Prize because he has not only brought peace in South Asia but saved millions of lives,”</em> Sharif said. <em>“I would like to salute you for your exemplary leadership and I think the world will remember you as the man who went out of his way and stopped eight wars.” </em></p><p>A terrorist attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir in April killed 26 civilians, prompting New Dehli to retaliated with strikes in Pakistan. A brief conflict followed before a ceasefire was announced between the two neigbors.</p><p>Before New Delhi could announce an end to the fighting, Trump posted on social media that a deal between India and Pakistan had been reached following a <em>“long night of talks”</em> mediated by Washington. New Delhi has repeatedly denied the claim.</p><p>Trump has also said he threatened to impose tariffs on the South Asian neighbors if they didn’t stop fighting. This has also been refuted by the Indian government.</p><p>Several US officials have repeated Trump’s claims on using trade as a means to stop the military confrontation. In May, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the US Court of International Trade that the India-Pakistan <a href="https://www.rt.com/india/618294-trumps-trade-offer-pakistan-ceasefire/" target="_blank">ceasefire</a> <em>“was only achieved after President Trump interceded and offered both nations trading access with the United States to avert a full-scale war.”</em></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><h3></h3></blockquote><p></p>
