The Department of Education, who have a lot of their national offices here, and maybe other government departments, own a comparatively large greenfield site on the Eastern side of Athlone town, Co. Westmeath. This bounded by the Ballymahon road out of Athlone to the North, the motorway to the South and the slip road off the motorway to the East. This already contains a migrant centre and last Monday week locals were told that a new large centre, with upwards of 1,000 people, was to be accommodated on this site. That first word, given to local Councillors on the Monday, was followed by heavy machinery moving in the next day, Tuesday, much to the horror of many locals in Athlone. Particularly on the two Saturdays since then, but in fact every evening, there has been large protests against this site.
It is being developed by Trailhead Unlimited, a company, the government assures us, with great experience in the field. But when local Councillors pursued the matter they found that the company was only founded about three weeks ago, with just a company postal box in Dublin and no way of finding out who actually benefits from this large and lucrative government contract. Meanwhile last night, Friday 19th Oct 2024, one of the protestors seeking to block security staff from entering and leaving the site, was actually run over by the security guard's jeep. He, Michael Clavin, was admitted to hospital in Tullamore for quite serious tests and injuries, but he managed to make it to the protest on the Saturday, albeit on crutches.
