What is interesting is that Mr Roc portrays Tommy as someone who is authentic and speaks from the heart, very much like Mowl. When the EDL started I do think part of their thing was to gatekeep (dissident) nationalism as you put it, the BNP was around than and could have easily appeared a real threat. Now I think things are different.

I think he genuinely romanticizes both the Mowl and Tommy- the thing is I believe that both those characters are very far a simple directness uncomplicated by neurosis and showmanship.

The BNP primarily destroyed itself from within- however Tommy and Farage were I believe clearly Establishment operatives set up to weaken it.

Listening to that scrapped and scratched metaphorical pints of blood out of my psyche, I think I lost parts of my soul listening to all that but I don't think they were parts that I was using so at least there is that. What a fatuous farce of an event. The opposition clearly won but saying that is damning them with faint praise. The only character there who came across as an authentic half decent at least person was Michael Doward but I don't think he would claim any intellectual prowess for himself. Oxford was founded by serious minded pious Catholics zealous in their love of wisdom and knowledge for their own sake.

You cannot go over the top with this but when raising kids it is important to give them some freedom and right to decision making in order to nurture a sense of responsibility. If people have no power in a situation they are not going to feel much in the way of an imperative to think things out in a responsible fashion. It is understandable why today many people in the West view politics as something to seek entertainment from and a similar sense of belonging as people get from supporting soccer teams rather than as something demanding in any way serious engagement.
