All a bit vague and interchangeable.

The term slurry pit harks back to the days when it was simply emptied into a hole dug into the ground which may or may not have been lined with clay or concrete.

Farmers have been encouraged to do better over the years and now most farms have properly designed and built s,latted tanks, paid for by you know who.

To spread the slurry vacuum ‘tankers’ are used which have an air pump on the front which sucks the air out and so sucks the slurry in as it does so. To spread the slurry the process is reversed and the tank is pressurised to push it out.

The fluid used to be squirted against a splash plate but these have now been superseded by dribble bars or trailing shoe machines which lay the slurry on the ground.

But like all things if you have the readies there are fancy tankers which use displacement pumps to move the stuff about.

Slurry spreading relies on the material having no lumps in it and the mechanism of distribution would not allow for human remains much larger than a finger or so to be applied to the field.

It is highly unlikely that a recognisable human vertebra would pass through a trailing shoe or dribble bar tanker without it blocking.

correct me if I am wrong but is the purpose of the agitator just to shake up the slurry to ensure the dangerous gases are vented off somewhat safely before the slurry is to be removed and spread. Some might think it is part of the mechanism in the spreader which is powered by the PTO

The agitator didnt chop the body into minute pieces. It couldn't have done.. The remains were in small pieces as they entered the pit. What went in the coffin were small bits that were found, teeth, fingers etc I imagine. I guess this was to give the man some dignity back
