How much are people's politics a product of their personality?

Obviously it varies.

Probably the more rational and the more they care about the common good the less someone's political convictions and understandings will primarily be a reflection of their personal psychological and emotional make up.

However people are becoming less and less rational and/or dutiful towards common goods- hence political divisions become more bitter as they come to more and more reflect differing types of personality and less and less anything else.

I wouldn't be sure of mapping(s) between personality traits and political opinions. Any ideas yourself?
 
I would say people who are truly religious are more likely to be truly right-wing.
