Taoiseach calls for 'respect' for monarchists after RTÉ criticised for coronation broadcast plans

THE TAOISEACH HAS called for respect for people who support the monarchy in the UK after two People Before Profit TDs questioned the amount of time that RTÉ is devoting to the coronation this weekend.

The UK’s King Charles and his wife Camilla are due to be crowned in London this Saturday to much fanfare.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said today that the model of constitutional monarchy is backed by a majority of people in the UK, responding to criticism from Paul Murphy and Richard Boyd Barrett.

The two TDs raised concerns that RTÉ One is devoting four hours to televised coverage of Saturday’s events in London.

Murphy described the monarchy as an institution built on “racism, privilege and empire” and claimed the coronation was a “very obvious attempt to rehabilitate that institution”.

“Some republicans are saying that they are going to attend this coronation on the grounds of reaching out to the unionist community,” he said.

“We think it is perfectly possible and necessary to build a united socialist movement of working-class people from a Catholic background, Protestant background, and a non-religious background, not on the basis of this sort of anachronistic and hated institution, but on the basis of the interests of ordinary people and the need for a socialist Ireland in a socialist world.

“Even in Britain only 29% of people think that the monarchy is very important, it’s an increasingly unpopular institution. But, yet, if you turn on RTÉ on Saturday, you’re going to be treated to four hours of the coronation.

“Why on earth is our state broadcaster spending four hours on a Saturday displaying this so-called coronation?”

He has a point in that an awful lot of Prods have no use for the Monarchy outside of it being something to troll themuns with. I think the carry on of Michelle O'Neill in this regard is not so much reaching out to the "unionist community" but rather demonstrating to Dublin senior civil servants, London, Brussels and Washington that they are now firmly "grown up".

The British should have an elected head of State, then they wouldn't end up with some as truly awful as Charlie Windsor. You know, an elected Head of State, just like Ireland has with Higgins. The English can say 'Not My King' but what excuse can the Irish give?
The British get a WEF-er and we get a fella kicked out of the Leprechaun club for being annoying ! ! !

Heads you lose = = Tails you lose.

Gotta have a bit of razzmatazz to perk up the auld arm sales to dodgy regimes now that they can get barely used kit cheap from even dodgier Ukrainian generals.

As an Irish man, I admire England's past trade, enterprise and particularly its engineers. I go to England now and again to see its model engineering exhibitions. I sell my farm food into England at great prices, I had a fling with an English woman years ago before I met the Missus car.

That said I hate all things Roman Empire and all things British aristocracy. I hate the Tower of London and the
executions. The execution of Oliver Plunket makes me angry. Dianna was treated bad. I would have had her pregnant 15 times. Charles is a bit green and into climate crap. Without a King, we would have President Tony Blair or a big black or brown jungle migrant as president. Even is we had no history, Ireland would have to be represented at the coronation. It is unthinkable that Northern Ireland or this state should shun it. That would be only if we were at war and it would make the Queen's visit invitation false.

Its like being asked to a wedding when you don't like the couple, you have to go and you have to buy a toaster for
a present and a baby suit if she is up the pole. When its over, you talk about the food, the spuds, custard.
It's unthinkable?
Not really. These countries are not asked to come and pay tribute to the English King. Russia, Belarus, Iran, Myanmar, Syria, Afghanistan and Venezuela. None of whom are at war with the UK but beacuse they are actually self respecting Nations with some dignity they are not invited. They have less reason to maintain their dignity than Ireland does, as none their territory is currently occupied by Crown Forces.

Look, you can just lighten up about the execution of the former ArchBishop of Armagh Oliver Plunkett. The current ArchBishop of Armagh is relaxed about it, and even describes the King as a good friend of 'Northern' Ireland.

King is ‘a proven friend of Northern Ireland', cathedral service told

Del Boy Trotter gave a tow to an aristocratic lady who had just been to Charles and Diana's wedding (they later destroyed the chandelier in her gaff).

He said its a pity she didn't look them up beforehand because he was doing a line in toasters and they would've made a "blinding present".

I'd say the West brits in royal telefis eireann are enjoying the broadcast of THEIR KING , that's what's they are called now as far as I'm concerned .....always evermore

The right needs to calm down about Sinn Fein. It needs to chill out about the fact that the party’s vice-president, Michelle O’Neill, will be attending the coronation of King Charles. It needs to relax about that selfie featuring Sinn Fein’s former president, Gerry Adams, gurning next to Joe Biden during his jaunt in Ireland. It needs to stop fretting over the spike in support for Sinn Fein in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in recent years.

For all of this stuff is not proof that Sinn Fein’s old radical goal of creating a 32-county republic is gaining ground. On the contrary, it points to the neutering of Sinn Fein, to its hollowing out and humiliation; to the transformation of this once guerilla-style party into Ireland’s version of the Lib Dems. Pale, drab and madly keen to cosy up to the powerful, Sinn Fein has well and truly had its balls removed.

In sidling into Westminster Abbey, Michelle O’Neill is signalling her acceptance of the legitimacy of the British monarchy

Nothing about Sinn feins ball-less subservience to the British crown and head of their armed forces in this pathetic shitrag

No surprises there :) of course they still have the brass neck to laud dead volunteers

The First Minister of the north has to represent both sides of the community. Barbie's Ma was there on behalf of the unionist people.

Michael D Higgins today was the first Irish head of state to attend the coronation of a British monarch.

Northern Ireland is not at war with Britain and has a fragile peace process. O'Neil has to attend the coronation.

It is small minded to say she could shun it.
In what capacity did she have to attend this event ? She is the deputy leader of the Sinn Fein party and an MLA nothing more , they have once again shown what a tool of the elites they (Sinn Fein) are

Giving someone a cough sweet seems to bestow hero/heroine status these days

Emma Thompson saved the day for Coronation guest

Gyles Brandreth has revealed Dame Emma Thompson came to the aid of a fellow coronation guest when they began having a “coughing fit” during the ceremony.

Following the service at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, the writer and broadcaster recalled how the Oscar-winning actress produced a cough sweet from her handbag which was passed down the rows to help relieve the cougher amid one of the songs.

Brandreth hailed it as one of the “wonderful” moments during the ceremony, describing it as “magnificent” but “human”.
