People who were friends with Charlie said that he was friends with Morrison and actually tried to get him to stop drinking. They were both from Scotch Irish Dixie/Southron backgrounds though Morrison's Da was involved high up in Military Intelligence with the Yankee Navy and very possibly involved with MKULTRA projects- there are conspiract theories not just from the Right but also from the Left that "rock music" especially in a lot of it's harder and more drug infused aspects was sculpted by MKULTRA or MKULTRA like projects within the US State Apparatus as a weapon of psychological warfare.
The connections between the two was long suppressed by the mainstream media and even much of the alternative stuff as well so it is interesting that it is now beginning to come out if only in dribs and drabs.
The "60s" as a cultural phenomena has always struck me as the rise of a generalized infantilized insincerity when it did not represent a fall altogether from the integrally human into the zoological or the demonic but for all the darkness about and within them there did seem to be a fundamental authenticity about both Jim Morrison and Charles Manson though both were also tragic figures destructive ultimately to both their selves and others (and I say that as someone who does not believe that that Charles Manson was at all responsible for the mruders carried out by Susan Atkins and Tex Watkins).
Now of course with all this "rave", "trance", etc stuff things seem to have declined qualitively another level of darkness.
