Sorry for the delay, protests also involve an awful lot of hanging around and slow times as it were, and it was like that between roughly 10 to midnight in Coolock tonight. You can see in this video the Gardai, who are still very much out in force, and suspiciously active in circling around and reversing in and out with their many vehicles. (Some are speculating that they are not just carrying Gardai now, maybe moving in materials for the migrants that they couldn't get in by lorry earlier, or fencing material?. They later parked some vans so that you can no longer see into this area.) Anyway this short video features James, on crutches. He was just after arriving, having travelled for 4 hours from Ballina Co. Mayo in solidarity with Coolock. He is on crutches because he was beaten up in Ballina for being a protestor (it was not at the actual site, he is not sure exactly who they were, except they did it to him because he was a protestor.) Other protestors came from places like Roscrea, although the bulk are obviously locals. The sequence of events is as described earlier I believe, because anyway when you are actually there you tend to get a worms eye view of events! So basically at roughly 3pm the Public Order Unit were positioned shoulder to shoulder, or rather shield to shield, across this large dual carriageway and with batons and pepper spray cleared the road. But the Coolock people persisted and so it was a kind of running battle for many hours, the people dispersed then creeping back again then charged again etc. But it's hard to sustain this after about 10 pm because for some it began early in the morning, and this is an industrial/commercial area with all shops prematurely closed so people do get a bit cold and hungry after so many hours! There are reported to be 13 arrests, including Philip Dwyer and Gavin Pepper. It was also confirmed, by a respected experienced protestor, that at least one of the Gardai was in fact from the PSNI. Just to clarify the beginning as well: There were 3 people sleeping in the, large and well furnished, encampment, which has now been completely destroyed with the exception of one small chair and a speaker! That's what the JCB was destroying, but also at the beginning they had large lorries lined up to bring in supplies for the incoming migrants, including mattresses, some of which also caught fire. Another point is that one of the protestor tactics was to set fire to the contents of bins along the route and throw them into the middle of the road, to disrupt the Garda advance. Anyway the real question is will Coolock persist at this? The Gardai will stay there in force for at least a day or two but will the protesters continue to try and get an encampment going again? Hopefully they will!
