What's the deal with all the hyped up storms with names nowadays?

In the 90s/00s, I can't remember such things as Red/Orange/yellow warnings, Schools never shutdown due to a bit of wind or snow and storms didn't have names either. https://www.rte.ie/news/weather/2025/0122/1492183-storm-eowyn/
This one is going to be bad lads, for the Southwest, unless she veers North. 940hp depression. My neighbour is a skipper, says they are all making for port. Southerly storm, gotta admit I'm nervous. Stock up on candles🙄 Sick of this bloody weather.

In fairness, this one looks to be a bad one.

Yerra I'm Southwest of you ( presumeably) and the friggin' howling has started. I packed passports and documents laugh all you like.
This will be a wild one. The outer bands of this hurricane are here.
Not too southwest that I don't know what yerra means (basically how Kerry people begin a sentence :))

I think the code red doesn't start here in Dublin till 6am, so you're well ahead of us. Stay safe! Stay indoors

Down here in Co Cork the wind hit sometime in the early hours but the house still stands and, so far, touching wood, crossing fingers etc, no outages. Seems to be easing off now and as the light grows there will be a better idea of any damage, but I'm not at all sure that it was any worse than the last storm we had before Xmas, in fact some stuff that that moved then looks to have stayed in place this time round.

The snow storm of two weeks ago should defo have been a red but it wasn't called, now this, which is a lot easier to cope with and it's panic stations all round with politicians getting up on their hind legs to look very important indeed. It's all a show.

Got a feeling that we are going to hear a lot more about this one as it actually affected Dublin rather than just blew a few culchies about, but it wasn't as bad here as the one before Xmas.

Thankfully yes. Lost a few trees but nothing serious. Firewood for next winter.
Quiet here now, with sleety showers and the power's gone but we have gas stoves and wood burners. Curled up on couch with the hounds.

Well that sounds cosy enough :)

Sorry to hear your power's gone. No interruption here. Windy, the odd bin strewn about the place and car alarm going off but nothing very serious

Lots of trees, slates, roadsigns, haysheds down here in Roscommon. No electricty or water. Phone signals poor and broadband down.
Not a drop of bottled water to be got in the shops, except the fizzy stuff. Wonder what tae is like made with the fizzy stuff.

I feel for you. This was a the worst storm in my memory, with the worst impact on infrastructure. We'll laugh about it eventually but the cleanup will take weeks. And there is a new gale blowing here at the moment.
Sick to my teeth of weather.
Hope your services come back soon!!
