Why do Trendy Lefties Never Acknowledge the Good the Church has done in Ireland?

My dear grandmother used to laugh at the portrayal of old Ireland in the media. "You'd know these people never lived during those times", she would tell me.

The narrative from Rte, the Sunday Independent, idiots on p.ie and boards, politics isle, twatter etc goes something like this:

Pre about 1990 Ireland was a dark, desolate hellhole run by priests and bishops. The population at large were miserable, unhappy prisoners and incapable of excercising free will. Everything was awful and depressing. Nobody ever smiled or laughed. Every child bar none was sexually abused by a priest. It wasn't until the population at large embraced divorce, antidepressants, single mothers, drugs, stds, pornhub, mass immigration, smart phones, Panti Bliss and lgbtianity did we finally escape the rotten past and enter a world of technicolour and picnics and teddy bears.

Why do the trendy lefties never acknowledge a lot of good that the Church has done? Let us not forget that the Church largely carried the burden of educating young people for most of the state's existence. And given the general literacy that can be observed in those over 50 compared to the illerate smartphone generation - perhaps they didn't do such a bad job?

Then there's the admirable charity work that the Church engages in. Wonderful people like brother Kevin on Church Street or Sr Consilia in Cuan Mhuire; great people who selflessly devote their lives to the poor and destitute.

What about the priests who visit the sick and dying and give comfort to families?

What about the important role the Church plays in communities up and down the country?

Are the twitter trendies with their pride flags really much better?

The Church of Ireland? Ach I'm sure it has done good but its practically dead now. The Catholic church probably awaits a similar fate.

Well there is a lot psychologically and Spiritually going on there- part of it was that they were exposed to an extremely luke warm if not cold as in near dead form of Catholicism but yet Catholicism was sort of there, and they sense that there Is or at least was some important inner content there, so they secretly or not so secretly long for some incredibly harsh but luxuriant I guess Spanish hyper authoritarian Counter-Reformation form of Catholicism and let their imaginations run away with themselves. There is also the fact that it allows them to think of themselves as having been ultra-heroic rebels who spurned a massive historical tide and won. This is the Gen Xers.

Well I think the reason the trendies loathe the church so much is because it takes a dim view of their propensity for drug taking, spreading STDs, promoting broken families, porn and onlyfans - and, of course, the gay shite which has become a fanatical religion in this country.

Sorry I misread the title I thought it said Church of Ireland but its Church in Ireland.

From 14 to my early 20s I used to be the most painful type of High Anglican Zealot. In our house and some extent around the Catholic Church was THE Church and the Presbyterians were THE Kirk and everyone else were "Christians". I would rage that only the Church of Ireland had the right to be called the Catholic Church OR the Kirk in Ireland and that everyone else were schismatics or worse if I was pressed. It is always out to me that supposed super-Prods always refer to the Catholic Church in Ireland as the Church.

Good post, it's easy to attack the church but nobody ever praises the church.

The Irony is that it is pure evil that wants to destroy the church so what better way than to infiltrate it and destroy it from within?

The Church and what it stands for is always a bastion of good and deceny, it shouldn't be confused with those who do evil.

Despite being confused by 90+% of that post I still like it Zipporah.

It would've been no harm to have Staters, particularly mass goers, bussed up north to get a flavour of Christendom in its extended form.

I find a lot of the traditional bead-rattling types to be agonisingly dim and almost criminally boring.

What do you mean by traditional bead-rattling types?

Not you (if you're whom I think you are). For example the Order of Malta. Thick rimmed glasses, comb-overs and houses that smell of piss & biscuits.

I was involved with the youth crowd for a while when I was young, can't remember why. But they were dour kids. Wouldn't even have an icepop because of the sugar. And this was in the 80's/90's!

I knew some Legion of Mary wagons too. Christ do these women ever update their wardrobes?

But where are they now?

The Sovereign Military (military should be put in quotation marks) Order of Malta outside of Swords would be considered extremely "Posh". I have been in there place in Dublin which is almost next door to Seppo Embassy and straight forwardly next door to the probably the only classically High Anglican Parish in Ireland outside of St George's in Belfast which is extremely beautiful both inside and outside. I have bitchy comments about the dos we attended there- my better half quiped after we were leaving one that it is interesting Fianna Failers are almost always better dressed than Fine Gaelers- but I cannot imagine that it was like you claim in the 1990s.

I wouldn't have thought them posh I thought them just weird. Kind of like the Taig equivalent of the remnants of the southern Gentry who don't fit in anywhere anymore and look antiquated (Tweed jackets etc). The Malta crowd seemed like they'd spend half a day dithering over a menu or a shop item they're looking at, annoying all the regular people around them. Ponderous, strange people.

Then again they were just the one's I interacted with.

The Church is full of wonderful people like this - never acknowledged by the trendy lefty arseholes.

Compare the selfless, noble Br. Kevin to the spittle flecking virgin Ds - modern Ireland's best. Is there any comparison?

I understand a proportion of priests are gay.
I was told by a lay person in the know (SwordofStCatherine) that its upwards of 40%.

Makes you wonder what goes on below in Gaynooth College.

My aunti Ellie had beads and used to pray before a statue in the house when I was down visiting and working. She lived to 95 and was a
real lady and a gently soul.
She clearly was a great woman. Tisn't the likes of Ellie I'm having a pop at. Its more the proselytising crowd that annoy folk I'm on about Sir.
