It is suggested that carefully regulated and safe, non-injurious infliction of pain - without bloodshed - on convicted criminals will achieve four things:

1. Some reduction in recidivism.
2. Restorative justice and a happy feeling for victims of assault, rape, theft and threatening words.
3. A regular income stream from selling admission tickets and pay per view online. An option for prisoners to opt for a whipping instead of six months in prison will free up lots of prison space.
4. A stop to refugees and work permit foreigners coming here.

As well as whipping, other non-injurious ways of inflicting pain could be used - lifting the person up by their ears, twisting their arms behind their backs, a Chinese burn by twisting skin on the arm. Great care should be taken not to break bones or cause other permanent damage.

The Singapore model works very well in some ways but fails because it is private and because it causes bleeding and because women, boys and old guys are exempt.

I'll just repost a few comments from the other tread

Hermit:
It is true that corporal punishment does not necessarily deter people from crime. People commit horrific death sentence crimes in countries with capital punishment.

However, punishment should not only be about the criminal and determent. There is also the direct victim of the crime and society in general. I think it's important that they get to feel an appropriate level of justice and closure. Whipping, combined with public humiliation, might not straighten out every scumbag or deter others, but it would deter some and would at least feel cathartic for some victims.

I think it would be more satisfying to see scumbags acting the hard man get fucking humiliated in a public flogging than see them get dozens of convictions that do nothing to deter them. Many of these scumbags are not afraid of prison, some even like it, but they won't like physical pain and public humiliation. I think corporal punishment would definitely deter a lot of those council estate scumbags from anti-social behaviour - they only do it now because no one is allowed to stand up them vigilante-style and the Gardai and legal system do fuck all.

Those videos where some guy is acting the dickhead and someone knocks him out are very satisfying. Imagine if a scumbag hurt you or someone you care about, would you not want to see them get a beating? I would.

Mad as Fish:

Hardly the most valid of conclusions. Is the crime rate in Singapore any lower than in similar countries with similar cultures? What other deterrents are there? For what crimes is corporal punishment used and are the rates for these crimes significantly lower than elsewhere? etc etc.

An Ceannaire:

The questions were

Do smaller people get less

Do women get lashed

Would you yourself be willing to do the lashing.

Why is even a discussion about whether caning works. So to Singapore and see

Let's look at the irish evidence for corporal punishment and lower crime.

We were hanging people till we didn't hang that Mohangi bastard in the early 60s. Some of the hanged were undoubtedly innocent. RIP.

We were whipping the kids till the '70s.

Crime was WAY lower in the 60s. There were barely a dozen murders a year. Now it's one every other day. Plus general assaults are way up. And thieving. And general bad attitude.

There are lots of other reasons for the increase in crime - monkey see monkey do TV thuggery, a generally lower IQ cos of fluoride and vaccines and stuff, etc.

I think in the old days if some man proposed anal sex to you, you would just hit him a few digs for being so rude. Leftie Liam O'Flaherty punched a guy into the water when he was propositioned at the docks.

It was the socially acceptable thing to do.
