The Ukrainian military has been so depleted by attrition that new infantry troops are often unfit for combat and flee at the first sign of fighting, the Financial Times reported on Friday. In some units, around two thirds of soldiers are reportedly killed or wounded within days of arriving at the front.

Manpower shortages have plagued the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) for well over a year, according to reports in Ukrainian and Western media outlets. After multiple rounds of conscription, the average age of a Ukrainian soldier is now 45, and many of those sent to the front are unfit for combat, multiple commanders and soldiers told the British newspaper.

“When the new guys get to the position, a lot of them run away at the first shell explosion,” a deputy commander fighting near Ugledar in Donetsk Region said. Another commander whose unit is attempting to hold the nearby town of Khurakove said that “some guys freeze [because] they are too afraid to shoot the enemy, and then they are the ones who leave in body bags or severely wounded.”

The commanders estimated that 50-70% of new infantry troops are killed or wounded within days of starting their first rotation.

Russian forces have gained ground near Ugledar, Khurakove, and the key logistics hub of Povrovsk in recent weeks. Many of the AFU’s most experienced troops were pulled from this sector of the front in August to take part in the invasion of Russia’s Kursk Region, an operation that has cost Kiev more than 17,750 servicemen, over 130 tanks, and hundreds of other combat vehicles, according to the latest figures from the Russian Defense Ministry.

Experienced soldiers “are being killed off too quickly” and replaced by older and less fit men, another commander told the Financial Times. “As infantry, you need to run, you need to be strong, you need to carry heavy equipment,” he said, adding: “It’s hard to do that if you aren’t young.”

As of May, the Ukrainian military has been drafting 30,000 soldiers per month. However, AFU Commander-in-Chief General Aleksandr Syrsky admitted earlier this month that these new recruits are often sent to fight with as little as six weeks’ training. The commanders who spoke to the Financial Times said that they consider this training worthless, as many of the AFU’s instructors haven’t seen combat themselves.

“Some of them don’t even know how to hold their rifles,” one officer said. “They peel more potatoes than they shoot bullets,” he complained, explaining that he had bought paintball guns in order to teach his new men how to shoot without wasting ammunition.

Those who survive often go AWOL after their first rotation, while others are so shell-shocked and exhausted that they are checked into psychiatric wards, the newspaper reported. With the AFU under no legal obligation to demobilize troops, joining the army or getting conscripted is viewed by recruits as “a one-way ticket,” a ten-year veteran told the Financial Times.

While the Ukrainian military does not publish casualty figures, the Russian Defense Ministry estimates Kiev’s losses since February 2022 at around half a million men.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, however, maintains that with more Western weapons and money, Russia can be “forced into peace.” Moscow considers Zelensky’s belief in military victory “delusional,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier this week.

Ukrainian defense minister sacks deputies

The overhaul is meant to curb undue “external and internal influence,” Rustam Umerov has said

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustam Umerov has sacked four of his deputies, citing unacceptable “attempts of influence” on his department.
The announcement on Tuesday morning comes amid rumors that Umerov himself may lose his job over a reported conflict with Andrey Yermak, the powerful head of the presidential administration.
Explaining his decision, Umerov described the Defense Ministry as a “closed perimeter” that must work without external interference. The four officials dismissed are Stanislav Gayder, Aleksandr Sergiy, Yury Dzhigir, and Lydmila Daragan.
Gayder was appointed deputy last October and supervised institutional development issues in the ministry. He previously served in the national anti-corruption agency and will now move to another position in the Defense Ministry to serve as Umerov’s chief of staff.
Sergiy is a military engineer by background who has been a logistics specialist at the Defense Ministry since July. Dzhigir formerly worked in the Finance Ministry and was appointed deputy defense minister in September 2023, when Umerov took over the ministry from his predecessor, Aleksey Reznikov.

Daragan served as Umerov’s deputy when he headed Ukraine’s State Assets Agency, and moved to the Defense Ministry with her boss.
In addition to personnel changes, Umerov announced reforms in the state-owned company responsible for international arms trade and the ministry’s departments for logistics and procurement.
The overhaul comes amid rumors of growing tensions between Yermak and senior military officials, including Umerov and Kirill Budanov, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence. The speculation was triggered by last week’s firing of two of Budanov’s deputies, which Umerov reportedly ordered without consulting with the spy chief.
Reznikov resigned as Ukrainian defense minister after a failed attempt to make territorial gains on the battlefield during last year’s ‘counteroffensive’ against Russia. His departure also followed a series of corruption scandals in the ministry.

Last week, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky traveled to the US to promote his so-called ‘victory plan’ against Russia. The proposal reportedly left the American leadership unimpressed, with no major policy changes announced. Zelensky’s aims are said to have included seeking “Trump-proof” military assistance, NATO-type security guarantees, and permission to strike targets deep inside Russia with Western-supplied long-range weapons.

Russia has captured Vuhlhedar, officially. Raised the flag in the centre of the town.

It wasn't so long ago now that Kangal was citing Zeihan on this, who described it as more or less impossible to take. An "Impregnable fortress".

Vuhledar is elevated and sits on the junction of East/West fronts. Ukraine will no longer be able to use this position to shell Russian restocking convoys in the region. It is quite a significant gain.

A Ukrainian army grouping defending the town of Ugledar in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) has said that high command has allowed its troops to abandon the stronghold amid increasing Russian pressure.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has not officially confirmed the capture of the important settlement, located in southwestern DPR.
Set on a hill in an open area and consisting almost exclusively of high-rise concrete buildings, Ugledar had been turned into a major fortress by the Ukrainian military. Fighting for the stronghold had been ongoing for months but in recent weeks Russian forces intensified their attacks, with reports emerging of them taking control of parts of the town.
On Wednesday, the Ukrainian military’s Khortitsa task force issued a statement on its Telegram channel revealing that “the higher command has given permission to carry out a maneuver of withdrawal of units from Ugledar.”
The move is intended “to preserve personnel and combat equipment” for further combat actions, Khortitsa explained.

According to the group, the Ukrainian units in Ugledar became “exhausted” by Russian attacks on their flanks. “There was a threat of the encirclement of the town,” it said.
Earlier in the day, a security source told TASS news agency that Russian forces have almost completed their “mopping up” operation in the town. Some of Kiev’s units there suffered “huge losses” after not getting out of Ugledar in time, the source added.
Also on Wednesday, an aide to the head of the DPR told RIA Novosti that a Russian flag had been raised above Ugledar’s administrative building. Yan Gagin also stressed, however, that it was too early to talk about Moscow’s forces being in full control of the town.
The Russian Defense Ministry did not mention Ugledar in its daily bulletin. It did report the capture of Verkhnekamenskoye village in the northeast of Donetsk People’s Republic. The settlement sits five kilometers (around 2.5 miles) east of the town of Seversk, an important Ukrainian stronghold and logistics hub in the area. Kiev’s forces have lost up to 2,120 service personnel across the front line over the past 24 hours, the ministry has estimated.

Ukrainian deputy defense minister lashes out at ‘infantile’ West

Aleksandr Balanutsa has chided Kiev’s backers for not letting his country use their missiles to attack targets deep inside Russia
Ukrainian deputy defense minister lashes out at ‘infantile’ West

Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense for European Integration Aleksandr Balanutsa has called out Kiev’s “infantile” backers over their failure to allow it to use Western-supplied missiles to attack targets deep inside Russia. He warned that unless his country succeeds, NATO member states on the bloc’s eastern flank will be in Moscow’s crosshairs.
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has for months been asking his Western partners for permission to use US-made ATACMS, British Storm Shadows, and French SCALP missiles to target internationally recognized Russian territory. London and Paris have indicated that they are prepared to give the green light, but only if Washington does so first.
The White House apparently remains skeptical about the idea, concerned over a potential escalation of the Ukraine conflict.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that such a decision would directly involve Western nations in the hostilities, as the Ukrainian military is not capable of operating these sophisticated missiles on its own.
Speaking during a panel discussion at the Warsaw Security Forum on Wednesday, Balanutsa lamented “sometimes I think that the collective West, to some extent, is really full of infantilization and ideas. Do we have to even ask the question ‘can Ukraine [have] the right to do this or that?’”
He went on to predict that unless Ukraine is given all the necessary means to stop Russia now, Moscow will set its sights on the Baltic states, Poland and Moldova.

“So, what I’m asking is a nice commercial offer: ‘You give me the guns, you give me the weapons, I’ll do the job’… and you will continue having your safe life,” the deputy minister said.
“We are not infants in Ukraine, and I’m asking my partners also to wake up and grow up a little bit,” Balanutsa implored.
The official also argued that the Ukrainian military’s fighting standards now far exceed those of NATO, meaning that the US-led military bloc needs Kiev more than Kiev needs NATO.
In the wake of Zelensky’s visit to the US late last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that President Joe Biden’s administration had not acquiesced to his “victory plan,” that includes long-range strikes on internationally recognized Russian territory.
Meanwhile, in late September, President Putin proposed that the national nuclear doctrine be updated to stipulate that “aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state” shall be regarded as a “joint attack” and therefore warrant nuclear retaliation.

A retired US Marine who served in Ukraine’s notorious nationalist Azov Battalion has been revealed as among the participants in the new season of Netflix reality dating show ‘Love is Blind’.
The streaming giant published the first six episodes of the seventh season of the franchise on Wednesday. The show’s premise involves single men and women deciding whether to commit to marriage with a chosen partner before seeing him or her in person.
Among the participants is Bohdan Olinares, introduced as a “proud immigrant and Ukrainian refugee” grateful to be living “the American dream.” He is looking for a partner who can “embrace his history and unique upbringing.”
“The former Marine was previously married for five years, which he considers the craziest thing he’s done for love,”
according to the description. “Since then, Bohdan has become crystal clear about what he’s searching for thanks to the power of time and therapy.”
Olinares, 36, was interviewed last year by the US state-funded news outlet Voice of America (VOA) which reported how he had traveled back to Ukraine and joined the Azov Battalion – the notorious unit that originated as a neo-Nazi organization with extensive ties to far-right movements around the world.

He originally left Ukraine at the age of two with his parents. Days after the hostilities with Russia started in February 2022, Olinares contacted the Ukrainian Embassy and offered his services. In VOA footage, a patch of the Azov special operations branch can be seen among his memorabilia.
According to his former employer, the Virginia-based IT firm F5, the US military veteran spent six months in Ukraine. Its account of the tour says Olinares returned because Azov “had more than tripled in size” and had enough people willing to fight Russia.
Footage available online shows Olinares traveling with fellow Azov members, joking about his prowess as a lover interested in Ukrainian women.

Members of the Ukrainian unit have been implicated in multiple atrocities both before and after the conflict with Russia escalated into major hostilities. It has tried to rebrand itself as the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian armed forces, claiming it has left behind its neo-Nazi origins. Former and current Western officials have been helping the unit whitewash its reputation.
Russia considers Azov a terrorist organization whose members are fascists.

The US and its allies are delaying deliveries of weapons to Kiev and aren’t yet willing to act as Ukraine’s air defense, Vladimir Zelensky has claimed.
On Thursday, Zelensky met with the new NATO secretary-general, Mark Rutte, who hastened to Kiev just two days after taking over the US-led military bloc's top job.
“We will continue to convince our partners of the need to shoot down Russian missiles and drones,”Zelensky told reporters, noting that “they are not ready yet.”
Kiev has been trying to get NATO countries to extend their air defense envelopes into Ukrainian territory for months, arguing that the missile systems donated by the West can’t cope with the incoming Russian barrages.
Ukraine signed a security pact with Poland with that provision in July, only for Warsaw to backtrack, citing the need for consultations with NATO.
At a press conference with Rutte, Zelensky insisted that Ukraine needs “a sufficient quantity and quality of weapons” in order to turn the tide on the battlefield, “including long-range weapons, the provision of which, in my opinion, is being delayed by our partners.”
Rutte said that he chose Kiev as his first destination “to make crystal-clear to you, to the people of Ukraine and to everyone watching, that NATO stands with Ukraine.”

The former Dutch PM told Zelensky it was his “priority and privilege” to support Kiev and work “to ensure that Ukraine prevails.”He also said that “the day will come that Ukraine is a full member of NATO,” insisting that on that issue, Russia “has no vote and no veto.”
Rutte sidestepped questions about air defenses and restrictions on use of Western long-range weapons, however, noting that this is not for NATO to decide, but for individual members of the bloc.
“Shooting down drones or missiles violating Allied territory are, of course, decisions for the national authorities,” Rutte said, but because this also affects NATO, the member states are “continuing to consult closely when these situations arise.”
As for restrictions on the use of weapons delivered to Ukraine, “that’s up for each ally to decide,”and “not for NATO,” Rutte said, but the bloc intends to discuss the issue at its October 12 meeting.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that the issue was not about allowing Ukraine this or that, but about the fact that long-range weapons can’t be used without direct involvement of Western militaries.
“This will mean that NATO countries, the US, European countries are fighting against Russia,” Putin said at the time. This would change the very nature of the Ukraine conflict and require Russia to “make the appropriate decisions.”

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Berlin to protest against arms deliveries to Ukraine and Israel, while expressing concern about a possible nuclear escalation, according to local media and videos posted on social media.
The rally, organized by various pro-peace and left-wing groups, began on Thursday, coinciding with German Unity Day, which marks the unification of West Germany and communist East Germany in 1990.
Protesters carried banners with the messages “Peace,” “Never again war”, and “Diplomats instead of grenades,” with some messages expressing solidarity with the Palestinians, and calling for an “end to the occupation terror,” in an apparent reference to Israel’s ground operation in Gaza.
Several demonstrators were seen carrying Russian and Palestinian flags. One banner featured a Russian, Ukrainian and German flag with the word “friendship” underneath, while another denounced Olaf Scholz as the “Bomb chancellor”.

Organizers have claimed more than 40,000 people took part, while police have said it was “in the low five figure range,” according to Deutsche Welle. Law enforcement said the protests passed without major incidents.

Left-wing firebrand Sahra Wagenknecht, who leads her own recently formed Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) party, was among the high-profile attendees. Addressing the crowd, she stressed the need for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to resolve the Ukraine conflict. “I find it so annoying when people always come at us with their big morals saying you can’t talk to Putin for moral reasons,” she said.
Wagenknecht went on to blast the German government for following the US lead on foreign policy, and warned against the deployment of American intermediate-range missiles in the country.
She also addressed the Israel-Hamas war, saying: “anyone who remains silent about the terrible war crimes in Gaza… don’t tell me that you are moral. This is hypocrisy. This terrible war must also be finally put to an end.”
Germany has emerged as one of the biggest donors to Ukraine, sending tanks, air defense and artillery systems as well as other weapons to Kiev. Russia has repeatedly denounced those shipments, saying they only prolong the conflict.
Berlin also exports a significant amount of war materiel to Israel. Last month, several media outlets reported that German arms exports had been curtailed over concerns that they could violate humanitarian law.

Zelensky preparing new purge of top officials – media

Spy chief Kirill Budanov and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov may soon be sacked

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has become increasingly displeased with the work of military intelligence head Kirill Budanov and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and could replace them in the coming weeks, several outlets in Kiev have said.
Forbes Ukraine was the first to report the rumors, citing an official inside the presidential cabinet and two lawmakers on the defense committee of the Verkhovna Rada. As the main reason for the proposed personnel changes, they listed the “growing challenges at the front.”
Discussions about Budanov’s sacking have been going on for at least a month, according to Forbes’s sources. The head of the military intelligence service HUR reportedly has “strained relations” with Zelensky’s chief of staff Andrey Yermak and General Aleksandr Syrsky, the supreme commander of the Ukrainian armed forces.
Budanov has allegedly carried out some operations on his own, without informing Syrsky or coordinating with the General Staff, which has endangered some units at the front. Zelensky was also said to be unhappy with several failed HUR operations, though the sources did not specify which ones.

Yermak, who several Ukrainians have described to Western media as the real power in Kiev, appears not to like Budanov. His sentiment is shared by others in Kiev “who have pull with the media and the support of partners,” according to Forbes. Yermak has reportedly accused the HUR chief of spreading defeatism by discussing terms on which the conflict with Russia might end.
Umerov was appointed in September last year to replace Aleksey Reznikov. According to the Ukrainian media, he has not delivered on the reforms Zelensky has demanded regarding military procurement and modernization, or ensured stability inside the ministry.
While the firings might not be imminent, the issue is reportedly becoming “increasingly urgent.” Earlier this week, Russian forces liberated the town of Ugledar in the south of the Donetsk People’s Republic, which Ukraine had turned into a fortification that anchored a significant portion of the front line.
Russian troops have also advanced in every theater, while the Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region has failed to achieve any of the objectives Syrsky stated publicly.

Kiev may have to accept loss of territory – Stoltenberg

Ukraine could end up sacrificing land in order to end the conflict with Russia, the former NATO chief has said

Ukraine may have to recognize the loss of some of its territory to Russia in order to achieve peace and security guarantees, Jens Stoltenberg said in his first long interview after stepping down as NATO secretary-general.
Stoltenberg ended his ten-year tenure as the chief of the US-led alliance on October 1. In a conversation with the Financial Times published on Friday, he said that Kiev may be forced to rethink seeing the restoration of the 1991 borders as a prerequisite for any peace deal.
Stoltenberg suggested that “a kind of new momentum” would come after the US presidential election in early November, possibly ushering in “ways to try to get movement on the battlefield combined with movement around the negotiating table.”
The West should “make the conditions” that would enable Ukraine to “sit down with the Russians and get something which is acceptable... something where they survive as an independent nation.”
Asked what he would propose to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, the former NATO chief offered a comparison to the resolution of the Soviet-Finnish war nearly 85 years ago.

“Finland fought a brave war against the Soviet Union in ‘39. They imposed much bigger costs on the Red Army than expected,”he said. “The war ended with them giving up 10% of the territory. But they got a secure border.”
Under the March 1940 treaty, Finland ceded a large portion of the Karelia region and Viipuri, its second-largest city at the time (known as Vyborg in Russia).
Stoltenberg argued that Ukraine could obtain security guarantees from NATO even “if there is a line that is not necessarily the internationally recognized border.”He noted that the US defense pact with Japan does not cover Tokyo’s claim on the Kuril Islands, which are part of Russia, and that West Germany was admitted to NATO despite the fact that East Germany was controlled at the time by a separate, Soviet-aligned government.

“When there is a will, there are ways to find the solution. But you need a line which defines where Article 5 is invoked, and Ukraine has to control all the territory until that border,” Stoltenberg said, referring to the section of the NATO treaty, which outlines the duty of member states to defend each other.
Russia has said that it would not accept Zelensky’s ten-point ‘peace formula’ and not relinquish control over Crimea and four other regions, which Kiev and its backers continue to view as Ukrainian territory under illegal occupation.
Kiev’s hopes of imposing its terms appear more distant after the failed 2023 counteroffensive and Russia’s new victories in Donbass, where Moscow’s troops have been making steady progress throughout 2024. During its renewed advances, the Russian Army pushed the Ukrainians out of several heavily fortified towns, including Avdeevka, which fell in February, and Ugledar, which was captured earlier this week.

Unexpected effects from sanctions
This economic progress, partially caused by the West’s confrontational policy, has undermined the anti-Putin sentiments in the country much more than any other factor. To date, it outweighs the curtailing of political liberties in the country in recent years — since those liberties are claimed by few, and the economic prosperity is felt by all.

The West’s attempt to undermine Russia economically since 2022 has thus produced an opposite result — at least so far.

Zelensky rules out ‘bargaining’ with Russia

Media reports earlier suggested that the West might tacitly agree to Moscow controlling some of Ukraine’s former territories

Kiev has no plans to cede any territories to achieve peace in the conflict with Russia, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has said, following media reports that the West is considering a settlement with Moscow in which it retains “de-facto” control over some areas formerly controlled by Kiev.
In a video address on Saturday, the Zelensky announced that Ukrainian officials would discuss Kiev’s so-called ‘victory plan’ with Western backers next week, claiming it would help strengthen the country, especially in the military sphere.
Kiev has yet to release the much-hyped roadmap to the public, though it has promised to do so, at least with regard to the essential points. Several media reports, however, claim that the plan includes NATO-like Western security guarantees for Ukraine, the continuation of Kiev’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region to serve as a territorial bargaining chip, deliveries of “specific” Western-made advanced weapons, and international financial aid for Ukraine.

The plan was presented by Zelensky in the US last month, and was reportedly met with skepticism by officials who suggested that it contains no “real surprises” and largely amounts to a “wish list,” according to Bloomberg.
Discussions with Kiev’s Western backers will enable it to move closer to ending the conflict in line with Zelensky’s ‘peace formula’, the Ukrainian leader said, referring to his plan which demands that Russia withdraw troops from territories claimed by Ukraine. This has been rejected by Moscow as a non-starter for talks.
“This is our goal – to guarantee Ukraine reliable peace and security. This is possible only based on international law and without any bargaining over sovereignty or trading territories,” he stated.
His remarks come after the Financial Times reported that Western diplomats and some Ukrainian officials “have come round to the view that meaningful security guarantees could form the basis of a negotiated settlement in which Russia retains de facto, but not de jure, control of all or part of the Ukrainian territory.”
The outlet noted that this approach implies “tacit acceptance that those lands should be regained through diplomatic means in the future,” adding, however, that this remains a “taboo” for Kiev, at least in public.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow is ready to immediately declare a ceasefire and start peace negotiations as soon as Ukraine starts withdrawing troops from the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye. In August, however, he ruled out any engagement with Kiev as long as Ukrainian troops are occupying parts of Kursk Region.

Ukraine and West have no intention of peace – Lavrov

Moscow is open to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, but Washington and NATO want the hostilities to go on, the foreign minister has said

Russia would agree to a diplomatic settlement of the Ukraine conflict that would resolve its root causes, but neither Kiev nor its Western backers appear open to such a resolution, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Newsweek magazine published on Monday.
According to the diplomat, Moscow would prefer to end the conflict once and for all rather than merely achieve a ceasefire. For this, Lavrov stressed that the West must stop supplying weapons to Ukraine and Kiev should end its hostilities and return to a “neutral, non-bloc and non-nuclear status, protect the Russian language, and respect the rights and freedoms of its citizens.”
Lavrov suggested that the Istanbul agreements, which were nearly approved by the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in March 2022, could serve as the basis for such a settlement, as they provide for Kiev’s formal abstention from joining NATO, as well as security guarantees for Ukraine while recognizing “the realities on the ground at the moment.”
The minister also recalled that in June, Russian President Vladimir Putin also listed the prerequisites for a peace settlement with Ukraine, to which Kiev responded by launching an armed incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region. Meanwhile, the US and other NATO countries have openly stated their desire to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Russia.

“Under the circumstances, we have no choice but to continue our special military operation until the threats posed by Ukraine are removed,” Lavrov said, noting that the greatest cost in this conflict is being paid by the Ukrainians who are being “ruthlessly pushed by their own authorities to the war to be slaughtered there.”
The foreign minister added that while Russia has been trying to resolve the crisis around Ukraine for more than a decade, its efforts have repeatedly been undermined by Kiev and the West. Lavrov pointed to the US-backed Maidan coup in 2014, the UN-endorsed Minsk Agreements, which Ukraine, Germany, and France openly bragged about never intending to adhere to, and the Istanbul peace agreement in March 2022 that Vladimir Zelensky ultimately refused to sign after pressure from then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
“At present, as far as we can see, restoring peace is not part of our adversary’s plan. Zelensky has not revoked his decree banning negotiations with Moscow. Washington and its NATO allies provide political, military and financial support to Kiev so that the war would go on,” Lavrov surmised, warning that “playing with fire” in this manner could lead to dangerous consequences.

Lithuania has confiscated five pairs of camouflage pants from a passenger train traveling from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to Moscow, the local authorities have said, promising to send them as aid to Kiev.
Officers from Kaunas Territorial Customs and the Customs Criminal Service discovered the pants in the mail carriage of a Kaliningrad-Moscow passenger train on October 2. The authorities “detected and detained a mail consignment containing possibly military items – camouflage trousers,” Lithuania’s Customs said in a statement published on Monday.
The garments fall under the EU Council sanctions against Russia as clothing specifically designed for camouflage, according to Vilnius.

In late September and early October, the local authorities confiscated several consignments of camouflage nets, also deemed military-use items, the statement added.
Customs officials consider these items to be “destined for Russian forces fighting against Ukraine”and “are usually sent by members of various voluntary organizations operating in the Russian Kaliningrad region.”
The five pairs of pants and other confiscated goods will now be sent to Ukraine as “assistance” from Lithuania.

Rail traffic from Kaliningrad to the rest of Russia must pass through Lithuania. Soon after the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, Vilnius announced that it would block the transit of goods that fall under EU sanctions on its territory.
The region’s governor, Anton Alikhanov, called Lithuania’s decision as an attempt to “strangle” the area. He said that 20-40% of the goods that once passed between Kaliningrad and Russia fell under the restrictions, including cement, metals, and other important building

Russia is wearing them down say by day.
And it is working. The gruesome truth about the Ukrainian casualty figures confirms that Zelensky is running out of men while, globally, surplus munition stocks have been used up. How the US will be able to prolong it forever, as it appears to want, is something that must be taxing the minds of the neocons daily.

This could have all been sorted within a month of Russia's special operation but that inbred scumbag Boris Johnson and his equally scummy boss Antony Blinken got involved and ensured it wasn't.
Like everything else just follow the money, it was never about Ukraine or it's citizens.
