Exactly. Its not as if Russia has been provoked into these attacks. It has always been attacking Ukraine with drones and missiles.

Whats interesting is that Russia has had to shift to naval launched cruise missiles from the Black Sea. Leaving for the moment the fact that it takes much longer to reload missiles on ships than it does on aircraft, we can be sure Ukraine has anticipated this to the extent we may now see more attacks on the Russian Navy there.

Still not stopping Ukraine from hitting selected targets in Russia anyway.

Russian officials have unveiled the identities of nearly 100 fallen Ukrainian soldiers who were among the more than 6,000 Moscow has offered to return to Kiev in a unilateral humanitarian gesture during the latest round of direct talks in Istanbul on Monday.
The governor of Russia’s Zaporozhye Region, Evgeny Balitsky, published the first six pages containing 97 names, identification documents, and places of death on Saturday evening, after Ukraine reportedly refused to receive the remains of thousands of its troops.
“We are beginning to publish lists of identified bodies so that relatives can find their dead,” he wrote. “We understand that Kiev has this data, but they are deliberately hiding it from the public.”
The Istanbul talks resulted in an agreement to exchange at least 1,000 prisoners on both sides, including critically ill and younger detainees. Russia also offered to return over 6,000 fallen Ukrainian soldiers for proper burial as part of a unilateral humanitarian initiative.

The first convoy, carrying the remains of 1,212 troops, arrived at the designated exchange point on Saturday – but the Ukrainian side failed to appear, according to Lieutenant General Alexander Zorin, a member of the Russian negotiating team.
“The Ukrainian side unexpectedly postponed both the acceptance of bodies and the exchange of prisoners of war for an indefinite period,” Zorin said.
Russia’s lead negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, confirmed that Kiev had been handed a list of 640 wounded and young prisoners but did not show up at the exchange site. “The reasons provided were various and rather strange,” he said, urging Kiev to “adhere strictly to the schedule and agreements” and ensure the dead receive a proper burial.
Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters has denied the accusations, claiming that both sides have been preparing for the prisoner and body exchanges. Ukrainian media later reported that the process had been postponed until next week, though no official new date has been confirmed.

Balitsky accused Kiev of deliberately obstructing the return of the bodies, alleging that Ukrainian authorities are trying to conceal the scale of their military losses and avoid paying compensation to the families of the dead.
“As long as a Ukrainian soldier is listed as missing, his family will not receive a single hryvnia in aid,” the governor said. “This is a calculated attempt to hide the losses and save money.”
The refusal to retrieve the bodies is part of a broader pattern of violations by Ukraine, Balitsky argued, claiming Kiev “does not even attempt to honor agreements.” He also blamed Western countries for “derailing peaceful resolution efforts” by continuing to arm Kiev and escalate the conflict.

For most people, June 1st is a cheerful date – the start of summer, a celebration of children. But from 2025 onward, it may also be remembered as the day Ukraine launched its largest covert operation in Russia since the start of the conflict.
While the full impact of the operation is still unclear, estimates suggest anywhere from a handful to several dozen Russian aircraft were damaged or destroyed. The precise details will likely remain shrouded in speculation.
What is certain, however, is that the Russian military must rethink how it defends strategic facilities. The traditional approach – based on intercepting missiles and deploying advanced air-defense systems – has proven inadequate against cheap drones that can be assembled from off-the-shelf parts and launched from almost anywhere. That lesson is now painfully clear. But the military will draw its own conclusions. Our focus should be on the political meaning of what happened.
Make no mistake – this was not just a military act. Like much of what Ukraine does, this was political theater, staged for a very specific audience: Donald Trump.
Kiev’s objective was simple. Derail the Istanbul negotiations and paint Russia as the intransigent party. How? By provoking a furious response – one that would make headlines, stir outrage inside Russia, and force Moscow to walk away from the table. The idea was to provoke a reaction that Ukraine could then parade before Washington. The message? “See? We told you they don’t want peace. Arm us more!”
It’s not the first time they’ve tried this tactic. From the attack on the Kursk Bridge to the shelling of Donbass civilians, Ukraine has repeatedly used provocation as a diplomatic weapon – seeking to engineer Russia’s diplomatic isolation by sabotaging any steps toward negotiation.

And yet, once again, it didn’t work.
Despite outrage from parts of Russian society, Moscow did not take the bait. Our delegation flew to Istanbul as planned. There, negotiators presented Ukraine with a memorandum reiterating the same terms previously offered. Not a step back. At the same time, humanitarian agreements were reached – including a new exchange of prisoners and the return of fallen fighters’ remains.
So did Russia “turn the other cheek”? Hardly. Moscow has adopted a strategy one might call an “Italian strike” – doing the bare minimum to deny our enemies a propaganda victory, while withholding the kind of breakthroughs that would reward bad-faith behavior.
Yes, the humanitarian measures agreed upon in Istanbul are important. But let’s not kid ourselves – they are not steps toward a peace settlement. Politically, the situation is unchanged. However, there is a deeper issue now at play – one with far more serious implications.
On June 1st, Ukrainian forces didn’t just target military bases. They targeted components of Russia’s nuclear deterrent. Under our official doctrine, an attack on the strategic nuclear infrastructure is grounds for the use of nuclear weapons.
Now, no one is suggesting we nuke Kiev over a few aircraft, no matter how advanced or expensive. That would be disproportionate. But here lies the paradox: If Russia does nothing, it risks undermining the credibility of its own deterrence posture, and that sends a dangerous message.
In the Western capitals and among Ukrainian hawks, there are already whispers: “If they didn’t respond to this, maybe they’ll tolerate even more.” That may sound absurd – but that’s how these people think. Their fantasies become policy more often than one would like.
So what is the answer?
Let’s be honest: repeating slogans like “our response will be success on the battlefield” won’t cut it here. Ukraine’s leadership isn’t acting out of military logic, but emotional desperation. Their calculation is political. So Russia’s response must be political, too – emotionally resonant, unmistakably firm, and, above all, cr strikes prove Moscow’s point
This doesn’t mean rash escalation, but we can’t rely on the old playbook. Hitting the same military targets again and again achieves little. Striking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure? Done. Launching another missile as a ‘demonstration’? Predictable. Escalating to mass casualties? Unnecessary and, frankly, counterproductive.
So what’s left?
Innovation.
Russia must now think asymmetrically. That might mean a covert action so unexpected that it catches Ukraine completely off guard. Or it could involve striking symbolic targets that shift the psychological balance. The key is to remind Kiev – and its patrons – that nothing they do goes unanswered, and that the cost of provocation will always outweigh the benefit.
In truth, Russia has spent too long responding conventionally to a conflict that is anything but conventional. Our adversaries deal in optics, symbols, and theater. To counter that effectively, we must speak the same language – without abandoning our principles or resorting to theatrics of our own.
The June 1st attack was not a turning point. But it was a warning. Not just about drones or airfields, but about perception and power. The next move, as always, is Russia’s to make.
And this time, it must be something they don’t expect.

The Russian military has reportedly destroyed the majority of US-supplied M1 Abrams tanks delivered to Ukraine, with only five of them remaining operational, RIA Novosti has reported, citing its own analysis.
In January 2023, then US President Joe Biden announced the transfer of 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, with delivery of the armor completed in September that same year. Since then, Moscow has consistently targeted the vehicles and has shared numerous video clips purporting to show the destruction or capture of the US tanks. In May 2024, one of the seized vehicles was displayed at the Army-2024 military expo in Moscow, along with other Western-supplied hardware.
According to RIA’s estimates, the Russian military has destroyed a total of 26 Abrams tanks since February 2024, leaving Ukraine’s forces with just five out of 31 of the American vehicles. The first Abrams was reportedly knocked out on February 26 by the Russian ‘Center’ military group near Avdeevka.
RIA’s latest estimates follow a report from The New York Times in March, which cited Ukrainian officials confirming that 19 of the 31 Abrams tanks had already been destroyed or damaged. The newspaper added that the remaining vehicles have been withdrawn from frontline service due to their vulnerability to Russian drone and artillery attacks.

Oryx, a Dutch analyst group which tracks visually confirmed equipment losses, has also claimed that as of late 2024, Ukraine had lost at least 22 Abrams tanks.
Last week, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that two Ukrainian Abrams tanks had been seized during an operation in Ukraine’s Sumy Region. The Defense Ministry released a video showing Russian troops recovering the vehicles, which appeared to be intact. The tanks were reportedly towed to the rear by the 22nd Motor Rifle Regiment after reconnaissance teams secured the area.
After Biden’s initial announcement of Abrams deliveries to Ukraine, multiple US media outlets hailed the tanks as a “game changer” for Kiev, particularly ahead of its failed counteroffensive in 2023. However, by September of that year, Ukraine’s top military spy Kirill Budanov admitted that the tanks were unlikely to survive on the battlefield for long. Former US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan later also acknowledged that the Abrams was “not useful” for Ukraine.
Moscow has repeatedly criticized Western arms deliveries to Kiev, saying they only prolong hostilities and lead to more bloodshed without affecting the inevitable outcome.

This once again raises the fundamental question facing the war hawks in the EU, how do you go about constructing a modern army. Tanks and armoured vehicles (one wonders about the fate of the much vaunted Bradleys) are no longer the mainstay of any ground force, so what is to be done instead?

Air forces must also reconsider their role, Top Gun type heroes may have no place in future warfare, gamers fed endless boxes of pizzas sat in front of screens far from any danger or action is the way it is going to be.

Dreams of reviewing tank parades from lofty podiums may well hit Fond of Lying's G spot but all that has changed with Ukraine.

Russia’s exports have grown considerably, compared to figures recorded prior to the escalation of the Ukraine conflict and despite sweeping Western sanctions, the German Economic Institute has reported.
Back in 2022, the US, the EU, the UK, Canada, Japan and several other nations imposed massive sanctions on Russia, targeting its financial institutions, trade, and energy exports. Moscow has consistently described the punitive measures as illegitimate and counterproductive.
In a report published on Friday, the German Economic Institute stated that “despite all European efforts, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s war chest is not emptying.” The document suggested that Moscow is “skillfully exploiting the loopholes in the sanctions regime to expand its financial resources.”
This is evidenced by an 18% increase in Russia’s exports to its top 20 trade partners last year, compared to 2021, the Institute’s experts wrote, estimating that the growth translated to 330 billion dollars’ worth of goods.
“The preliminary data for 2025 also shows that little has changed in this regard,” the report noted.

According to the analysis, China, India, Türkiye and Brazil are the main importers of Russian goods, consisting mainly of oil, gas, and other raw materials. Moscow has shifted its trade focus to the Global South, but according to the report, Hungary and Slovakia remain among “Russia’s most important trading partners” in the EU.
US Senator Lindsey Graham has been spearheading a bill calling for 500% secondary tariffs on imports from countries buying Russian oil and gas. Analysts at the German Economic Institute doubt US President Donald Trump will back the measure. The report also questions whether such tariffs are even technically feasible.
On Wednesday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned lawmakers that the imposition of such high tariffs could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking late last month at a meeting with business leaders, Russian President Putin hailed the country’s impressive economic performance across an array of sectors, despite operating in what he described as “far from favorable and rather difficult conditions.”
The official also cited the International Monetary Fund’s ratings, according to which, Russia is in fourth place globally by purchasing power parity (PPP).
The macroeconomic analysis metric compares economic productivity and living standards between countries by adjusting for differences in the cost of goods and services.

The European Commission has proposed phasing out all remaining Russian gas imports to the EU by the end of 2027.
Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen unveiled the plan which would ban new gas contracts with Russia from 2026 and “full phaseout” a year later, on Tuesday, after it was approved by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The controversial legislation, which is opposed by Hungry, Austria and Slovakia, and reportedly by Italy, is expected to be proposed as trade law that does not require unanimity among bloc members to become law, the Financial Times has reported.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the plan “absolute insanity,” warning it could fuel price hikes and undermine national sovereignty. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has vowed to block the move.
”Today, we have decided to close the tap on Russian gas,” Jorgensen said in Strasbourg, “because the less energy we import from Russia, the more security and independence we will have in Europe.”
Jorgensen told reporters the phaseout was not linked to the Ukraine conflict but rather because “Russia has weaponized energy” against the EU. He added: “Irrespectively of whether there is a peace or not … this ban will still stand.”

The proposed regulation will now move through the EU’s co-decision legislative process, requiring approval from both the European Parliament and the Council. Unlike sanctions, the proposal would not need unanimous backing from all member states – only a qualified majority in the Council, the Commission said, noting it would continue “working closely” with governments most affected by the planned phaseout.
A reinforced majority means having the support of at least 15 of the EU’s 27 member countries, representing at least 65% of the EU’s population, according to Reuters.
“Nobody will be able to veto [the proposal],” Jorgensen said, as quoted by media outlets. He warned that those who do not implement the measures would face “legal consequences as for any other EU legislation.”
While pipeline flows have dropped sharply since 2022, EU imports of Russian LNG have soared. Russia supplied 17.5% of the bloc’s LNG in 2024, trailing only the US at 45.3%, according to industry data. France, Spain, and Belgium accounted for 85% of the EU’s LNG imports from the sanctioned country, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
Russia maintains that it is still a reliable supplier, while denouncing Western sanctions and trade restrictions targeting its exports as illegal under international law. The country has successfully shifted exports to ‘friendly’ markets, it added.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has called on Western donors to commit $40 billion annually to prop up his country’s budget, following a high-profile snub by US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit.
Zelensky made the appeal Tuesday during the gathering in Kananaskis, Canada, at which he failed to get an audience with Trump, who left early.
Posting a photo on social media of himself speaking to six leaders, Zelensky demanded sustained donations. “It’s crucial to have $40 billion annually in budgetary support for Ukraine — to ensure our resilience and the ability of our country to carry on,” he said, urging the US to approve the aid.
Trump “does not apply strong enough pressure on Russia,” Zelensky claimed, despite Kiev purportedly defending Washington’s global interests. He called on other G7 members to lobby the US leader, while advocating investment in Ukraine’s arms production and new sanctions against Russia.

The summit’s results have been reported as a disappointment for Kiev and have cast doubt on the prospects of. Trump-Zelensky meeting at a NATO leaders summit scheduled for next Tuesday.
”It is a permanent hazard that Ukraine is a victim of events and Trump’s short attention span,” a Ukrainian official told The Guardian. “There had been all sorts of promises for this summit – including new US arms deliveries being offered.”
G7 leaders did not issue a joint statement on Ukraine, reportedly due to Trump’s refusal to endorse language critical of Russia. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Chair summary noted that participants supported Trump’s efforts to broker a “just and lasting peace in Ukraine” and backed Kiev’s call for an unconditional ceasefire.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has called on Western donors to commit $40 billion annually to prop up his country’s budget, following a high-profile snub by US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit.
Zelensky made the appeal Tuesday during the gathering in Kananaskis, Canada, at which he failed to get an audience with Trump, who left early.
Posting a photo on social media of himself speaking to six leaders, Zelensky demanded sustained donations. “It’s crucial to have $40 billion annually in budgetary support for Ukraine — to ensure our resilience and the ability of our country to carry on,” he said, urging the US to approve the aid.
Trump “does not apply strong enough pressure on Russia,” Zelensky claimed, despite Kiev purportedly defending Washington’s global interests. He called on other G7 members to lobby the US leader, while advocating investment in Ukraine’s arms production and new sanctions against Russia.

The summit’s results have been reported as a disappointment for Kiev and have cast doubt on the prospects of. Trump-Zelensky meeting at a NATO leaders summit scheduled for next Tuesday.
”It is a permanent hazard that Ukraine is a victim of events and Trump’s short attention span,” a Ukrainian official told The Guardian. “There had been all sorts of promises for this summit – including new US arms deliveries being offered.”
G7 leaders did not issue a joint statement on Ukraine, reportedly due to Trump’s refusal to endorse language critical of Russia. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Chair summary noted that participants supported Trump’s efforts to broker a “just and lasting peace in Ukraine” and backed Kiev’s call for an unconditional ceasefire.

Officials in Brussels are completely undermining the EU’s competitiveness, according to Kirill Dmitriev, the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and presidential envoy. His comment follows the European Commission’s proposal to eliminate all Russian oil and gas imports within two years.
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen unveiled the plan, which is backed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, on Tuesday. It seeks to ban all new gas contracts with Russia, and presents measures to facilitate the end of Russian oil imports by the end of 2027.
“EU Commission bureaucrats seem obsessed – with making the EU as uncompetitive as possible on the global stage,” Dmitriev, who is also the Russian president’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation, wrote on X. “Mission accomplished or still in progress?”
The comment came in response to criticism from Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who warned that the plan represents “a serious violation” of Hungary’s sovereignty. He claimed that the EU is “ready to dismantle Hungary’s secure and affordable energy supply.”

The legislation seeks to apply EU trade law mechanisms to imports of Russian oil and gas, enabling Brussels to bypass potential vetoes from countries such as Hungary and Slovakia.
Energy prices across Europe soared following Ukraine-related sanctions in 2022. Jorgensen said the latest phaseout is not about Ukraine, but because “Russia has weaponized energy” against the EU.

EU bosses back total Russian gas ban

Moscow has called the sanctions illegitimate and counterproductive. Russian President Vladimir Putin has set the lifting of sanctions as a condition for resolving the Ukraine conflict. The Kremlin also noted that Russia has been a reliable energy supplier to the bloc.
Russia, once the EU’s main gas supplier, sharply reduced exports three years ago amid Western sanctions and the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. Its share of EU pipeline gas fell from over 40% in 2021 to around 11% in 2024. While most EU countries have cut Russian gas, landlocked members, including Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Serbia, still rely on limited supplies through various exemptions.
Meanwhile, Russian LNG imports to the EU have surged, making up 17.5% of the bloc’s supply last year – second only to the US at 45.3%. France, Spain, and Belgium took in 85% of these shipments, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

Russia and Burkina Faso have formalized a deal to expand peaceful nuclear energy cooperation, including joint projects in radiation technologies and the training of specialists from the West African country.
The agreement was signed on Thursday by Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, and Burkina Faso’s Energy Minister Yacouba Zabré Gouba on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
“The signing of this Agreement marks an important milestone in strengthening the partnership between Russia and Burkina Faso,” Likhachev stated, according to a Rosatom press release.
“We are ready to provide advanced technologies and expert support to implement joint projects aimed at sustainable development and enhancing the region’s energy security,” he added.
According to the statement, the new pact builds on a roadmap signed in March last year between Rosatom and Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Energy during the ATOMEXPO forum in Sochi.

Key areas of cooperation outlined in the document include the development of Burkina Faso’s nuclear infrastructure in line with international standards, regulation of nuclear and radiation safety, and the use of radioisotopes in industry, medicine, and agriculture.
Moscow and Ouagadougou have been engaged in nuclear cooperation since 2023, following a request by Burkina Faso’s interim leader, Ibrahim Traore, to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the second Russia–Africa Summit in St. Petersburg.

Last year, Rosatom representatives visited Burkina Faso to discuss plans for constructing a nuclear power plant in one of the world’s least electrified countries. The Sahel state had earlier signed an agreement with the Russian firm in October 2024 to build the facility.
NovaWind – the wind energy division of Rosatom – is also working with the government of neighboring Mali to build a 200-megawatt (MW) solar power plant near the capital, Bamako. Last year, NovaWind’s director, Grigory Nazarov, said the $217 million facility would boost the country’s electricity production by 10%.
Apart from striking its latest deal on peaceful nuclear cooperation with Burkina Faso, Moscow also announced last week the approval of similar agreements with Mali, which have yet to be formalized.

On Friday, during the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), moderated by Koteich, Putin stated that Moscow is not seeking the surrender of Ukraine. “We insist on the recognition of the realities that have developed on the ground,” he added.
After the session, he gave an interview to Sky News Arabia in which he reiterated that Kiev should respect the will of the people who voted to join Russia.

During a Q&A session on Friday, Putin said that negotiations held in Istanbul in early 2022, shortly after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, fell apart under pressure from “neocolonial forces.”
Earlier in June, top Russian negotiator and presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky told RT’s Rick Sanchez that Ukraine had a chance to secure a deal on more favorable terms had it not withdrawn from negotiations in 2022. According to Medinsky, Kiev opted to walk away after consulting with the US and UK.
