So you equate ‘citizenship’ with switching your nationality?

If that’s the case, then all the Indians that work in my company that came over here a few years ago are now Irish by your reasoning. The citizenship ceremony in Kerry must have magical properties.

So everyone, as you can see from his post above… @Haven thinks that it takes 5 years for an Indian, Nigerian or Mongolian to become Irish.

Let's deal with the first part, imagine a flight, destined for some far-flung place has to make an emergency landing in Dublin, because a Nigerian woman is giving birth and there's complications.. and so the child is born on the tarmac of the runway at Dublin airport. Obviously that wouldn't make the baby Irish, that would be magic dirt theory, agreed?

‘American’ is a catch all term for immigrants or descendants of immigrants from all over the world. It’s an artificial collective which is why it’s always preceded by the country or region of origin. It’s not a pure ancestral defining term.
