General Chat in The Marcus Lounge.

While Mr O'Toole had not been abused by Gibney, he approached other swimmers to see if they had been and the web started to unravel with others saying they too had been abused.

Interesting. Seems this was a society wide problem - and not something unique to the Catholic Church; something those of us with a braincell knew already.

Isn't it astonishing that the media - who have a responsibility not to stir brainless mobs - have used their platform to incite against a group of individuals to the exclusion of all others, all while dispensing with protections such as the presumption of innocence, fair procedures, due process and the right to a fair trial.

And as we know, this has real life consequences for individuals.

The (now deceased) Phoneix magazine used to highlight the fact that the Irish Times would only ever focus on abuse within the Catholic Church, and practically ignore the abuse in the church of Ireland etc, would seem the Irish Times at least, had it in for the Catholic Church.

First, you're talking about RTE.

Second they libelled him by wrongly accusing him of having a normal adult relationship with a woman, and fathering a child while a missionary in Africa in the 1980s, not of molesting little boys.

Third, the context is not alone the little boys abused by these priests, but how bishops and Irish government covered up 'endemic' and 'ritualised' abuse of thousands of children - your precious priests and nuns terrorising boys and girls in the workhouse-style schools and elsewhere with sexual, physical and mental abuse.

Fourth, the Irish Catholic Church was more interested in shielding its paedophile staff from arrest to protect their own reputations despite knowing they were serial attackers, and Irish government inspectors and Irish communities also were complicit in failing to act to stop the chronic beatings, rape and humiliation.

But all you're interested in is getting all offended that a priest was wrongly accused of having a normal healthy sexual relationship with a woman?

Well that says a lot.

Apologies I see it was actually a teenage girl. Well the rest of the post still stands. And RTE were always incompetent morons. Their pathological idiocy and institutionalised incompetence should not muddy the wider waters.

Yes, RTE. A media organisation, thicko.

You've missed the point, as usual, while also engaging in your usual strawmanning and mischaracterisation of people.

Let me put it simply so you and the other idiots in your brainless mob can understand. Abuse of children is/was a society-wide problem. The vast majority of abuse takes place in family homes. As we've seen from various media reports in the last few years abuse of children was widespread in many institutions, from churches, schools, charities, sporting organisations etc.

Now, that's the facts.

The problem with you and your mob is that you absolutely obsess over abuse in the Catholic church to the exclusion of all other abuse. And it's done for ideological reasons (similar to how you have to paint everything in Ireland's past as being dark and bleak and miserable), which is obvious to anyone with two brain cells.

The media have been even worse. Not only hounding individuals (often dead), and doing away with principles of due process, but also whipping up mass hysteria on the basis of lies (see Tuam and alleged historian Catherine Corless).

But I don't think there's any point tying to get through to you people. You've made your minds up.
