Hermit, maybe you should start a thread just on gravity, anti-gravity and levity? It would be good fun Newton and the apple is all very well, but he was a Rosicrucian bollox and it is prudent to take his stuff with a grain of organic sea salt, IMHO.

What happens to the helium released from all the balloons? I can understand that it is lighter than air, so obviously it will rise above the air, even with gravity.

Does that mean that there is a band of helium sitting on top of the air on the planet?

MAF, I think I can grasp the idea of the air/vacuum border zone being wide - lots of air molecules on the earth side, and very little on the space side.

What are the measurements on that? How far up is total vacuum, how far is just low density air?

It is precisely the border area where I can't grasp what's happening. Is it gravity that stops the air molecules in the border zone from spinning off into the vacuum?

Yes, they can and do. If they have escape velocity.

The same speed a rocket has to reach to be successfully sent into orbit, or the spaceship it was attached to.

If gravity is some sort of electrical charge, then it starts to make sense. The air molecules don't go into the vacuum because of the electrical charge that connects them to other air molecules below them.

The idea that gravity from the earth 100km below is enough to stop an air molecule heading for the vacuum nearby seems wrong.

It's all about overcoming Earth's gravity

I fail to understand what your gripe is with the world as it has been described by philosophers, mathematicians and scientists over the course of 2,000 years and more. Do you really believe it is one big conspiracy that has been carefully moulded to deprive you of something or other?

The second law of thermodynamics states that entropy, which is a measure of disorder, will always increase - order to disorder. Surely you would agree that building a sandcastle is the opposite - dísorder to order, however temporary? However, building the sandcastle requires energy, heat to be created and so there isn't a net decrease of entropy.

Speaking of the full picture, there's nothing wrong with the pictures of gas in a container that you've posted here. And I have no reason to believe that they were even made by a Flat Earther, however, I do think that they were handed to you by one and he said - "See Hermit? There have been many different descriptions of the world during that time period, which have also changed over time, e.g. from geocentrism to heliocentrism 400 years ago. Bendy spacetime gravity is only 100 years old. Their descriptions of the world are not automatically true because they all agree with each other (appeal to consensus) or because of whatever lofty, infallible status you want to ascribe to them.

Throwing the standard retorts around about wanting to feel special or whatever is a rather futile exercise as they are so wide of the mark, but let us take your comparison with covid and other scams such as global warming.

The science behind these purports to be genuine and based upon well established principles, when in fact it is not. Science is the pursuit of knowledge through debate and enquiry, the scams are about pushing an agenda through claiming that the science is settled, science is never settled, I would even allow that the earth could indeed be flat but, and it is a huge but, what we know about the earth being round etc, is based on thousands of years of debate and enquiry, not a day or two in Pfizers marketing department.

The global earth has been debated and argued against just as long as it has been argued for, not least by the church, but the global model has won out and by further enlarging it has brought mankind many benefits.

Something to bear in mind next time you use GPS.
