Hi all.
i spent yesterday in the company of retired military and was brought to Cathal Brugha barracks to the home of Michael Collins where he departed from to his death in Beal Na Blath .
that much is known .
there was a public discussion amongst people who had served approx 40 years each in the Irish army .
some in the Congo some in Somalia some elsewhere all experienced all trained to use arms .
everyone in the room including myself had fired the 303 and Bren and other weapons.
we all agreed that had a 303 round hit Collins it would have done huge damage as it would remove your entire shoulder or head and we were looking at Collins original death mask 2 ft from us all in a glass case almost unmarked apart from swelling under the right eye.
it emerged there was no post mortem on Collins however the coroner Oliver st john Gogarty was present and other doctors who listed the burn /powder marks on the side of the rear of Collins skull which showed he had been killed at very close quarters .
one person present had done considerable research into the subsequent wealth acquired by one of Collins comrades and the money came from British high sources and they formed the view that Churchill had him killed based on the evidence they turned up.
Dev ordered the barracks re named in a fit of spite /bitterness to Cathal Brugha barracks even though it was where which Collins had lived in the simple 2 story house had confined himself to two rooms on the barracks side away from the high wall where the IRA repeatedly climbed in order to kill him .

Maybe they plugged an holes with filler, for the face mask job ! !

He died anyway ~ ~ And Collins was told to keep driving through ( that is what we are told anyhow )

Collins should have left the decisions, on how to tackle an ambush, to those that were used to it i.e. Used to counter-acting ambushes and doing ambushes ! !

Its usually understood to be his new driver, who later lived in Dublin and worked as a bus driver for CIE, who killed him at close quarters and in full view of Emmet Dalton. Dalton I assume is the person you are referring to who acquired new wealth etc.

He deserved what was coming to him for selling out the Republic and then making war on its defenders.
I suggest the mistake they made ( easy for me in hind-sight was ) was that ~ ~ The signatories of the dodgy treaty should have said that ~ They would go back to Ireland and recommend that the treaty be agreed to, but that it was up to the Leaders in Ireland to say Yay or Nay ! ! ( so not actually signed the treaty themselves, maybe they needed a few slippery fellows in that delegation )

Maybe a technical manoeuvre, but it would have handed the responsibility to the Leaders in Dublin ( easy for me with the benefit of hindsight )

Well in a way they did that, they always said it was subject to the ratification of the Dail. And the Dail did ratify it.
True ~ ~ But pulling the manoeuvre I said, would made it more difficult for them to be blamed so much !

In hindsight the losing side in the Civil Was should have accepted the Dáil defeat and the result of the following General Election ( a sort of de-facto referendum on the Treaty ) ~ ~ and avoided the Civil War ~ ~ The Unionists and Big Island Brits must have Loved the Irish Civil War = = Mana from Heaven !
