Hi all.
i spent yesterday in the company of retired military and was brought to Cathal Brugha barracks to the home of Michael Collins where he departed from to his death in Beal Na Blath .
that much is known .
there was a public discussion amongst people who had served approx 40 years each in the Irish army .
some in the Congo some in Somalia some elsewhere all experienced all trained to use arms .
everyone in the room including myself had fired the 303 and Bren and other weapons.
we all agreed that had a 303 round hit Collins it would have done huge damage as it would remove your entire shoulder or head and we were looking at Collins original death mask 2 ft from us all in a glass case almost unmarked apart from swelling under the right eye.
it emerged there was no post mortem on Collins however the coroner Oliver st john Gogarty was present and other doctors who listed the burn /powder marks on the side of the rear of Collins skull which showed he had been killed at very close quarters .
one person present had done considerable research into the subsequent wealth acquired by one of Collins comrades and the money came from British high sources and they formed the view that Churchill had him killed based on the evidence they turned up.
Dev ordered the barracks re named in a fit of spite /bitterness to Cathal Brugha barracks even though it was where which Collins had lived in the simple 2 story house had confined himself to two rooms on the barracks side away from the high wall where the IRA repeatedly climbed in order to kill him .
