Dáil passes motion calling for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza​


The Dáil has passed a motion calling for unimpeded humanitarian access to meet the urgent needs of all civilians in Gaza.

The motion stressed that Israel's right to defend itself from attack must be in line with international law.

It also echoed the UN call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and expressed alarm at the rising death toll and displacement of citizens in Gaza.

The motion said that the taking of hostages, including children and the elderly, was unconscionable and called for their immediate and unconditional release.

It unreservedly condemned the attack by Hamas in Israel on Sunday 7 October.

The motion was passed by 121 votes to 14, but its wording was not unanimously agreed.

Sinn Féin had sought to amend the text adding that the Dáil unreservedly condemns Israel's brutal assault on Gaza which has resulted in more than 3,000 deaths.

Tánaiste announces €13m 'immediate' aid package​


The Tánaiste has announced an "immediate" €13 million aid package for Palestinian people following recent violence in the Middle East.

Micheál Martin said the aid package includes €10m for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and €3m for the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs'.

Speaking in the Dáil, Mr Martin called on European Union and regional partners "to step up now to provide whatever financial support they can to UNRWA", the agency to which Ireland is giving its "unwavering support".

He said that Ireland's assistance to Palestinians was to have been €16m this year, but this "will now almost double" with the €13m announced today.

31% rise in contacts to Dublin Rape Crisis Centre last year​


There was a 31% rise in the number of contacts to the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) national helpline last year, according to the organisation's annual report.

Of the 18,400 people that contacted the helpline, 9,285 did so for the first-time. 84% of contacts were female.

About 60% of the contacts were based in Dublin while 40% called from elsewhere in Ireland.

Most of the people who contacted the line were Irish (87%) - and callers cited 64 different countries of origin.

Contacts ranged in age from under 16 to over 80 years, according to the report, and the largest cohort was 18-23 year-olds (20% of contacts), followed by 40-49 year-olds (19%).

The busiest month for the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre last year was July.

607 people were supported via webchat, which was up 46% from 2021. 289 clients were new in 2022 and 291 were ongoing.

Where onward referrals were made, most were to a Rape Crisis Centre (38% of contacts) or counselling services (12%) followed by a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (8%) or other medical services (8%).

AKRAM LIVES IN Ireland with his eight-year-old son. His daughter, who is 26-years-old, is in Gaza with his older brother. Today, after calling many times, he got a voice message from her confirming that she is OK.

“She said she was sending a voice message, just in case I wanted to hear the sound of her voice, because she knows… she knows that I am worried,” he said.

Akram has played that voice message more than once. He was amongst a large crowd that carried out a peaceful demonstration in front of Dáil Eireann in Dublin city today.

The message the crowd was there to deliver is very clear – they want to see the Israeli ambassador in Ireland expelled, as a move of solidarity with the people of Palestine by the Irish Government.

Long after the person with the microphone went home, a Palestinian man with a hoarse voice led the chanting crowd, which was made up of Irish people, Palestinians, and people from other countries living in Ireland.

Multiple speakers gave speeches in which they detailed Israel’s “war crimes”, which included, in their view, the bombing of the Baptist Hospital in Gaza last night. Israel has blamed a militant group for the bombing – the Islamic Jihads – but they have refuted the accusations, and insisted that Israel is responsible.

The full facts of the attack on the hospital are not yet clear.

President Higgins to have a private audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican later today

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins will meet Pope Francis later this morning in the Vatican as part of his five-day visit to Rome.

He will have a private audience with Pope Francis in the Pontiff’s Library in the Vatican.

Today’s meeting will be the fourth such engagement between President Higgins and Pope Francis, following previous meetings in the Vatican and at Áras an Uachtaráin.

It’s thought that President Higgins will discuss a number of issues of shared interest with Pope Francis, including climate change, migration, global poverty, food security, the rights of indigenous people and global peace.

President Higgins has praised the contribution Pope Francis has made to the debate on these issues, particularly within his recent encyclical Laudate Deum.

Laudate Deum (Praise God) is described as Pope Francis’ “exhortation to all people of good will on the climate crisis”.

Storm Babet leaves flooded roads and power outages in its wake in southern counties

SEVERAL ROADS IN the south of the country are still under water this morning after major flooding from heavy rainfall yesterday.

Cork County Council has appealed for road users to take care when travelling this morning and to be conscious of pedestrians and cyclists. Multiple roads are still closed and impassable due to flooding, according to the council.

Meanwhile, in Waterford, a Council official has stated that several roads are flooded and are expected to remain that way for the rest of the day.

A Status Orange Rain warning was in place for Cork and Kerry early yesterday amid Storm Babet, followed by a Status Yellow warning across the country. Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford were also subject to an Orange warning for several hours in the afternoon.

Around 540 jobs under threat at Wyeth Nutrition in Limerick​


More than 500 jobs are under threat at the Wyeth Nutrition infant formula factory in Askeaton, Co Limerick.

Owner Nestlé has announced a proposal to close the plant by the first quarter of 2026.

A co-located research and development centre would also shut by the first quarter of 2025 under the proposals.

"We will now consult with all employees and their representative unions," the company said in a statement.

"Regrettably, today's announcement means approximately 542 colleagues will be placed at risk of redundancy."

The plant previously belonged to Pfizer Nutrition and was bought by Nestlé in 2012.

It currently operates as Wyeth Nutritionals Ireland Ltd.

So, before the latest round of the Israel/Palestine conflict we were giving €16m this year (and every year since 2000) to Palestine. It's really disgusting how much we spend on foreign aid. Some is okay and justified, e.g. for natural disasters, but donating hundreds of millions from our annual budget it is too much. I remember around 2010 during the recession when the Government wanted to downgrade the South East Air Rescue Service to save a measly €1m per year for a service that literally saves lives. Today we still hear about underfunded or non-funded vital services, e.g. for autistic kids, while we see stories like this or the treasonous €4 billion set aside for Ukraine.

And it's not something we have seen discussed.
Hundreds of billions of debt have accrued since 2008.
All at no or negligible interest rates.
And the debt was refinanced in a similar fashion.
That's no longer an option for Ireland Inc!
When are we coming to the consequences of this policy?
Not a peep do far.

An example of a situation which is too stupid to be accidental.

It is part of an obvious plan.

I don't have a clue what yiz are on about there, but the debt will continue by printing money until a loaf of bread costs 50 yoyos.

We don't print our own money anymore .
We don't control our finances anymore.
And simply put.
Money borrowed costs a lot more nowadays.

Partly true, partly not true. It is the ECB actually produces the notes and coins. But money is created out of nothing right here in Ireland. Every time a credit institution grants a loan, they create money out of nothing thereby expanding their balance sheet and theoretically when the principal is repaid they withdraw that money contracting their balance sheet.
