When I wrote on the Ballinrobe protests a couple of days ago, I hinted at a few problems. Within 24 hours my worst nightmares were realised as it seems the leaders of that group evaporated and eh claimed some sort of victory. Except, the victory was a big defeat. In the end, they gave tacit approval for the importation of Non-EU nationals into the JJ Gannon Hotel in the town. Fairly, black and white.

Now, a number of prominent people are claiming on-line that the people of Ballinrobe were fooled. That is inaccurate. The people of Ballinrobe were not really fooled at all. Having visited the town twice I never saw more than 60 people out on the streets on either occasion. This was in effect a pop-up protest group seeking to get on-line virality and traction. What their motivations were is anyone’s guess. In fairness, the protest was certainly successful from that point of view.
The leader of the
“ Ballinrobe says No “ Facebook group and whose videos went viral is not from the actual town of Ballinrobe but living in a satellite village close to the town. As I said in my original posting not many Ballinrobe people were on the street the day I visited or on the Monday morning when I dropped in for another look. In a sense, the effect of this protest was to stop Ballinrobe people from joining it in their hundreds because the organisers of it didn’t come from the heart of the town.
Now, hard truth number one.
Anywhere, you see a protest being led by a Facebook group called:
“ X Town Says No “
this is a group that needs to be questioned harder than any other type of protest group. Some are genuine and some are quite frankly so pathetic one wonders are they something more than pathetic if you catch my drift.
Now, I have seen a plethora of these social media groups pop up over the last couple of years and as of yet none of them have made a long lasting impact in a town. Most times they are led by people not from the town or from the town housing estates in question. They are not made up of neighbours and friends in other words.
What they do have going for them is the support of many alt-media personalities acting as both content creators and activists. This has brought some awakening of people but has been a recipe for disaster in terms of effecting real change. To repeat, activists seeking to be big media personalities, content providers and also political candidates are a case in point. Now, that is just my opinion. Pick your poison. Does that mean the majority of people that get drawn into supporting these groups are bad people. Absolutely not. Does it mean the leaders are agents of the government?
Maybe but probably not. Not necessarily but they do have their own agendas that many of you do not know about.
David “ the Chariot “O’Reilly is a case in point.
Firstly, Earlier today, I heard a prominent alt-media character who produces decent written and activist video content proclaim that “ we “need to become our own media. Bullshit, and absolutely bat-shit crazy, in my opinion.
Now, it’s a funny concept and timing considering plans are well under foot to create a new political party,
The Irish People with its own new media company
The Hun.ie. Sorry, apologies thehum.ie must learn to get that name right.
David O’Reilly is centrally involved in both, along with a guy called AJ Cahill. I am naming David O’Reilly because he is one of the registered owners of this brand new political party and also very much part of the hun.ie, sorry I mean the hum.ie.
Curiously, the registered address of this political party is an accountancy practice in Dublin. Curiouser still , the Irish electoral commission gave it the rubber-stamp one day after the Dublin riots following the child-stabbing events in Parnell Square. Read into that what you may. Or don’t, obviously.
Now, I have issued invitations to interview to both Mr Cahill and Mr O’Reilly. Mr Cahill has agreed to interview next week. No word back from David O’Reilly. Hmmm, I wonder why. No response to the below invitation to date but I look forward to talking to Mr Cahill next week.
