I must say I really did like Sydney.

I supposedly lived in a suburb - Surry Hills, but I could walk to the Opera House and back up again, perhaps through the park beside it, in about an hour, or less.

I was there in 01/02, it was already 'multicultural' then, but more like Hongcouver.

That would have been around peak Australia, and it has definitely declined since then. A million dollars wouldn't get you much even in the way of a unit in Surrey Hills now. For a decent one, you'd want about double that and more if buying at auction.
