Top German MP threatens X and Telegram with bans

Berlin must tackle “online radicalization” and further tighten control over social media, the legislator said

Germany must act to stop the dissemination of extremist content online and block major social media platforms if necessary, a senior MP from the country’s Green Party has said.
MP Anton Hofreiter, the chairman of the Bundestag’s European policy committee, made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to reporters from Funke Media Group. The politician called for tighter control over social media, up to the outright blocking of certain platforms.
“One of the biggest problems of extremism is online radicalization,”Hofreiter stated, adding that the dissemination of “anti-constitutional content on the Internet” must be stopped.
“We need to tackle the root of the problem and push back radicalization in digital space as well as in society,” he stressed.
Those social media platforms that refuse to abide by German laws and remove “extremist content”must be blocked altogether, Hofreiter argued, specifically singling out X, formerly Twitter, among the potential targets.
Telegram is no ‘anarchic paradise’ – Durov READ MORE: Telegram is no ‘anarchic paradise’ – Durov
However, blocking platforms must only be a last resort measure, the MP noted, urging the government not to distance itself from modern technology. Instead, the government should use them for its own benefits, namely deploying “digital agents” to infiltrate private groups on Telegram to identify potential criminals, Hofreiter suggested.
The call to toughen Germany’s stance on social media comes after a new series of incidents, including a shooting outside the Israeli consulate in Munich, as well as a knifing rampage in Solingen that left three dead.
In recent days, several countries have taken steps to rein in social media platforms. Earlier this week, Brazil slapped a blanket ban on X; the platform had failed to comply with local political misinformation and hate speech laws by refusing to delete certain offending messages.
In late August, the Russian tech entrepreneur and founder of Telegram Pavel Durov was arrested in Paris. The businessman now faces a multitude of charges related to complicity in drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud, and various forms of child abuse, stemming from the actions of Telegram users. While Durov was ultimately released on bail, he has been ordered to stay in France while the investigation is ongoing

Ukraine deploys ‘dragon drones’ against Russia – CNN

Kiev’s “fire-spewing” UAVs put a modern twist on historic thermite munitions, according to the broadcaster

Ukraine has begun flying UAVs that drop thermite, a molten metal, on Russian forces at the front, CNN has reported. The incendiary munitions were developed in Germany and widely used by the Nazis and Allies alike during the Second World War.
During the week, several Telegram channels linked to the Ukrainian military published videos of low-flying “fire-spewing” drones targeting Russian positions in wooded areas, the broadcaster said in an article on Saturday.
The UAVs, which had been nicknamed “dragon drones” due to the molten metal that they deploy resembling fire coming from the mouth of the mythical reptile, put a new twist on historic technology, it said.
Thermite is a mix of aluminum powder and iron oxide that burns at temperatures of up to 2,200 degrees Celsius (4,000 degrees Fahrenheit). The munitions can rip through metal or quickly destroy vegetation that provides cover to troops. Incendiary weapons such as thermite, napalm and white phosphorus are not banned for combat under international law.
Thermite was originally developed by German chemist Hans Goldschmidt in the 1890s for civilian purposes, but ended up being used “to horrific effect” in both World Wars, the media outlet noted.

During WWII, both the Nazis and the Allies relied on thermite bombs, which were mainly dropped at night because precision wasn’t necessary. The incendiary munitions delivered massive damage to many cities during the conflict as their use often resulted in major blazes.
Earlier this week, Dr Iain Overton, the executive director of the British NGO Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), warned on X (formerly Twitter) that “the widespread use of thermite bombs increases the likelihood of these weapons being deployed in populated areas. The result could be catastrophic, with horrific injuries and loss of life among civilians.”
Nicholas Drummond, a defense industry analyst and former British Army officer, told CNN that the effect of Kiev’s “dragon drones” would likely be “psychological more than physical.” Drummond expressed a belief that Ukraine only possesses a limited capacity to deliver a thermite effect, so this is “a niche capability rather than a new mainstream weapon.”

On Friday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chair of the country’s Security Council, told Tass that Russia has become the world’s leader in the military use of UAVs amid the conflict with Ukraine. “It is obvious that we… have gotten an enormous boost in this area. When it comes to drones, Russia is the top dog. This is an undeniable fact, simply due to recent events. These skills will serve us well,” he said.

German chancellor tells Ukrainians to start working

Olaf Scholz’s remark comes amid public debate over providing refugees with government handouts

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has urged Ukrainian refugees in the country to more actively seek employment. He also called on officials to cut red tape and on employers to take on more Ukrainian nationals.
The Berlin government has been criticized over special treatment given to Ukrainian refugees, allowing them – unlike asylum claimants from other countries – to receive Burgergeld, or the citizen’s allowance. The social benefit is typically reserved for low-income Germans or EU nationals living in the country.
The conservative CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), have argued that the generous handouts serve to discourage Ukrainians from looking for work.
More than a million Ukrainian refugees were estimated to be living in Germany as of July 2024.
Speaking at an event organized by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in his constituency in Teltow on Saturday, Scholz said that even though a special government program has brought the number of employed Ukrainians to 200,000, “there are another couple of hundred thousand” who are still unemployed.
“So, it is my wish that [Ukrainians] work,” the chancellor said.
German town stops accepting Ukrainian migrants READ MORE: German town stops accepting Ukrainian migrants
The German leader conceded that many Ukrainian refugees will not be able to immediately land a job in line with their qualifications, or will have to settle for part-time employment at first, but stressed that such factors should not discourage them from seeking jobs.
He also expressed incredulity that out of 2,000 Ukrainian doctors who have tried to find roles in the German healthcare system, only 120 have managed to secure a work permit.
The chancellor urged employers to “take a look at the people,” adding that required certificates can be obtained at a later date.
In addition, Scholz called on regional authorities to reduce the number of offices with overlapping functions that assess foreigners’ professional qualifications.
In July, CSU leader Markus Soder, who is also the head of the state of Bavaria, told the media that should a conservative government come to power on the federal level, it will stop paying the citizen’s allowance to Ukrainian refugees
A month prior, the chairman of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Alexander Dobrindt, told Bild that “more than two years after the start of the war, the principle must now apply: take up work in Germany or return to safe areas of western Ukraine.”
Bild reported earlier this year that the employment rate among Ukrainian refugees in Germany stood at only 25%, the lowest figure among host nations.

Washington wants Ukraine’s resources – US Senator

Kiev is sitting on a “trillion dollars’ worth of minerals” that are “good” for the US economy, US Senator Lindsey Graham says

US Senator Lindsey Graham has openly said Washington needs Ukraine’s natural resources and that, therefore, military aid to the country must continue until Kiev is able to “win” its conflict with Russia.
The South Carolina Republican, one of the top backers of Kiev within the US establishment, made the remarks on Friday in Kiev, speaking alongside leader Vladimir Zelensky. He praised the Ukrainians and their purported resolve to fight Moscow no matter what, noting that this means that Americans themselves don’t have to do this, only to provide the weaponry.
“They [the Ukrainians] are sitting on a trillion dollars’ worth of minerals that could be good to our economy. So, I want to keep helping our friends in Ukraine. We can win this. They need our help,” Graham stated.
The senator has long been very open about Washington’s true goals in the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, repeatedly bringing up the “trillions worth” of resources in the hands of the Ukrainians as a crucial asset and the ultimate prize for the US. He also previously described the deaths of Russians in the conflict as “the best money we ever spent” and an all-round solid investment for the US.
Medvedev believes he knows why Kiev wants Donbass READ MORE: Medvedev believes he knows why Kiev wants Donbass
Graham’s new admission matches the assessment of the US motives recently outlined by Russia’s ex-president and the incumbent deputy chair of the National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev. Last week, Medvedev claimed both Kiev and its Western backers have been focused on holding their grip on Donbass solely over its natural-resource riches.
“According to open-source data, the total value of Ukraine’s former mineral resource base is estimated at almost $14.8 trillion, but $7.3 trillion of this is now in the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics. That means almost half of the former Ukraine’s national wealth is in Donbass!” Medvedev explained in a lengthy Telegram post.
“To get access to the coveted minerals, the Western parasites shamelessly demand that their wards wage war to the last Ukrainian. They are already directly voicing such intent without hesitation,” Russia’s former leader added.

German chancellor wants to end Ukraine conflict ‘faster’

The time has come for discussions about ending the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible, Chancellor Olaf Scholz says

A renewed effort to try and bring an end to the enduring conflict between Moscow and Kiev is needed, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said.
The leader made the remarks in a televised interview with broadcaster ZDF aired on Sunday. “I believe that now is the time to discuss how to arrive at peace from this state of war, indeed at a faster pace,” he stated.
Despite its initial reluctance to lavishly pour military aid into Ukraine like many other Western countries, Berlin has become one of the top backers of Kiev amid the conflict. Germany has supplied the Ukrainian military with assorted hardware, including Leopard 1 and 2 main battle tanks, as well as Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
The talk about reaching peace in Ukraine as soon as possible comes as Scholz continues to struggle with assorted domestic problems. According to a poll published by ZDF separately and later in the day, some 77% of Germans believe him to be a weak leader, while only 17% speak favorably about his leadership qualities.
Western governments are in a crisis of their own making READ MORE: Western governments are in a crisis of their own making
The poll has apparently marked the worst approval ratings shown by Scholz during his tenure, with some 74% of respondents believing the Chancellor should not become the frontrunner for the Social Democratic party at all in the upcoming September 2025 federal election.
Scholz’s ruling coalition suffered painful setbacks during regional elections last week, showing poor performances in Thuringia and Saxony, in the former East Germany. The two major regions have seen the rise of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the recently-formed left-wing populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW).
Both parties, despite being on the polar sides of the spectrum, strongly oppose Germany’s enduring involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, mass immigration, and related economic hardships blamed on the Scholz government.

Ukraine wants Italy to use its presidency in the G7 to pressure the US to deliver more Patriot air defense missile batteries to Kiev, the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the newspaper, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky sees Rome as “a mediator” that could help to “push Washington to unblock the transfer of a significant number of Patriots” before the US presidential election in November.
Zelensky met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio on Saturday, where the leaders discussed further Western aid to Ukraine. Meloni reaffirmed her support and promised “not to abandon Ukraine.”
Officials in Kiev have been urging NATO countries to provide more advanced air defense systems as Russia has stepped up strikes on Ukrainian territory in recent weeks, hitting energy infrastructure and military targets. According to Italian media, Rome is expected to donate a second SAMP/T anti-air battery by the end of this month.

The Defense Post reported in June that Ukraine had a total of three operational Patriot batteries. US President Joe Biden promised a month later that Kiev would get five additional batteries provided by Washington and its allies. “We are laser-focused on Ukraine’s priority needs, including air defense, fires, and armor,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said this week.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated in the past that several Patriot launchers had already been destroyed in Ukraine. Moscow insists that no amount of Western weapons will deter its troops, with the Kremlin warning in June that “every new shipment constitutes another wave of escalation.”

Ukrainian politician calls for ban on kids leaving country

Children forced to grow up in war conditions will hate Russia and help their nation to survive, Dmitry Korchinsky has claimed

Ukraine should ban children from leaving the country, so that they are forced to experience the hardships of the conflict with Russia and grow up hating the enemy, a radical Ukrainian politician has proposed.
Dmitry Korchinsky, a veteran Ukrainian nationalist, who heads the far right Brotherhood party, said major restrictions should be introduced because “we are not fighting for democracy, we are fighting for survival.”
“The survival of the nation requires us to ban not only fighting-age men, but also children from leaving,”
he told the Great Lviv news outlet on Sunday. “I understand that keeping kids abroad during war is less stressful for many. But we realize that those children will not come back to Ukraine.”
“Ukrainian children must not hear Polish or German in their environment. They must be brought up to the sound of air sirens, grow up here hating the enemy. They must mature here, in Ukraine,”
Korchinsky added.

Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic: Why has Zelensky purged the Ukrainian government?

Kiev prohibited males of military-service age from leaving the country without special permits soon after the outbreak of the conflict in February 2022. Nevertheless, hundreds of thousands have fled, some risking their lives to do so illegally.
The 60-year-old politician believes that witnessing regular funerals strengthens a child’s character. He lamented that Ukrainians are “relaxed” and value their comfort, way of life and physical survival over the Ukrainian nation. He described speaking Russian as a major offense for Ukrainians.
”If somebody does not understand that he must love Ukraine, we will make him love Ukraine, whether he likes it or not. We’ll force him to stay and either fight or support the front,” he said.
Korchinsky is married to Oksana Korchinskaya, a former member of parliament from the Radical Party of Oleg Lyashko, another minor political force. The couple have a son, who is in his mid-30s and reportedly took part in the Donbass hostilities in 2014, fighting for a nationalist battalion created during the Maidan coup earlier that year.
READ MORE: France to pay for Ukrainian weapons with Russian funds
Korchinsky claims that as a younger man he participated in several armed conflicts, fighting against Russia, including in Transnistria, Abkhazia and Chechnya. He is wanted by Russian law enforcement for his incendiary rhetoric.
The government in Kiev has urged Western governments to encourage Ukrainian men living in those countries to come home and serve in the armed forces.
Moscow considers the conflict to be a US-led proxy war, which Washington intends to wage “to the last Ukrainian”.

I think it's 50 killed and the rest of the 600 or so injured.

Still a brutal result! Not sure how many were Swedes but no wonder the Swedish foreign minister resigned!
Russia has obviously inflicted some pain and damage, but I'd be surprised if the whole Saab management team was wiped out as I am sure there would be company protocols prohibiting such a gathering in a war zone.

However, if 600 NATO personnel were killed then we might hope that some sense starts to prevail at the European end of the organisation, but it's only a hope for the US will twist the arms harder still.
Just watched Judge Napolitano talking to Alistair Crooke and they both say that the death toll, not including injured is now 720 there😯.

I guess we will never know the exact number but if it's anything like that then I don't know how they'll keep a lid on it!

Western car brands that quit the Russian market following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict are unlikely to be able to return in the future despite retaining buyback options, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov has said.
Germany’s Mercedes, France’s Renault, and Japan’s Nissan left Russia in 2022 after the US, the EU, and their allies launched an unprecedented sanctions campaign against Moscow. Their assets were sold to Russian companies or transferred to the government, but the contracts included a buyback clause, which gives the firm the right to return to the country and reclaim its business in the future.
However, their places have already been taken by other manufacturers, according to Manturov, who previously served as minister of industry and trade.
“The carmakers simply ran away, slamming the door. Yes, they do have buyback options but I very much doubt that a return is realistic and feasible. The [firms] that have replaced them have offered… much more favorable terms,” he said in an interview published in Vedomosti newspaper on Tuesday.

Then they shelter the same Nazis from justice when found out.

People eager to condemn the atrocities committed by the Third Reich are at the same time turning a blind eye to Ukrainian troops wearing Nazi symbols today, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has lamented.
The head of the government gave a speech at the holocaust museum located at the former site of the Sered concentration camp on Monday in western Slovakia, in which he highlighted the need to educate new generations about the crimes committed by Nazis during World War II before bringing up the Ukraine conflict.
“We all talk about fascism, Nazism, while silently tolerating units moving across Ukraine that have a very clear label and are connected to movements that we consider dangerous and forbidden today. Since it is a geopolitical fight, nobody cares,” Fico said.
“I want to pay tribute to the victims, not with pathetic speech, but I want to call for action,” he added. “The international community should recognize that troops using Nazi insignia, who often appear to act as such, cannot fight in Ukraine.”

Kiev has embraced as heroes Ukrainian nationalists who collaborated with Nazi Germany while the symbols and ideology of the Third Reich have been popular among growing right-wing forces in the country for decades. The Azov battalion, accused of war crimes and atrocities, is infamous for its open embrace of bigotry and white supremacism, although its successor unit claims to have mostly eradicated such people from its ranks.
Ukrainian troops have repeatedly been filmed brandishing Nazi iconography on their uniforms and weapons, including during the ongoing incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region. In a widely publicized incident, two Ukrainian soldiers filmed themselves imitating invading Wehrmacht troops while harassing an elderly Russian civilian. The man went missing after the encounter.
Thousands of Ukrainian Nazi collaborators made their way to Western nations, such as Canada, when the Axis powers were defeated in 1945. Some of them were later used by the CIA in attempts to destabilize the USSR during the Cold War.

Just last week, Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa expressed reservations against releasing the list of some 900 alleged Nazi criminals who fled to the country after the war. Making the names public may embarrass the country’s Ukrainian community, officials told the media.
The Slovakian prime minister is a vocal critic of Western support for Kiev against Moscow. The Ukrainian Nazi link is one of the reasons he has cited in explaining his position.

There are many companies in Germany that are not at all happy with the situation and want to get back to trading with Russia ASAP. But the anger is not overt, it is couched in mealy mouthed words that carry little impact, and if pushed they will close down the conversation or change the subject.
