I don't see Russia accepting any kind of frozen conflict as that won't work for them at all. I think Russia will just keep destroying the Ukrainian Army and will likely take Kharkov and Odessa.

Perhaps Zelensky will be secretly instructed to surrender before that point? Or maybe the Neocons will instruct some Ukrainian general to wack him and take power, looking to talk to Putin, while of course the US pretend they're outraged etc. He's Jewish so this is unlikely.

Some thoughts from the higher echelons of the Russian government by Sergey Karaganov, former presidential adviser to both Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin and head of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy. So probably indicative of what Putin is thinking.

Our country, and its leadership, seems to me to be facing a difficult choice. It is becoming increasingly clear that our clash with the West will not end even if we achieve a partial – let alone a crushing – victory in Ukraine.

Even if we completely liberate the Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, it will be a minimal victory. A slightly greater success would be to liberate the whole of eastern and southern Ukraine within a year or two. But it would still leave part of the country with an even more embittered ultra-nationalist population pumped full of weapons – a bleeding wound that threatens inevitable complications, such as another war.

The situation could be worse if we liberate the whole of Ukraine at the cost of monstrous sacrifices and are left with ruins and a population that mostly hates us. It would take more than a decade to “re-educate” them.

Any of these options, especially the last one, will distract Russia from the much-needed shift of its spiritual, economic, military and political center to the East of Eurasia. We will be stuck with a wasteful focus on the West. And the territories of today’s Ukraine, especially the central and western ones, will attract resources – both human and financial. These regions were heavily subsidised even in Soviet times.

I already mentioned Normandy and 2nd Alamein before, Declan. Battles of localised attrition and small incremental advances, until one side could no longer stop a breakthrough.

There's also the interesting aspect that most of the AFU mechanised forces are not committed anywhere.

I note its June 18th, but the war isn't over.

It looks over to me. The difference between this and the Battle of the Bulge is that there is no bulge here

It looks to me as tanks are obsolete. They had a decent run from 1917 to 2022, but maybe they were exposed in the iraqi massacre about 20 years ago as well. Regardless of armor, the tracks fall off or they get stuck in mud. Also I have heard for years that after two weeks they more or less need an engine overhaul. They are easy targets of a cheap drone or stray bomb or missile.
I predict they will not be in any parades next year and will be replaced by a few drones hovering past the Kremlin.
