Apparently the tunnels are under the head quarters of Chabad who are a particularly psycho group but also one with a lot of political connections- Jared Kushner is a member of a Chabad Synagogue (a lot of which now are basically Modern Orthodox rather than Haredi).

From what I can gather it looks like they were dug during covid lockdowns to avoid them and get to to the temple covertly.

Indeed, and who decided that was what needed to be done, and paid for it? The whole thing stinks of some very dodgy goings on.

Looking at the Daily Mail reporting it seems that the synagogue elders were trying to fill the tunnel but another group was resisting. It might termed a domestic dispute that got out of control I guess, but what is interesting is that the general reaction is to suspect a great wickedness being perpetrated by the jews, which could well be the case, although there is as yet no direct proof of that. It's not looking good for the hatted ones.

The below is saying that it is about a dispute between two different groups of Chabadniks (the place in question is Holy to them because it is associated with their Seventh Rebbe who some of them believe is the Messiah even though he is dead)- one group seemed to be denying access to the group which created the tunnels. Who knows though? I am sure there is a significant amount more to this.
