RT has played a major role in eroding support for Ukraine around the world, and the network has fundraised to buy weapons for the Russian military, the US State Department claimed on Friday. The US has sanctioned RT’s parent company in response.
In a press briefing in Washington, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken leveled a slew of accusations against RT. Blinken claimed that the outlet operates a range of nominally independent news channels on social media in order to spread pro-Kremlin messaging, that it operates a secretive cyber operations unit linked to Russian intelligence, and that it covertly manages a crowdfunding platform to arm and supply Russian troops fighting in the Ukraine conflict.
“Thanks to new information, much of which originates from RT employees, we know that RT possesses cyber capabilities and engaged in covert information and influence operations and military procurement,” Blinken told reporters.
Blinken did not fully explain RT’s supposed “cyber capabilities,” but said that the network’s alleged cyber unit runs “covert influence operations” around the world, and supplies information to Russian media outlets, “mercenary groups,” and other “arms of the Russian government.”

The crowdfunding campaign is not directly linked to RT, the American diplomat admitted, before claiming that it is covertly run by an RT employee. According to Blinken, this campaign has raised money within Russia to supply Russian troops with sniper rifles, suppressors, body armor, drones, and other equipment.
Aside from these alleged activities, RT’s reporting is damaging to US interests, State Department official Jamie Rubin told reporters after Blinken spoke.
“One of the reasons – not the only reason – why so much of the world has not been as fully supportive of Ukraine as you would think they would be, given that Russia has invaded Ukraine and violated rule number 1 of the international system – is because of the broad scope and reach of RT, where propaganda, disinformation and lies is spread to millions if not billions around the world,” he declared.
Rubin runs the State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC), essentially its propaganda and intelligence wing. The GEC has funded propaganda games aimed at children and forced Twitter to censor pro-Russian content, while Rubin admitted last year that he intends to use the GEC to shut down Russian media outlets around the world.
Blinken announced that RT’s parent company, Rossiya Segodnya, its director, and one other entity and two individuals, would be sanctioned in response to the allegations.

The sanctions come just over a week after two people alleged to work for RT were criminally charged by the US Justice Department for their alleged role in pushing video content that sowed “discord and division” in the US. The two Russians were also sanctioned by the US Treasury Department, along with RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan and three other senior RT employees.
Asked to comment on the State Department’s announcement by CNN earlier on Friday, RT’s press office sarcastically replied “We’ve been broadcasting straight out of the KGB headquarters all this time.”
“No, but seriously, we’re running out of popcorn to sit and watch what the US government will come up with next about us,” the press office added.

Washington is targeting RT because the news network has presented the facts that the conflict in Ukraine is a proxy war being fought by the US and NATO against Russia, RT contributor Tara Reade, a former aide to Joe Biden, has said.
On Thursday, the US announced a new round of sanctions against RT, with James Rubin, the head of the State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC), accusing the news organization of undermining support for Ukraine globally.
“One of the reasons… why so much of the world has not been as fully supportive of Ukraine as one might expect… is because of the broad scope and reach of RT,” Rubin claimed.
Ironically, the accusations only enhance RT’s reputation as a “really good journalistic media corporation” that effectively reaches its audience, Reade said in an interview on Thursday. “I think this is unprecedented what happened... it shows how successful RT has been.”

Washington is suppressing free speech and essentially “trying to criminalize thought” in an attempt to “siphon the message to their point of view while silencing international voices,” she added.

The Russian army has struck Ukrainian invading forces in Kursk Region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said. It has released video of the attack.
In a statement on Friday, the ministry said that aerial reconnaissance of the Russian group of forces ‘North’, covering the border, had detected a Ukrainian unit, and that the “spotted targets have been eliminated.”
“The artillerymen did not leave the adversary any chances,” the ministry added.
At the same time, officials provided no details about where exactly the strike took place or what casualties Kiev suffered.

A brief black-and-white clip shared by the ministry, apparently filmed by a drone, shows what appears to be a Ukrainian armored personnel carrier parked in a field near a rural road, surrounded by several infantrymen. The group takes a direct hit from an artillery shell, sending a plume of fire and smoke into the air.
Ukraine launched its largest-to-date incursion into Kursk Region in early August and initially made some progress, with the attack reportedly being supported by some of the best Kiev’s units. The Russian Defense Ministry, however, has said that the advance has been halted, and that Moscow’s forces have pushed back their opponents in some areas in recent days.

Ukrainian officials have said the purpose of the attack was to gain a better position for possible peace talks with Russia and to instill fear in the country’s population. Moscow has ruled out any negotiations as long as Ukrainian troops are on Russian soil, while accusing Kiev of indiscriminate attacks on civilians.
The Russian Defense Ministry has estimated Ukrainian losses at more than 12,000 service members and hundreds of armored vehicles since the start of the Kursk operation.

A court in Ukraine is to consider a lawsuit by opposition lawmaker Aleksandr Dubinski on Monday, arguing that Vladimir Zelensky has been illegally holding power since his term expired on May 20. Dubinski has been in custody since last November, facing a litany of charges, including high treason.
A presidential election was due to be held in Ukraine on March 31, but Zelensky indefinitely postponed the vote, citing martial law imposed due to the conflict with Russia.
Dubinski originally filed his lawsuit in late June, arguing that Zelensky’s actions violated the Ukrainian constitution, and urged parliament to call a presidential election.
At a hearing a month later, the court postponed the case until September 16, according to the MP.

In a post on his Telegram channel in July, the lawmaker wrote: “I have to state – there is only one citizen and member of parliament in Ukraine that has taken steps to preserve the constitutional order… it is non-attached MP Dubinski.”
Earlier that month, the prosecutor general’s office launched a fourth criminal probe into the politician over his failure to file tax returns while in custody.
Last November, the Security Service of Ukraine charged Dubinski with high treason over his alleged “information-subversive activities in the interest of Russia.”
The lawmaker has dismissed the accusations, along with two other charges against him, as politically motivated.
Earlier this month, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that “de jure President Zelensky now is not the legitimate president” of Ukraine. His comment echoed those made earlier by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in early June, the Russian head of state suggested that presidential powers should have been transferred to the Ukrainian parliament following the expiry of Zelensky’s five-year term in office.
By remaining at the helm, the Ukrainian leader appears to be in breach of “Article 109 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which says that this should be treated as seizure of power,” the Russian president argued at the time.
Putin went on to claim that Ukraine’s Western backers were keeping Zelensky in power with a view to blaming him for upcoming “unpopular decisions,” such as lowering the “mobilization age to 18.”
“I think the US administration will force the leadership of Ukraine to make these decisions… and then will get rid of Zelensky,” the Russian president predicted.

Ryan Wesley Routh, whom the US media identified as the gunman who allegedly targeted former President Donald Trump on Sunday, is to be subjected to a mental health evaluation, according to sources cited by CNN. Federal authorities reportedly requested the measure due to “unusual rants” the suspect posted online.
The 58-year-old man apparently has an unusual past. It includes a criminal conviction decades ago, trying to recruit US-trained Afghan fighters to join the Ukrainian military, and writing a self-published book, in which he ponders, among other things, why Russian President Vladimir Putin “has not been killed yet.”
The presumed would-be shooter was taken into custody on Sunday shortly after fleeing Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. At the time of writing, officials have not named him or charged him with any crime, but images and reports by media leave few doubts about the man’s identity.
A profile posted by Associated Press says that Routh lived most of his life in North Carolina, but moved to Kaaawa, Hawaii in 2018. In 2020, he donated to the Democratic Party’s presidential campaign of then-US Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, according to records.

Facebook and X have scrubbed the content of accounts that Routh is believed to have held in his name, though not before some media outlets researched them. In 2020, he reportedly urged then-President Trump to crack down on police misconduct to secure reelection, and said he’d voted for the Republican in 2016. His political preference appears to have switched to the Democrats since.
Criminal records reveal that while living in Greensboro, North Carolina Routh had multiple run-ins with the police. In 2002, he was convicted of possession of a weapon of mass destruction. The charge, according to local press, related to a fully automatic machine gun, over which he had a three-hour armed standoff with law enforcement. Routh, who was 36 at the time, barricaded himself at his business following a combative traffic stop.

In 2022, Routh apparently found himself a cause he considered worthy. Since the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, he was declaring online his willingness to go to Ukraine and die for the country fighting Russia. The conflict, he explained to Newsweek, is “black and white” and “good versus evil” like in books and movies.

He did travel to Europe and seek a place in the Ukrainian military but his overtures were rejected by Kiev. So, instead he joined the crowd of activists and NGOs raising aid for the Ukrainians, and recruiting foreign fighters willing to take up arms for the country.
That did not seem to work out particularly well either. In an interview with Semaphore in 2023, Routh complained that the Ukrainians were “afraid that anybody and everybody is a Russian spy.” He was explaining his pet project of getting a group of former Afghan commandos, who’d fled from the Taliban, to join the Ukrainian military, and why it failed.

At about the same time he was featured in a New York Times story about “US volunteers in Ukraine, who lie, waste and bicker,” as the title said. The article converted some higher-profile figures in the pro-Kiev circuit, such as former MSNBC commentator Malcolm Nance, and US military veteran James Vasquez, who became a minor online celebrity by posting battlefield videos, before getting in trouble for lying about his combat experience. Routh, according to Newsweek Romania journalist Remus Cernea, who interviewed him, came across as “an idealistic, innocent, genuine person.”
Routh’s disillusionment did not discourage him from rooting for Ukraine and sharing online the messages of its leader, Vladimir Zelensky. He also seemed to want to lay the ground for foreign fighters to go and fight against China for the self-governed island of Taiwan. He was involved with a website named Taiwan Foreign Legion, apparently modeled after Ukraine’s efforts to enlist foreign troops.

The man also apparently penned a book titled ‘Ukraine’s Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen – Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea and the end of Humanity.’ It was sold through Amazon but had no publisher, it seems, or even an editor.
According to excerpts from it, which were shared by journalist Max Blumenthal, Routh was perplexed that no insider would assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The swirling question in every chat around the world is to why Putin has not been killed yet. In the USA we have many killed; JFK, MLK, Robert Kennedy, Malcolm X, John Lennon, Tupac, Biggie, Jimmy Hoffa; so many that we cannot even remember them all,” he wrote, without explaining the comparison. “What has happened to the Russian people that they are brainwashed into totally blind sheep.”
In another passage he appeared to apologize to Iran for Joe Biden’s failure to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, which Trump scrapped during his presidency. He said Tehran was “free to assassinate Trump as well as me” for the “error” of voting for Biden.

Kiev is preparing a false flag operation, in which a children’s hospital or kindergarten could be hit by a supposed Russian missile strike, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed.
The “inhumane provocation” is being masterminded by the leaders of Ukrainian intelligence and the military at the advice of “US handlers,” the statement said on Monday. The goal is to cause a large number of casualties and publicize the event through the international media, the agency added.
Kiev hopes that its plot will help justify long-range strikes using Western weapons deep inside Russia, the SVR believes. The US would then use the incident to ramp up pressure on Iran and North Korea for supposedly providing ballistic missiles to Russia, the agency said.
On July 8, Kiev accused Moscow of deliberately targeting the Okhmatdet children’s hospital in central Kiev during a large-scale missile barrage. Interior Minister Igor Klimenko reported that two adults were killed in the incident, and 32 people including children were injured.

Moscow denied the Ukrainian allegations, reiterating that it never targets civilian facilities. The Russian military suggested that Ukrainian air defense operators were to blame.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at the time that Kiev was using the tragedy to hype up the participation of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky at the NATO summit in the US. He pointed to a pattern of high-profile incidents, similar to the Okhmatdet bombing, occurring before Zelensky’s meetings with senior foreign officials.
“The Zelensky clique disregards the lives of the Ukrainian children that it puts in harm’s way,” the SVR said. It cited a number of “bloody provocations” over the course of the conflict, adding that after those, “few people in the world believe that Moscow is ‘insidious” and Kiev is ‘innocent’.”
Zelensky is set to travel to the US to meet President Joe Biden, and the two presidential nominees for the November election – Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. He intends to share with them his so-called “victory plan,” a four-point roadmap which he believes will allow Ukraine to end the conflict with Russia on its own terms. Continued US military support and permission to conduct strikes deep inside Russia with Western weapons is understood to be crucial for his plan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Moscow will consider any such attacks to be direct aggression by NATO members, and would react accordingly. Moscow considers the Ukraine conflict to be a US-led proxy war against Russia.

Zelensky made the remarks in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria which aired on Sunday. He claimed Putin did not want to negotiate peace to end the conflict between the two countries, suggesting that only popular opinion at home could pressure him to do so.
“I am sure that he is afraid of only one thing. No leaders, no countries, no anything. He is afraid of his society, the Russian people,” Zelensky asserted.
If the Russian people are in danger, if they don’t have a comfortable life, if they live without energy, like our people, they will understand the price of war. They will be not happy with it and will begin to influence him, Putin.

The attack prompted the Russian president to withdraw the ceasefire offer he had tabled earlier this year. Previously, Putin said he would support an immediate truce if Kiev agreed to certain military and political concessions.
The apparent change in Moscow’s position on the matter has been further elaborated on by other top Russian officials, including the former Defense Minister and head of the Security Council, Sergey Shoigu. Last week, Shoigu accused Kiev of “top-level terrorism” over its attempts to target the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.

Russia’s stance on negotiations, however, has shifted in the wake of the ongoing Ukrainian invasion of the Kursk Region, which was launched in early August. The attack prompted the Russian president to withdraw the ceasefire offer he had tabled earlier this year. Previously, Putin said he would support an immediate truce if Kiev agreed to certain military and political concessions.
The apparent change in Moscow’s position on the matter has been further elaborated on by other top Russian officials, including the former Defense Minister and head of the Security Council, Sergey Shoigu. Last week, Shoigu accused Kiev of “top-level terrorism” over its attempts to target the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.
“We did not negotiate with terrorists, are not negotiating, and will not – and that is who they are,” he stated.

But but but….. I thought that all these sanctions had done just that already! If not, then what was the point of them?
