Ghibellinism was the belief that the Roman emperor, not the pope, ruled over Italy & Europe.
This was contrasted with Guelphism, which advocated for the kingdoms of Europe to respond only to the pope.
In 'Men Among the Ruins' Julius Evola advocated for a return to Ghibellinism, presumably in the form of a politician like Adolf Hitler.
This doesn't mean you throw religion to the dogs... on the contrary; Ghibellinism is deeply religious, probably even more so than Guelphism but it is a religion of the state.
