Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered hundreds of the U.S. military’s generals and admirals to gather on short notice — and without a stated reason — at a Marine Corps base in Virginia next week, sowing confusion and alarm after the Trump administration’s firing of numerous senior leaders this year.

The highly unusual directive was sent to virtually all of the military’s top commanders worldwide. The directive was issued earlier this week, as a government shutdown looms, and months after Hegseth’s team at the Pentagon announced plans to undertake a sweeping consolidation of top military commands.

In a statement Thursday, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell affirmed that Hegseth “will be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,” but he offered no additional details. Parnell, a senior adviser to the defense secretary, voiced no concerns about reporting on the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday in Quantico, Virginia.

There are about 800 generals and admirals spread across the United States and dozens of other countries and time zones. Hegseth’s order applies to all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their Navy equivalent, serving in command positions and their top enlisted advisers. Typically, these officers each oversee hundreds or thousands of rank-and-file troops.

Top commanders in conflict zones and senior military leaders stationed throughout Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region are among those expected to attend Hegseth’s meeting. The order does not apply to top military officers who hold staff positions.

None of the people who spoke with The Post could recall a defense secretary ever ordering so many of the military’s generals and admirals to assemble like this. Several said it raised security concerns.

“People are very concerned. They have no idea what it means,” one person said.
Two others expressed frustration that even many commanders stationed overseas will be required to attend. One said, this is “not how this is done.”

“You don’t call GOFOs leading their people and the global force into an auditorium outside D.C. and not tell them why/what the topic or agenda is,” this person said, using an abbreviation for general officer or flag officer.

“Are we taking every general and flag officer out of the Pacific right now?” one U.S. official said. “All of it is weird.”

at the same moment Russia has gone to maximum nuclear alert and many procedures for launching have been shortened a first in their history.

But if America were going to war that takes time and planning, lots of planning, so it will have been decided long ago and the various orders already prepared, it's how these things work, so I am not convinced that it's in preperation for a war.

Yes but there has been a war atmosphere now for a while.

Unfortunately if we are talking about the US going to war the invariable pattern is to have some high casualty false flag event, maybe not till December though.

Relax.

In Trump's America the Nothing Burger is the only thing on the menu.

I am convinced the plan is to have a war and probably nuclear, but how extensive or how long I have no idea. They need a war, as an excuse to introduce wartime powers, but also so that at its end they can portray their new world government apparatus as necessary for world peace.

I think @Anderson started another thread like this a few days ago and I've already forgotten what it was about, football or something

But why is that statement such a surprise? The world is bristling with nuclear weapons and its also very tense between countries with them? War came as a great shock to those in 1914, why would you assume we will dodge that bullet?

I am certainly not talking about the big intercontinental ballistic nuclear weapons, remember there are also smaller tactical ones and I think they will be used.

Why would anyone leave it at that? That's fantasy. Atomic bombs like those those dropped on Japan in WWII are literally the detonator for modern thermonuclear weapons (H-bombs)

The problem with that is that there is no way for anyone to keep it limited. Once nukes are used, a rubicon is crossed. Whats to stop gradual escalation? In that case you might as well escalate right away to all out war and try to destroy your opponent outright.

"Indeed, the adversary can never know or be sure that the intent is to keep the nuclear use limited and that the first volley will not be followed by more, especially since the first user would also be signalling readiness for more attacks to deter the adversary’s retaliation. If the adversary chooses a more elaborate response than had been envisioned by the first user, could this then remain a limited exchange?"

Personally, I think this may be about Venezuela too.

Venezuela had the highest oil reserves in the world. It has the biggest refinery in the Western hemisphere, not at full capacity now and needs moderisation, but its there.

Taking over would change the balance of power against other western powers, but also against OPEC.

Russia is fighting a war against NATO, not some Jewish weirdo who plays the piano with his penis. Losing was never an option. But thanks to the Western politicians and the fake news media, hundreds of thousands had to die

Of course it can lose.

The US lost the Vietnam war. Understanding the reasons why will help you. And the US didnt even have its own critical infrastructure attacked.

The Vietnam war? Losing the Vietnam war was not an existential threat to the US. It was simply an embarrassment (and brought about by its own citizens - your lot)

So you're comparing an unnecessary war the US had in Vietnam with a war on Russia's border against NATO?!

Tank, I thought your favourite hobby was playing armchair general..

Not how the US saw it at the time. That matters.
The US saw it was critical.
Was it unnecessary in hindsight? Yes. But thats hindsight.
Unnecessary or not, the US lost despite spending 1 trillion USD in todays money.

We can even apply the same thinking to Russia. The Ukrainian invasion was unnecessary, has vastly weakened Russia and accelerated its decline.
with a war on Russia's border against NATO?!
Ukraine is not in NATO. Prior to 2022, Russias border with NATO was Finland, the Baltics, and Turkey.

So I'm probably going to stop here unless you pick up your game.

Yes, the communists won - nothing happened. R u suggesting that the Russians should have the same fortune-telling?

Yes. Prior to 2014 there had been no NATO expansion since Albania and Croatia in 2009.

Ukraine declared neutrality in 2010 and again in 2014.

Russia still invaded. And the West did nothing.

Wheres the threat?

So Russia decided to go further in 2022. Nothing was "forced" on Russia.

Is it really all about NATO? If your neighbours want to join a self defense club against you, maybe you're the problem.

This is simply old fashioned imperialism and a grab for resources. How anyone can support the subjugation of a weaker nation by a more powerful one, I cant fathom.
Good lord, put an adult on
You cant fuck around on this stuff. Russia hardly borders NATO and certainly not where it matters, in Central Europe.

What else matters is that Vietnam and the war in Russia Ukraine are very different conflicts

Do you really think that if the US was in a conflict with Canada or Mexico it would just back off, like it did in Vietnam?

Yes. Prior to 2014 there had been no NATO expansion since Albania and Croatia in 2009.

Ukraine declared neutrality in 2010 and again in 2014.

You've been brainwashed by the fake news media to blame everything on Russia for how many years now? From the election of Trump to fantasies about Russia stomping its way across Europe like they're the new Nazis. You're simply not a serious person, you're a fake news media bot

It could be Russia.

"The Russian Ambassador to France has said that there "would be war" if NATO shoots down Russian aircraft in allied airspace."

In allied airspace no less. What would they be doing there?
