Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered hundreds of the U.S. military’s generals and admirals to gather on short notice — and without a stated reason — at a Marine Corps base in Virginia next week, sowing confusion and alarm after the Trump administration’s firing of numerous senior leaders this year.

The highly unusual directive was sent to virtually all of the military’s top commanders worldwide. The directive was issued earlier this week, as a government shutdown looms, and months after Hegseth’s team at the Pentagon announced plans to undertake a sweeping consolidation of top military commands.

In a statement Thursday, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell affirmed that Hegseth “will be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,” but he offered no additional details. Parnell, a senior adviser to the defense secretary, voiced no concerns about reporting on the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday in Quantico, Virginia.

There are about 800 generals and admirals spread across the United States and dozens of other countries and time zones. Hegseth’s order applies to all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their Navy equivalent, serving in command positions and their top enlisted advisers. Typically, these officers each oversee hundreds or thousands of rank-and-file troops.

Top commanders in conflict zones and senior military leaders stationed throughout Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region are among those expected to attend Hegseth’s meeting. The order does not apply to top military officers who hold staff positions.

None of the people who spoke with The Post could recall a defense secretary ever ordering so many of the military’s generals and admirals to assemble like this. Several said it raised security concerns.

“People are very concerned. They have no idea what it means,” one person said.
Two others expressed frustration that even many commanders stationed overseas will be required to attend. One said, this is “not how this is done.”

“You don’t call GOFOs leading their people and the global force into an auditorium outside D.C. and not tell them why/what the topic or agenda is,” this person said, using an abbreviation for general officer or flag officer.

“Are we taking every general and flag officer out of the Pacific right now?” one U.S. official said. “All of it is weird.”

at the same moment Russia has gone to maximum nuclear alert and many procedures for launching have been shortened a first in their history.

But if America were going to war that takes time and planning, lots of planning, so it will have been decided long ago and the various orders already prepared, it's how these things work, so I am not convinced that it's in preperation for a war.

Yes but there has been a war atmosphere now for a while.

Unfortunately if we are talking about the US going to war the invariable pattern is to have some high casualty false flag event, maybe not till December though.

Relax.

Remember your training; Nothing Ever Happens.

In Trump's America the Nothing Burger is the only thing on the menu.

I am convinced the plan is to have a war and probably nuclear, but how extensive or how long I have no idea. They need a war, as an excuse to introduce wartime powers, but also so that at its end they can portray their new world government apparatus as necessary for world peace.

I think @Anderson started another thread like this a few days ago and I've already forgotten what it was about, football or something

But why is that statement such a surprise? The world is bristling with nuclear weapons and its also very tense between countries with them? War came as a great shock to those in 1914, why would you assume we will dodge that bullet?

I am certainly not talking about the big intercontinental ballistic nuclear weapons, remember there are also smaller tactical ones and I think they will be used.

Why would anyone leave it at that? That's fantasy. Atomic bombs like those those dropped on Japan in WWII are literally the detonator for modern thermonuclear weapons (H-bombs)

The problem with that is that there is no way for anyone to keep it limited. Once nukes are used, a rubicon is crossed. Whats to stop gradual escalation? In that case you might as well escalate right away to all out war and try to destroy your opponent outright.

"Indeed, the adversary can never know or be sure that the intent is to keep the nuclear use limited and that the first volley will not be followed by more, especially since the first user would also be signalling readiness for more attacks to deter the adversary’s retaliation. If the adversary chooses a more elaborate response than had been envisioned by the first user, could this then remain a limited exchange?"
