The Phoenix is no more, pretty much Ireland's only political magazine. It has gone into voluntary liquidation.

It was founded by John Mulcahy who earlier had started Hibernia and the Sunday Tribune and in recent times was run by his son Aengus Mulcahy, with the assistance of the editor Paddy Prendiville and obviously some others.

A few years ago you would definitely find many things in it unavailable in any other publication, for example about intelligence agencies North and South, but nowadays its become very establishment like, with maybe not accidentally many advertisements from government bodies like the OPW.

There was a great snippet a few years back saying that the owner of Poppadoms restaurant in Sligo was a top Paki politician. Drugs and rugs are the big money exports from Pakistan, and there are no carpets in Poppadoms, so...

Early stage Paki drugs and rape gangs?

Cops know all about it, but if the politicians and judges and journos are protecting it, it takes a brave Garda to do anything.

Van Rennsburg, ethnic white South African garda, is the only brave cop I personally am aware of in the area.

Another media outlet that didn't receive government funding, sorry to see it go.

Was a regular reader for 20 years or do. Not in recent times however, every fortnight a couple of hit pieces on the far right, lots of climate stuff etc etc. Always laughed at bog cuttings reports on court cases rarely if ever featured a non national despite the plethora of examples before our judges every week

Yeah was going to mention the bog cutting piece, would be end to end non national stuff, especially Somalians dropping their pants in public for an aul w@nk, or Algerians off their head on smack waving knifes around... But at least it did shine a light on a lot of corruption and incompetence, especially around the likes of Michael Martin and his anti United Ireland stance and his attempt to rid us of the triple lock etc

It was anti establishment in the 80s but became pro establishment, which makes me think that Charles Haughey and co in the 80s were the good guys all along

Echoes of Private Eye which it modelled itself on. The magazine that once 'made children cry in the playground when they about their fathers' become an establishment lap dog, merely licencesed to snap at the ankles of whoever had already fallen out with the establishment.

I used to buy Private Eye. Years and years ago. Was Ian Hislop an insufferable shitlib or did he become more like that, or did I wise up? Either way, i wouldnt look at these days. The same for his TV show Have I got News For You.

I have this strong belief that MI5 got to him and the magazine and turned it into the atrocious litle rag that it is now. Nobody does smug little git like Hislop does, and it must six or seven years since I last watched it
