Yeah that was never true either. People can use phones to call on a plane, on the ground. If you have traveled at all, you will have seen it or done it, especially before takeoff while boarding.Even the link says they were supposedly using cell phones, which was impossible.
The changes of successful communications diminish as the plane climbs away from base stations. Hence the reliance in airphones at the time. But some planes flow so low in the end some passengers could reach base stations. Mainly though, most communications were over airphones. And this was known almost immediately after the event, no matter what MAF says.
