The Ukrainian military’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region has cost it dearly, with Kiev’s forces suffering 6,600 casualties and losing 73 tanks in their cross-border offensive, according to the latest figures published by the Russian Defense Ministry.
Ukrainian forces invaded Kursk Region on August 6, in the largest attack on internationally recognized Russian territory since the start of hostilities in February 2022. The advance was quickly halted by the Russian military, but fighting in the region continues, and Ukrainian troops still hold a number of settlements in the border area.
In the three weeks since the incursion began, Ukraine has lost more than 6,600 troops, 73 tanks, 34 infantry fighting vehicles, 62 armored personnel carriers, 432 armored fighting vehicles, and 201 other motor vehicles, the ministry announced on Tuesday.
Russian forces have also destroyed 45 artillery guns and 13 multiple-launch rocket systems, including four US-provided HIMARS launchers, the ministry added.

It is unclear how many troops the Ukrainian military sent into Kursk Region, although American media outlets claimed earlier this month that as many as 10,000 servicemen were pulled from other sectors of the front to take part in the offensive. In Tuesday’s report, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Moscow’s forces had engaged elements of Ukraine’s 22nd, 61st, and 115th mechanized brigades, 80th and 82nd air assault brigades, and 1004th Security and Service Brigade in the previous 24 hours.

Some European countries hosting Ukrainian refugees actually want to send the men home to fight and have brought this up privately, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has claimed.
Speaking at the ‘Ukraine 2024. Independence’ forum in Kiev on Tuesday, Zelensky was asked about a recent Bloomberg report that several EU countries rejected Kiev’s demands to return men of fighting age.
According to Zelensky, some Western leaders approached him privately about sending Ukrainians back, because it’s “very expensive”to support refugees who are nothing but a burden on the host countries. Saying so publicly would be “politically disadvantageous” for them, he said.
“It’s easier to raise this issue at a meeting with the president of Ukraine, and then say that the president has asked to return the Ukrainians,” Zelensky told the audience. “I am all for it, but without coercion,” he added.

Zelensky said that some 7.5 million Ukrainians have sought refuge abroad since the conflict with Russia began. UN estimates have put the number at 6.5 million.
“We need to return the adult population, children to Ukraine,” he added, explaining that Kiev needs both conscripts and workers in order to afford to “feed” 10.5 million pensioners. He insisted that this needs to be done “without coercion, so that they want to do it.”
At the same event, Prime Minister Denis Shmigal said that Ukrainian men will have to choose between working and fighting, since Kiev is facing a shortfall of tax revenue. The government estimates that some 800,000 male Ukrainians have “gone underground” for the purpose of avoiding the draft.

Many of them are working secretly so as not to draw unwanted attention from conscription officers, which means their wages are paid under the table and don’t get taxed, Shmigal explained.
The National Bank of Ukraine recently estimated that another 700,000 Ukrainians might leave the country by next year. Unless economic conditions “normalize”and soon, most of the refugees will not want to return, the bank said, urging Kiev to create jobs and rebuild the housing infrastructure damaged by the fighting.
Some EU countries have recently imposed restrictions on Ukrainian refugees, unwilling to spend dwindling welfare budgets on migrants from areas unaffected by the fighting.
 
In other words, Zitler has ballistic missiles he got from the terrorists in Washington, is going to stick 'Made In Ukraine' on them and lob them at Moscow claiming they're not American missiles so he doesn't need permission from his handlers.

Ukraine has test-fired its first domestically-produced ballistic missile, Vladimir Zelensky has said. Kiev has been asking its Western backers for months to allow it to use foreign-made missile systems to hit targets deep inside Russia.
The Ukrainian leader made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday. “What other developments are there in Ukraine? I thought it was too early to talk about it, but… there was a positive test of the first Ukrainian ballistic missile. I congratulate our military production complex on this,” he said.

Zelensky declined to provide any further details, technical specifications or even the name of the weapon, but said that he wanted the public to “know and appreciate domestic defense producers working 24/7.”
The announcement came after Kiev claimed to have used a Palyanitsa missile drone against Russian targets. While many specifications of that projectile are also secret, Ukrainian officials have said it is ground-launched and has the range of up to 700km.

However, despite Kiev’s repeated pleas, Western nations still preclude it from using their weapons to strike most targets on internationally recognized Russian territory.
Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder confirmed on Tuesday that Ukraine can use US security assistance to “defend themselves from cross-border attacks, in other words counterfire,” but nothing beyond that. Washington allowed Kiev to carry out such attacks in late May to counter a Russian offensive in Kharkov Region which Moscow said was aimed at establishing a “cordon sanitaire” to protect civilians from Ukrainian strikes.
The West’s current stance on Ukraine using foreign-made long-range weapons for strikes deep into Russia looks like “blackmail” according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. “It is an attempt to create an impression that the West wants to avoid excessive escalation, but in fact this is a ruse… We will repeat that playing with fire… is a very dangerous thing to do for grown-ups who are entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country.”

Ukraine’s demands for Western permission to strike deep into Russia with long-range Storm Shadow missiles are blackmail, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a press conference on Tuesday.
Lavrov was asked to comment on recent media reports that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has stepped up appeals to his backers to lift all restrictions on the use of Western weapons against targets on Russian territory.
“This is blackmail, it is an attempt to create an impression that the West wants to avoid excessive escalation, but in fact this is a ruse,” Lavrov said, stressing “The West does not want to avoid escalation. The West is asking for trouble, to put it bluntly. I reckon that this is already obvious to everyone.”
Lavrov further warned that the West would be embarking on a dangerous course if it expanded authorization for the use of its weapons.
“For a long time, we have been hearing these speculations about allowing the use of not only Storm Shadow, but also US long-range missiles...”
“We will repeat that playing with fire – and they are like children playing with matches – is a very dangerous thing to do for grown-ups who are entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country,” Lavrov stated.

Ukraine has lobbied for months to use Storm Shadows against targets inside Russia. Kiev wants to launch the missiles at Russia’s heartland as “demonstration” attacks, The Guardian reported on Saturday. The outlet cited a senior Ukrainian official as saying Russia would consider negotiating only if it believed Ukraine had the ability “to threaten Moscow and St Petersburg.”
Storm Shadow missiles were developed primarily by an Anglo-French collaboration and are now manufactured by European joint venture MBDA. At the same time, some of components are supplied by the US, which means the White House also has to agree to their use inside Russia. The Biden administration has so far refused to do so.
Zelensky has previously urged the West not to fear a potential escalation by Moscow, and has said that Kiev’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region proves that Moscow has no “red lines.”
The assault, which started on August 6, is the largest of its kind on Russian territory since hostilities erupted between Moscow and Kiev in 2022. According to the Defense Ministry in Moscow, over 6,600 Ukrainian troops have been killed in the incursion and around 800 pieces of military hardware have been destroyed.
Russia has alleged that Ukrainian troops have been using Western-supplied weapons in the attack on Kursk Region – claims that have seemingly been supported by reports in the Western media.
Lavrov said last week that “Zelensky would never have decided [to attack Russian territory] if the United States had not instructed him to do this.”

A Russian warplane has bombed a location in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, which was used to hide a Western-donated HIMARS rocket system and munitions, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Wednesday, sharing footage of the strike.
The settlement where the incident took place was identified by the military as Kondratovka, a village some 3km from Russia’s Kursk Region. Ukrainian forces poured across the border earlier this month in what Kiev now claims to be an operation to establish a “buffer zone” on Russian soil.
The strike was apparently conducted during the night at a cluster of hangar-type buildings located in the western part of Kondratovka. Filmed from the air, the footage shows what appears to be a gliding bomb hitting the target and causing a massive explosion.
The ministry stated that the Russian Air Force had destroyed a HIMARS launcher, enough munitions to fire six barrages, a loader vehicle, and a support car. The wheeled system is compatible with the tracked M270 MLRS and normally carries a single pod with six standard rockets, compared to two pods for the heavier launcher.

Poland has sent to Ukraine all the weapons it can without sacrificing its own security, Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Tuesday
The senior official, who also serves as the country’s defense minister, was reacting to remarks made earlier in the day by Vladimir Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader had asked for Polish fighter jets and for Warsaw to shoot down Russian missiles over Western Ukraine, although he acknowledged that both requests were unlikely to be met anytime soon.
“The Polish government, both our government and the government of our predecessors, have donated billions of dollars’ worth of equipment to Ukraine. That’s all we were able to donate,” Kosiniak-Kamysz told the national news agency PAP later in the day when asked about Zelensky’s remarks.
It is Zelensky’s job to bargain with foreign governments for more assistance, the Polish minister said, but for Poland its own security is the top priority.

Polish President Andrzej Duda, a political ally of the previous conservative government, highlighted last week the scale of both military and non-military aid provided to Ukraine, saying that the country had spent roughly 3.3% of its GDP on it.
Among the items Poland has not donated is its remaining fleet of Soviet MiG 29 fighter jets. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in early July that the aircraft were needed for protecting Poland and would have to be replaced before being made available to Kiev.
Kosiniak-Kamysz told PAP that the F-35 fighter jets that Poland ordered from the US won’t replace the MiGs until at least 2026.
He also reiterated that Poland will not engage Russian projectiles at Kiev’s request unless other NATO nations overcome their skepticism about the idea. Warsaw first rejected the Ukrainian proposal ahead of this year's summit of the US-led bloc in mid-July.
Moscow considers the Ukraine conflict to be a proxy war waged by the US and its allies against Russia. Russian officials have called the stakes existential and have emphasized that the country will not yield.
