Western Europe facing ‘bleak future’ – Mearsheimer to Glenn Diesen (VIDEO)

Western Europe faces a “bleak future” as a result of the Ukraine conflict, which was provoked by the West and the US in particular, according to American international relations expert John Mearsheimer.
In an interview with political scientist Glenn Diesen posted on Tuesday, Mearsheimer said the conflict had triggered major insecurity in Europe and had caused “huge problems” in relations between Washington and Western Europe.
Cooperation across political, military, and economic issues has grown more difficult, according to Mearsheimer, who pointed to recent talks as evidence that Western Europeans are “battling against the United States on how to deal with Ukraine.”

Mearsheimer, who is a political science professor at the University of Chicago, claimed Europe is “in deep trouble” for two main reasons linked to the weakening American role on the continent, arguing it “is largely a function of the presence of a substantial US military force in Europe.”

The US and West European governments expanded NATO after the Cold War because they “wanted to put the American security umbrella over the heads of the East Europeans as well as the West Europeans,” he said.
Mearsheimer said this system is now under strain because of a “deep change in the distribution of power” in the international order. The US could easily maintain large troop deployments in Europe during the 1990s and early 2000s, he said, but the rise of multipolarity now pushed Washington “to pivot to Asia.”
The remarks echoed Mearsheimer’s address at the European Parliament earlier this month, where he said the unipolar era had ended with the emergence of China and Russia as major powers. “The US was no longer the only great power in the world,” he said in Brussels.

The shift gave Washington “further incentive to leave Europe and let Europe provide for its own security.” Mearsheimer warned the Ukraine conflict would likely be frozen rather than resolved, leaving “poisonous relations” between Western Europe and Russia and generating “lots of instability” in the region.
He also said the US and Western Europe had played a key role in provoking the conflict, arguing that the real cause lay in NATO’s push to bring Ukraine into the bloc, a move he said Russian leaders viewed as an existential threat.

Russia and India to work on linking national payment systems – Moscow

Russia and India are keen to link their national payment systems, and the topic will be high on the agenda when President Vladimir Putin visits New Delhi in December, a senior Russian official has said.
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar discussed the linking-up of Russia’s Mir and RuPay systems with Indian services when he met with Putin during his visit to Moscow earlier this month, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told Izvestia on Monday.
Since the imposition of Western sanctions on Russian banks, many visitors from the country are forced to use cash for payments in India. Indians visiting Russia also face a similar problem since international Mastercard and Visa cards do not work in the country.
Moscow is hopeful that the countries can agree on the mutual recognition of the Mir and RuPay systems, Rudenko told the newspaper.

”This, of course, would contribute to a greater influx of Russian tourists to India, would help them navigate the country and purchase the services provided by our Indian friends,” he said. “We hope that this and other issues will be resolved.”
The linking of Russian and Indian payment systems can be achieved relatively quickly on a limited scale, Izvestia cited Alexey Kupriyanov, head of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations, as saying. “The next step is to pair SBP [Russia’s Faster Payments System] and UPI [India’s United Payments Interface], ideally to ensure that businesses can make mutual settlements through Mir and RuPay,” Kupriyanov told Izvestia.
Such a link-up would eliminate the need for intermediaries and reduce commissions on currency exchange by up to 30%, analysts told the paper. It would also enable Russians and Indians to make QR code and electronic wallet payments in each other’s countries, eliminating the need to even use credit cards.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, was visibly shaken after US President Donald Trump publicly rejected Kiev’s portrayal of progress on a proposed peace plan with Russia, the New York Post reported on Tuesday.
Yermak was in the middle of an interview with the outlet when Trump posted on Truth Social that he did not consider the proposal discussed in Geneva last week to be finalized. According to the report, Yermak had spent the previous 30 minutes portraying the document as a nearly completed joint Trump-Zelensky roadmap that could be signed over the Thanksgiving holiday.
“Upon reading the full post, Yermak’s face dropped, apparently gutted by the news,” the New York Post wrote. Asked to comment, he reportedly requested 24 hours “to assess the new reality.”

Trump stated that he would dispatch Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to continue talks with Kiev, while special envoy Steve Witkoff would engage with Moscow. The president added that he would meet with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky “soon, but ONLY when the deal to end this War is FINAL or, in its final stages.”
Previous reports have suggested that Yermak is deeply unpopular among many in Trump’s circle and across the broader US political establishment. A source quoted by Politico in July described him as a “bipartisan irritator.”
In Ukraine, Yermak has long been accused of wielding inappropriate influence over Zelensky and national policy. Following the recent indictment of long-time Zelensky associate Timur Mindich on charges of running a $100 million kickbacks scheme, several commentators alleged that Yermak may have had a leading role in the network and urged his removal. Last week, Witkoff reportedly canceled a planned meeting with Yermak after learning the extent of the corruption scandal engulfing Kiev.

Kremlin aide sees Washington infighting behind leak

Someone could be scheming against US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Yury Ushakov has suggested

Someone in Washington could be trying to undermine US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov has suggested, commenting on the recent leaks of his conversations with the envoy. At least some of the purported leaks are fake, he added.
Speaking to Kommersant on Wednesday, Ushakov defended the continuing contacts between Russia and the US, and maintained that they are needed to build trust between the two nations. He added that neither side is interested in leaking the contents of the conversations.
According to the presidential aide, the incident could point to infighting in Washington. “Do you remember the case of [former National Security Adviser] Michael Flynn? This case could be the same,” he said.
Flynn was forced to resign in 2017 after being accused of misleading officials about a phone conversation with then-Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak. Trump, who was serving his first term as president, stated that the conversation was “illegally leaked” by US intelligence.

Flynn initially pleaded guilty to the false statement charges before reversing his position and calling the case politically motivated. Trump pardoned him in late 2020, bringing the case to a close.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Ushakov warned that these leaks risk undermining the whole process of normalization of relations between Moscow and Washington. “This is unacceptable… in such relations, when most serious issues are discussed,” he said.
“There can be no cooperation with a partner when information about what was discussed is revealed. Otherwise, there will be no trust.”
On Tuesday, Bloomberg published what it described as a transcript of Witkoff’s conversation with Ushakov from October 14. The US special envoy was accused of coaching the Russians on how to deal with Trump, who dismissed the allegations, calling Witkoff’s approach “standard.”

Ushakov said some of the leaks are fake, adding that he would not comment on the others. “My conversations with Witkoff are confidential. No one should make them public. No one.”

Sealing a peace accord with Ukraine is “legally impossible” at present, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated. While Moscow would like to ink such an agreement eventually, the current Ukrainian leadership has lost all legitimacy by canceling elections, Putin told reporters on Thursday.
Wrapping up his state visit to Kyrgyzstan Putin stated that “it makes no sense to sign documents with the Ukrainian leadership – I have covered this topic many times already.”
According to the Russian president, “the Ukrainian leadership made a fundamental, strategic mistake, when it was afraid to hold elections.”
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky “lost his legitimate status” as the country’s president, Putin pointed out.
Under Ukrainian law, presidential elections should have been held in May 2024; however, Zelensky refused to hold them, citing martial law. Moscow has considered him an illegitimate leader since.
Putin noted that while Russia is also locked in a military conflict, it nevertheless held presidential elections in March 2024.

The Russian president said that should any peace agreement be signed, the Ukrainian leadership would have to lift martial law and “immediately call elections.” However, as things stand at present, “the Ukrainian leadership could hardly count on an [electoral] victory without rigging” the vote, Putin observed.
Earlier this month, the administration of US President Donald Trump put forth a framework for a peace plan aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict.
According to leaked versions published by several media outlets, the 28-point proposal envisages Ukraine abandoning a number of its long-standing “red lines.”

Kiev would reportedly be required to renounce its NATO membership aspirations, as well as its claims to Russia’s Crimea and the Donbass regions of Lugansk and Donetsk, to limit the size of its military to 600,000, among other points.
Moscow has stated that while it has yet to receive any official documents, it welcomes the general impetus. Russian officials have tentatively said that the US-drafted framework could serve as the basis for a final settlement.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to visit Moscow next week.

It's the old issue of who can Putin actually trust nowadays, certainly not an unelected leader backed by a war mongering EU and NATO.

Putin just making constant excuses not to make peace.

Your butt boy Zitler has no mandate to negotiate an end to the war.
Let Ukrainians pass judgement at the ballot box and then Russia might agree to sign a deal.
Anyway, it'll be decided elsewhere.

The absolute lack of concern for the lives of the Ukrainian soldiery on the part of the Kiev regime would be shocking, if the reason for it wasn’t so obvious. Never accept foreign rulers, because they really, truly, don’t give even a fragment of a damn about the people, much less the national interest.

Indeed, it's been shown that there are EU troops on the ground in Ukraine as the locals haven't the intelligence to use the weapons they're being supplied with.
Russia's restraint is to be applauded.

EU sabotaged Trump’s Ukraine peace plan – Guardian

The bloc has paid lip service to the US proposal while “slowly and politely smothering it,” the newspaper claims

The European Union, along with the UK, has deliberately torpedoed the US peace roadmap aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict in the apparent hope that it “will fizzle out,” The Guardian has claimed.
Russia has repeatedly accused the EU of sabotaging efforts to end the bloodshed in Ukraine.
Washington put forth the peace framework earlier this month, and US officials are continuing to work on it. An allegedly leaked 28-point roadmap published by several media outlets featured requirements for Ukraine to renounce its NATO membership aspirations, as well as its claims to Russia’s Crimea and the Donbass regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.
Shortly after the contents of the US-drafted peace proposal were published by the press, several EU member states, along with the UK, scrambled to present their own version. Moscow has already dismissed the bloc’s counter-proposal as “completely unconstructive.”
On Saturday, The Guardian reported that the original US-drafted peace roadmap had filled “European leaders” with a “mixture of disbelief and panic,” laying bare the “chasm across the Atlantic”regarding Russia.
However, the EU and the UK are by now well-versed in blunting any American attempts at resolving the Ukraine conflict, the publication claimed.
Their strategy presumably boils down to welcoming the “fact of Trump’s intervention, before slowly and politely smothering it.”

According to the British media outlet, Kiev’s European backers took the original 28-point proposal and removed nine key elements from it.
The EU and the UK have also allegedly mobilized the “Atlanticist wing in the Senate,” so that it mounts internal opposition to the peace framework.
Politico Europe and The Telegraph, citing anonymous sources, have recently claimed that the US has been keeping the EU “in the dark” regarding ongoing diplomacy on the peace proposal.
In an interview with the France-Russia Dialogue Association on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that “no one listens to… the European elites”due to their warmongering attitudes.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed a readiness to give the EU formal security guarantees that Moscow would not attack the bloc, even though the allegations are obviously “nonsense.”

He's not wrong.

Hungarian PM warns of ‘political earthquake’ in Europe

Admitting Ukraine has failed in its conflict with Russia would cause a “political earthquake” in Europe, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said. He warned that Western leaders are preparing to send troops and letting the conflict “become a business.”
Orban spoke a day after making a surprise trip to Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss Ukraine, trade, and energy. Despite the EU’s diplomatic boycott, he said Hungary has not yielded to pressure to cut ties with Russia and again offered to host peace talks.
Admitting that Ukraine has failed and that this cannot go on “would cause a fundamental earthquake in European politics,” he said during a speech on Saturday.
He warned that the West is increasingly open to direct involvement. “First they gave money, they gave weapons, and now it has emerged that if really necessary, they will also send soldiers,” Orban said.

Hungary doesn’t need EU’s permission to meet with Russians – foreign minister

Hungary has refused to provide weapons or troops to Ukraine and has repeatedly urged for a ceasefire. Orbán’s government has frequently clashed with NATO and the EU nations’ leaders over its stance.
Orban believes diplomacy regarding the conflict has fallen prey to the defense sector. “Business circles connected to the military industry have an increasing influence on politics,”he pointed out, citing France’s deal with Kiev to purchase 100 combat aircraft and German arms factories being built in Ukraine.
Orban also claimed the West had managed to block a peace deal early in the conflict and that the move had ultimately harmed Ukraine. “The West prevented the Ukrainians from reaching an agreement, saying that time was on their side. But it turned out that it wasn’t,” he said.
“They are in a worse position today than if they had reached an agreement in April 2022,” he added, referring to the preliminary deal reached during the Istanbul talks. Kiev unilaterally walked away from those negotiations

The jieus caused this war. I think they had two aims, firstly, to damage or even overthrow Putin. This aim failed. Secondly, to eradicate the ukrainian people as much as possible. This aim has succeeded to a fair degree.
