Exactly so. The closing speed of the two craft would have been around 300-400mph at least. Hitting a wall of fuel at that speed was going to bend something but not destroy the craft, allowing it to be recovered in one piece. Clever move by the Russians and some skilful piloting alright.

This is exactly the rational explained to me by a Soviet Russian from Uzbekistan a couple of months ago.

Putin is getting stronger by killing off Russian convicts and other assorted miscreants. That is why Wagner is doing most of the fighting and does not have to pay only those that survive, likely just the owners and a few buddies.

A genius tactic while killing Ukrainians in quantity.
