The Russian forces incredibly poor judgement led them up a blind alley. Because the AFU were happy to give ground, the Russians slowly advanced, and the more they advanced, the less they could stop or retreat...as this was basically the only advances they were making along the entire front. Even when it became obvious they could not do an encirclement and really should have pulled their forces out for attacks elsewhere. When Wagner took over, the mistake was fully formed and crystallised.
Girkin is not the only one in Russia either who understands this was a massive, bone headed, mistake.
