General Chat in The Marcus Lounge.

On what? Whether your atheistic Dad indoctrinated you with your atheist beliefs?
No, on the subject

As you've mentioned, I'm from a broken home, so my father wasn't that much of an influence (nor was he an atheist as you imagine atheists to be), I just realised, as a child, that religion was man-invented (and not an accurate prescription for God)

Isn't it instructive that nobody brings up the subject of religion more on this board than AN2 - an avowed atheist.

Every time I log in he's looking to get a reaction from the same one or two posters- usually by posting videos of the most insufferable "public figure" atheists like Dawkins or (even worse) Ricky Gervais mocking religious people.

It's all very repetitive and immature - not to mention deeply ignorant of the human condition. Do these people get a kick out of insulting and mocking devout elderly ladies who go to church on a Sunday and get great comfort from thinking they'll see their deceased relatives again?

Things have got so bad lately that I've noticed poor auld Myles O'Reilly going down the same path. Is AN2 recruiting him via private messages?

R u sure about that? 🤔

an avowed atheist.
An avowed atheist, what does that mean?

Again, r u sure about that?

You have nothing of any interest to say but can you not be an adult and at least make factual statements?

This is a bigger indignant, anti-atheist dump you've taken on the site than your usual

Btw, I think that's demonstrably wrong enough that I've it made it my new sig

As a general rule of thumb, James is deeply disturbed by people who think they have a soul.

Yup, nailed it on the head. Always utterly ignorable trite.

Life has not treated James well, ergo he doesn’t like life and the people that occupy it.

I know it’s laughable.

Imagine the two drunks in their private exchange… “You say this, then I’ll reply with this…” 😂😂

jimmy's religion is atheism, he's like one of those dodgy preachers ya see in the USA......but pissed most of the time.:ROFLMAO:
I don't have a religion, Woof

That's the theistic way of thinking about atheism

It’s the immaterial part of you that asks that question; your body never wondered about anything.
Worst answer ever 🤣

Perhaps stop thinking about (religious) buzzwords such as materialism / materialistic..

This is a very religious site

Perhaps that's why so many people here fold like a cheap suitcase or throw their toys out of the pram under the slightest bit of scrutiny? 🤔

Yes, jimmy, your obsession with religion is well documented.
You post about it religiously.(y)

It really doesn't make much sense for you to say that considering I'm not religious and I don't know that much about it albeit I think I know enough to know that it isn't for me. Like I said, I don't think it's an accurate prescription for God, in fact, I think it's palpably ridiculous to believe in any one religion. Change my mind

James, clearly you operate on a shallow level of existence. However, you should know that you have a soul, it is the non-material essence of a person. The seat of consciousness, identity, and moral agency.

While the brain supports thoughts and perception, the soul is what makes you uniquely you, something science can observe indirectly but cannot fully explain.

I think I'm more thoughtful than you are

I told you, no religious buzzwords, please

The seat of consciousness, identity, and moral agency.
I'm confused, I have a soul (even though I don't know it) and I'm an atheist.. So why do you religious people keep on telling us atheists that we can't have moral agency if we're atheists? 🤔

If the soul is an illusion, then explain why people who are clinically dead, with no measurable brain activity, consistently report vivid and verifiable experiences, as documented in peer-reviewed studies like Pim van Lommel’s Lancet paper on Near Death Experiences or the AWARE study led by Dr. Sam Parnia; without a soul, consciousness simply has no business surviving brain death.

This appears to be your second attempt at steering the conversation into me denying the existence of a soul

I would be interested in your answer to my last question, to reiterate; You say that I have soul, which is responsible for moral agency but religious people say that atheists don't have that. Did you slip up? 🤔

Your question was ignored because it’s a silly strawman. Everyone has a soul despite what their believes are. The soul is what makes someone rational, capable of free will and hence, morally responsible for their actions. It’s what the Catholic Church refers to as ‘the natural law’. So, unbelievers can act morally because they participate in reason.

Now, that that’s out of the way….if consciousness is entirely reducible to brain activity, how do you account for rigorously documented death experiences, such as those in the Lancet study by Pim van Lommel; where patients reported accurate perceptions of their surroundings during periods of flatlined EEG and absent cortical activity. In other words, how can veridical conscious experience occur in the total absence of measurable brain function and why is there such commonality in these death experiences regardless of the cultural or religious background of the person who dies?

R u denying that religious people say that atheists don't have moral agency because why would they (atheists)?

Is a belieber doing something different and if so, what?

See this is why people don’t bother trying to engage with you. You’re worse than a bot. Always dodging everything. Totally disingenuous.

I have explained my position. Asking me about what some of the other 7 billion people on the planet think is moronic.
Is a belieber doing something different and if so, what?
The difference is how moral actions are ordered. Unbelievers may act in accordance with natural law, but without faith and sanctifying grace. They lack the supernatural virtues that order those actions toward eternal beatitude. You won’t like or even understand that answer, but there you go.

You’re on your final warning. Answer the question or bugger off.

There is genuinely something wrong with you.

Anyhoo, now that you’ve got that nonsense off your chest…

lofl What's "nonsense" about it, you oblivious fool? I'm literally addressing the biggest insult theists have for atheists, why is that nonsense?

I asked you what you think a soul is

I didn't ask you why you think that it's proof of God

Any chance the alco can take his religious obsession to a separate thread?
This is fucking ridiculous now, it's basically spamming and shitposting.

That's a genuine question. But you fall down immediately by stating there's an afterlife of eternal torture because an 18 year old lad once wore a Johnny,

Can't you see the difference Sir?
