Why are there so few trees? Was the Irish countryside always like this, or have people terraformed it?
Good question? The aul landlords chopped down much of the wild forests centuries ago and intensively farmed the place to feed an 8 million population here and sent the bulk of product abroad. The locals inherited a broken land and divided culture . . . i don't know the details but Tree planting is arbitrary although the lordy's lands are typically well wooded. there should be natural hedging but Line dancing cowboys brought home barbed wire which did away with hedge maintenance and planting.
Many sons went abroad as did the half the villages. Like the Farmer there said in the Vid - money has become tight - always was.

One thing I noticed is that there is no natural erosion control around those courseways. No binding grasses to form root mats to make the soil cling together. Big problem over time.

Also they haven't had to worry about erosion because the flooding wasn't so bad so regularly (But maybe ask MAFish about that;))

That's a shame, the way I understand things hedgerows are really important for the biosphere in Europe. Much prettier than the devil's rope, too.
Flooding like that is every other week in QLD. That's actually really mild compared to what we get here and I regularly see kids out on bodyboards in creeks flooding at that level, the little shits--it's very dangerous because all the bad noodles get caught in the wash. Last year and early into this year it has been particularly shockingly wet however but the big difference is heat I suppose. I'd wager on sheep stations here when it rains like that, there's far less chance of Lambs dying purely due to higher temps. Different deal.

Fuck everything about animal production, really. Seems like an awful slog with worse margins, huge amounts of risk and compliance. This is why I'm in agriculture. Well, I say that, but I don't consider myself a real farmer. I know real farmers. They spend 80K per year on Fertilizers. I'd say the term "Primary producer" fits what I do more or less. I'll stop short of the term "Hobby Farming". I'm a fair bit deeper into than that.

Still, weird seeing mountain ranges with no trees on them, that's depressing. Also odd that they are so visible so far away. See, in Australia most of the trees are eucalypts, which release eucalyptus oil into the atmosphere. So from a distance, they appear to be in a kind of blueish haze.

That doesn't sound physically demanding, but it does sound so fucking boring that I'd rather do something backbreaking if it was even 1/10th more interesting.
Boring yes and hard work.
Stones was a term for things that were the size of bricks to blocks.
The fields were ploughed for years with old shallow ploughs. Then with the modern ploughs they deeper nd brought everything.
Mind I got lovely wall's for the garden when that's what I needed to fo.

There's something so satisfying about a freshly de-stoned field ready to be levelled and re-seeded 🙂

Lady Willow, you might be able to help me.

I've got a bush at the front of the house which was a pain in the arse to climb up and keep trimmed at the top. So I decided to just cut around four feet off it.

Now its shaped like a bucket.

How can I get it rounded off at the top so that it looks circular again rather than a boiled egg that's just had the top knocked off?

Two fluid ounces of virgin's pee, she must be over 20 and below 24 years old. Apply every day for three days in dry weather.

It's been a cool April, very little warm sun, maybe one of the coolest on record, we won't be hearing about that from RTE though, unless they weave it into some magical tale about extreme weather events.

1st of June and the cloud canopy rolled back to reveal a sunny blue sky (a rare thing in the last 2 weeks) but today the dimming canopy is back - Even with yesterday's sun in June it was cool in the NW as it is today. Cool & Dim.🥶

. . . .June 1 is the first day of the meteorological summer and people all over Ireland have been dreaming of a mini-heatwave and warm hazy sunshine lasting for several days if not weeks.
Sadly, it looks like June is set to disappoint with Met Eireann even warning of the potential for "spot flooding" in certain parts of the country.

In its latest extended range forecast update, Met Eireann, says people should expect part of June to be "unsettled".
Concerning Monday June 17 to Sunday June 23 Met Eireann says: "Low pressure is indicated to dominate for week three, allowing more unsettled conditions to develop. Temperatures will likely be around average in the north and northwest and coastal counties of the east and south, however elsewhere temperatures are likely to be slightly below average. Above average rainfall is expected, which may lead to some spot flooding."

The first two weeks of June will see average temperatures for the south and east of Ireland but everywhere else "will be cooler than average" the state forecaster declared.

Met Eireann added: "Low pressure is signalled to influence our weather for week two. Temperatures will likely be around average in many areas, but parts of the midlands and southwest and west are likely to see slightly below average temperatures. Rainfall is signalled to be above average countrywide, which may lead to some spot flooding."

Meanwhile, the much anticipated bank holiday weather forecast looked promising earlier this week but according to Met Eireann, cloud cover looks likely to spoil the party.

It was hoped that Sunday and Monday would bring end-to-end sunshine with temperatures predicted to hit 22°C however a concentrated band of cloud cover looks set to be the thorn in Ireland's side over the coming days.

Met Eireann says the frustrating cloud cover looks set to continue into Tuesday as well.

"Starting off mostly cloudy on Tuesday with some light rain or drizzle spreading eastwards. Brightening up from the northwest with a few showers following. Highest temperatures 14°C to 18°C with moderate to fresh northwest winds.

"Wednesday will be a cool, breezy day with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures 11°C to 15°C with moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

"Thursday is going to be another cool, showery day, with sunny spells. Light to moderate westerly winds, with highest temperatures 11°C to 16°C."

So there you go Folks. Another Fecked Summer for Ireland. That's 3 years in a row, plus many before that too.

21:30 on a dim Sunday evening, a touch of drizzle but what is a major surprise is the blast of fog as one blows out breath at the back door outside! Winters breath on a summers evening 🥶🌬️

It's sounds like a personal message that only Val could understand.
Do you think it's weather related?

And you accuse me of posting indecipherable bullshit? Well that has to be one the most impenetrable posts on this forum to date.

But thanks anyway, its a valuable contribution.

A witch hunter with a bone to pick, jumped up into the wheel arch of a Ryanair jet as it took off from scammaruinya and hitched a ride to Ireland to take advantage of freebies and local politics among locations of wondrous interest.

At first it sounded like a whiskey soaked pilot spilling the beans on SRM.:geek:

Anyway, here's a little up-date on the weather on the ground today . . . it's largely cloudy, cool and raining every most days and when there's some sun and blue sky one still feels a cool breeze from the NW.

May actually was considerably dry with river levels dropping low for a few weeks, t'was warm pleasant weather like early summer should be but now it appears like that was our summer:eek:

Apparently we just had the warmest May in Ireland!

That's real climate change as seen on this thread - 8 months of winter, inject 3 weeks of summer in May and then - back to dim, wet, cool weather for June, perhaps a few warm days along the way and then a cloudy dim washout for July August again before the coming winter starts again in mid September or October if you're lucky.
