Collett is encouraging young people to publicly embrace far-right politics as his movement radicalises lonely school pupils on smartphones in their bedrooms.
Collett has a following of teenage boys attracted to him as a paternal figure who encourages them to go to the gym or ride mountain bikes.
A counterextremism expert working with young people said: “Some of the stuff he says is cutting through. Patriotic Alternative at the moment are the biggest propagandists of the Great Replacement Theory.
“Collett is charismatic, influential. He was an early adopter of social media. A lot of our work is young isolated boys. They struggle with peer-group friendships and self-esteem so they look at role models. They often have chaotic family lives and want a paternal figure.
Patriotic Alternative was “using modern technology and the internet in order to spread their insidious ideology. Support is growing in numbers, especially among younger people.”
Even veterans of the far-right have expressed concern that Collett is influencing young people whose futures may be ruined by being branded as extremists.
Nick Griffin, the former leader of the BNP, claimed Collett was responsible for inciting “a bunch of stupid kids to break the public order and anti-terror laws”.
Eddy Butler, a former BNP activist who spent years collaborating with Collett, said: “I would imagine the average age of his followers is under 21. He is using or misusing their youthful enthusiasm.
James Dowson, a hardcore Ulster loyalist, asked a conference of 80 Irish alt-right students in Belfast to list their favourite political leaders: “Mark Collett was number one. He won by a large margin.” He said the students “were all Nietzschians, they were all Nazis, they were obsessed with Jew-hating. Fanatical Jew-baiters, I am not used to that.”
Collett has made hundreds of appearances on podcasts and livestreams and is a regular collaborator with David Duke, a former grand wizard of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan…”.
