Great, but also Pyrrhic. Among many things I missed (and regret) on my trip to Ireland were a visit to Brian's tomb and venerating Plunkett's head in Drogheda.

As a side note, I'd be pretty well versed on the geography etc of Ireland but I hadn't realised Meath & Monaghan shared a border. Looked at the map there and its about a 3 mile stretch.

Remembering The Battle Of Ballinamuck

On September 8th 1798 the combined French & Irish forces under the command of General Humbert fought the British at Ballinamuck.

The combined French & Irish forces had previously seen victories at Killala, Ballina, Castlebar and Collooney but were now marching to meet up with rebels in Longford & Westmeath with two large British forces totalling about 26,000 troops in hot pursuit.

By September 7th it was clear they were surrounded, the rebels in Longford & Westmeath had been defeated and were weary of the constant skirmishes with the British, so Humbert decided to make a stand at the town of Ballinamuck in County Longford.

On September 8th the battle began with a short artillery duel and a British dragoon charge on the Irish rebels when French lines were reached Humbert decided to surrender after about an hour of fighting.

But the Irish rebels led by Colonel Teeling fought on but were attacked by British infantry & charged by the dragoons, which scattered the Irish rebels who were ruthlessly pursued into a bog where they were bayoneted or drowned.

The battle resulted in the deaths of 500 Irish rebels and 200 taken prisoner but later hanged including Wolf Tone's brother Matthew Tone. The French were treated as prisoners of war except for their officers who were Irish.

In total 96 French officers and 746 soldiers were taken prisoner and brought to Dublin by canal and traded for English prisoners of war.

When a Cannon was dismantled from its mount near the end of Battle one lad summoned three other boys to put it up on their shoulders.

"Quick lads or Ireland is lost" he shouted

The Cannon recoiled and all four were killed.

I suggest for a few posts we could stay with the battles that our very own "conservative movement" have already fought?

There's no need to try and pin our flag to the mast of all these ancient battles, for haven't our lads written our very own mythology?

Aren't the stories of their exploits already out there, to be told around the fire by our future generations?
