Discovered by accident from reading YouTube comments that Chris Cross of Ultravox died last March at the age of 71.
Got a bit mixed up there. I thought Chris Cross was the American guy who played the double guitar thing and sang "Ride like the wind" but since found out there's another English Chris Cross that played with Ultravox.
Both the guys in Ultravox and the American Chris Cross are/were phenomenal musicians.

Edna O Brien RIP.
Quiet a fearless Woman.
93 !
she figured out something early on that if you used the truth to fuel whatever you had to do in life it gave tremendous energy and the truth would literally set you free .
it seem a contradiction that she was our greatest FICTION writer however the fiction was a series of well observed truths .
she was known by her peers who were very famous people of high achievement as a person of integrity and good humor.
Ireland was in the grip of our fascist church which allowed only its commentary and no other as it believed it was entitled to possess the mental state of the nation for its own purposes and profit .
the treatment meted out to her which caused her to leave Ireland was extreme .
but we have now learned more about her and more about her accusers / book burners and as a result---- what was done to her cannot be done anymore .
she served Ireland in more ways than one and we are richer for her presence and life's work.
the guardian gives a good obituary and the comment that this little country has dominated the English literary world to an astonishing degree for our population is made and read now with pride -- good luck Edna in your travels from here on we wish you well.

I never heard of her, but I looked her up after reading your post mentioning book burning and "fascist church". Lo and behold she is an abortionist and feminist, writing about women's sexual liberation and the big bad church. Pro-immigration too by the looks of it. Oh and she married a Jew.

There now in writing i am able to find the good in people and admire their talent i even though i would disagree with much of what they believe in --
for example Sinead o Connor would admit to being mad and having little control of her own mind and of making her children's life hell .
yet i cannot deny her the enormous talent and great joy she has brought to people all around the world with the honesty of her music.
i had a German Jewish uncle who i rented the attic flat of his home for 3 years in streatham in London .
i learned a great deal about Jewish people as a result and his intellect and ability were astonishing -he could speak 11 languages 5 fluently 1 expertly .
his ability would shock you and the way he would read something as if his life depended on it and commit it to memory instantly no matter how complex .
the manner of his preparation in the morning was for an Irish person extreme,
and the perfection of appearance was impressive as it was designed to be --in his view how could the world take him seriously if he did not take himself seriously.
he looked at us like we were children and he was right --when in a pub he would never buy a drink except for his wife --he did not approve of the Irish round system and found it domineering to be forced to buy drink for people he did not know and it appeared to be tasteless to do so and childish of the Irish to indulge in this behavior --he would laugh at us like children and say ""YOU BEAT ME TO IT "" and he could not care less what you thought of him he knew he was right and the rest of the world did not do this .
there are countless people i do not emulate but i have to admit they are vastly more talented at what they do than i --this is not a crime .

It will be very interesting = = What comes out about Cliff Richard after he dies = = Might well be another Jimmy Saville = = Maybe Not quite as busy as Jimmy Saville.
I had an interesting conversation with a fellow while on holiday a few years back who, as a gay active in the London scene, or so he claimed, had heard plenty of stories around squeaky clean Cliff. One of which was that he keeps the number of some very sharp lawyers on his desk which is why we hear so little about his private past.

Myles needn't worry, my involvement with said fellow was purely social, he was though an intelligent man with a colourful past that went far beyond simply shagging rent boys.

Rip
Feisty old wan who got treated pretty shoddily by the establishment and those she knew.
I'd love to see you expand on that one.
By the time she reached middle age, I would have said she was adored by the establishment and loved by those around her.

Richard Branson seems to be hanging around a long time but he is 'only' 74, I keep thinking he must be older, so something of a long shot.

I doubt that he took the jab being an insider, despite his penchant for appearing the radical which was always something to get the teenagers excited enough to buy his crap.
