3. Giving Ukraine an oppurtunity to surrender and bring a lasting peace.

If it is 1, then oil is very close to the price needed to collapse the US and even more so Europe. Note how he has not stopped selling oil or gas. He with a slow conflict can drive it to $250 easily.

If Russia is to become Ukraine's suzerain (as was the case with Finland during the Cold War), laying waste to major cities and having civilian bodies pile up will neither foster good will nor will the optics be good. That's why he's been pulling punches.

Midwit Ukrainians need first to turn a deaf ear to Zelensky because he's a clown and an American toady who takes all cues from the State Dept. and spooks. They'll realize they were duped and that Zelensky doesn't give a Tinker's damn about the real possibilty of Kiev and other large cities being turned into facsimiles of Grozny.

Maybe Putin wanted the pressure to be hunger pangs which is a hell of a lot better than death and destruction.

It gives a possible reason as to why Putin has so far played with kid's gloves. In his plan, he already has the eastern provinces, not just two but everything east of the Dnieper River, and he does not wish to feed any insurrgency. Have a quick gander.

I have watched this one. Reaction to the Ukraine crisis is being run by ignorance and emotion. One third of the worlds food supply
could be cut off.

Getting decent reporting on the situation is next to impossible. Hopefully by weekend the picture will be more clear.
If the true target is the western economies, then Putin has already won.
