He is being waked at his house from 3pm onwards in what will be a monstrous event.

Oh yeah, just found this

I must have missed that.

Very sad. Reading his posts it seems he was resigned to his fate.
I think he wasn't making a big deal out of it

I feel bad now that I didn't say something about it to him.. It's very tempting to put these things to the back of your mind

Fortunately, I video called him on Whatsapp or telegram at that time and had a good chat for about half an hour or more. He was not afraid, but was concerned that him dying so young but also so close to his brother dying would be tough on the family. He was a bit shuck physically compared to the picture. He was an rady lad to have a chat with.

That’s sad news. Poor chap.

I wonder if there was a connection between his death and his brothers.

I know a family that all got the same cancer and the link was a radon issue in the family home they grew up in.

To clarify (because not everybody can keep track of the multiple avatars on various sites):
Marcus McQuaid, from Scotstown in Co. Monaghan, who posted here as Coal Gas and Peat, and on politicalirish.com a number of years earlier as Saul Goodman, has unfortunately died of cancer. He mentioned his illness here earlier this year: https://www.sarsfieldsvirtualpub.com/threads/the-cancer-and-parasite-thread.676/page-5#post-104312 .

A modest, kind and intelligent man going by his posts, Lord have mercy on him, he will be sorely missed.

Yes, he put up a hell of a fight and was never complaining. Possibly his last act was donating to Val which inspired “myles” to do likewise. He saw trump elected and his last posts were on his passion, which was martial contests.

RIP Saul 🙏

All too easy to forget there are real folk behind our silly online avatars.
I remember watching the Super Bowl with him, the one before last I think. Now there would no chance of me normally speaking watching the Super Bowl, but I knew that he liked American football (and was knowledgeable about it, unlike me) and I thought, feck it, I'll stay up and watch it with him, the two of us posting back and forth here during it. I enjoyed it, it was like watching the game with a mate even if we weren't in the same room.

Anyone remember Des Quirrell, he was a P.ie and Political Irish poster.

He also passed away a few years ago from Cancer.
Also the poster Madam who posted on Political Irish, was told she passed too.

RIP to all those who have passed.

He was one of those steadfast members that made this site such good company. A man who knew his own mind and was true to what he believed in whilst retaining a generosity of spirit that was certainly the envy of me, if not many others here. We need a good deal more of his sort, not one less.

May he rest in peace.

That is terrible news. I know the area where he lived and knew of his brother's death. The family were normal with no infamy. I always imagined he was stocky build but I see he was thin. It is a republican area and where Seamus McElwaine hailed from.

It is indeed terrible news.
RIP

When he announced his cancer he was really saying goodbye to us all at the same time,
and i detected the prognosis was hopeless in his message .
it seemed a little sentimental at the time but i told him most people on this site are good people behind the daft commentary and we would help him in any way we can --he has only to ask .
over time wiser people than i have taught me never be afraid to make a fool of yourself and ALWAYS offer help even if it seems naive to do so .
i am glad he had this site to bare his soul and test the waters now and again --i live in rural Ireland and there is not an address where i can converse like Sarsfields and be given access to videos and ideas i would never otherwise see .
i know this site was a comfort to him and when he announced his republicanism and his republican address to us he was writing his epitaph in a sort of a way as it will not fit on his tombstone what he treasured in life .
we are glad we knew him and his passions expressed here freely in this republic known as Sarsfields .
RIP Marcus .

With the campaign going on I did not know he was ill. If I had known, I would have posted encouragement. I have a poster up in Scotstown village.

Everything comes at a cost. One cam only do their best.

When he announced his cancer he sent me a PM wanting to talk. I was on a daft two week Boycott of the Site at the time after a fall out with Aul Lad so I didn't respond. Also for some reason I thought he was just spooked over a small cancer like a stage one thing that would just need some skin removed or something.

I regret not answering his PM. But I'm glad Dan reached out and contacted him via FaceTime. That makes me happy.

He was my favourite poster.

Shit, I wouldn't want to live with that. Not having a go at you, you've given your (regettable) reasons.

I would have to agree with @AUL LAD, without being fully explicit about it, he did more or less tell us that he had it and that the prognosis wasn't, well, good.

He posted for some time afterwards (quite normally) and I can only hope that he went downhill fast, and all I mean by that obviously is that he didn't suffer too much.

He posted normally up til Saturday night. I suspect the cancer did not wear him down as normal but he might have gotten organ failure or sepsis or something as he went very quick.
when I talked to him he had no fear what so ever and his only chance ncern was actually the timing, so soon after his brother.
it was not a short hello, it was a good chat. He was about 5 years older imo that that photo, i am guessing early forties. I had plenty of time to size him up. He was the type that is relatively common in Ireland, not big but afraid of nobody and would NEVER back down. His mindset results in lads like him winning rows against bigger men .
He certainly appreciated the call.
I have met many posters down through the years. They are never like what I imagined them to be.

It is a sad thing, it awaits us all.

ye should check out Vals video about donations. He says a few very appropriate words about him. Well done @valamhic

Yes I hope so. I haven't had any direct experience, but I remember my late father telling me about his brother in law who died of cancer in his early thirties. He was an All Ireland cross country runner, the fittest of men. Didn't drink or smoke. His family would be well known in Dublin, the Brennans from Ringsend. Ger Brennan, the former Dublin footballer and current Louth manager would be his nephew.

Anyway, my father told us about visiting him in St Luke's hospital and being taken aback by how frail and wan he appeared. Unfortunately he was many months there before he passed.

I really hope it was quick and relatively painless for Marcus. And @Declan is right, funny how when we see photos of the people behind these avatars, they never really correspond to how we think the person would look. For some reason I imagined Coal as a heavy set, rugged country lad, the kind you might find in a small pub in the sticks of Monaghan.
Tommy Brennan I think was the PE teacher in my old school, died early 80s. Sounds like the same person. RIP
